Dreaming of the Open Road
Saturday February 7, 2004
What I like about the automobile is the way it suggests potential journeys. Being somewhat of a gypsy, I've always enjoyed setting out with no particular destination in mind and the thought that maybe I'll just keep on moving, because home is the road. Travel writer Bruce Chatwin, theorising that nomadism is what distinguishes us from other beings, wrote that "all our activities are linked to the idea of journeys." I'm intrigued for example, by those narrow lanes leading up to solitary farmhouses, wondering what mystery awaits the stranger who dares knock on the door. Romance, perhaps? Or just a snarling dog. A 2005 PT Cruiser Convertible would be perfect for the trip.
