Kimo sabe? No, Lone Ranger... it's the Mazda Kusabi
Monday February 16, 2004
The Canadian International Auto Show was treated to only one North American debut this year, the Mazda Kusabi. Aside from its assertive styling, the Kusabi is an interesting concept, applying the four-seat format of its RX-8 to the sub-compact Mazda2 platform, making it well-suited to city life as well as the winding roads where a sports car normally hangs out. A supercharged 1.3 liter four-cylinder engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission provides lively performance while the small size and Mazda2 suspension assure agile handling. The hatch has twin doors opening from a center spine, making it easier to load small items, yet the entire hatch can lift to facilitate larger objects. Front seatbacks swing sideways from a hinge between the seats so passengers can access the rear seats. Will they build the Kusabi? Maybe, but it won't look quite like this.
