Test Drive: 2004 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Wagon
Tuesday May 18, 2004
Returning the Jetta TDI Wagon to Volkswagen's western zone office, I spotted fellow journalist Greg Wilson bringing back a Jetta TDI sedan. Greg was delighted when, after a week of testing, he could only squeeze $15 of diesel fuel into the tank. I countered with $21, which was all I spent after two weeks: for anyone concerned over fuel costs the new breed of diesels can save a bundle. Horsepower ratings are not high but the torque is impressive and that's what counts when acceleration is demanded. The TDI Wagon's compact dimensions combine with a spacious cargo area to create, with the diesel and a 5-speed automatic, an ideal city and country car for a small family. Or an acquisitive decorator.
