Mercedes Reveals Lovely New SLK
Tuesday January 13, 2004
Mercedes-Benz's chunky little SLK has spawned a second generation which is a little larger and a whole lot prettier. With a front end reminiscent of the top-of-the-line SL class -- itself designed to remind you of the MacLaren-Mercedes F1 racing car -- and with softer, sweeter lines than its predecessor, the new SLK has taken a huge leap forward in appearance. In performance, too; the new V-6 engine ranges from163 hp in the SLK 200, to 262 hp in the SLK 350, 360 hp in the Mercedes-AMG 8-cylinder version. A 6-speed manual or optional 7-speed automatic awaits the lucky driver. Though loaded with new technology, the trick I like best is called "neck level heating" and allows for top-down driving year-round. But we show the SLK with the top up because it then becomes a gorgeous coupe. In 20 seconds.
