Test drive: 2006 Ford Explorer
Sunday January 22, 2006
Strictly speaking, the Ford Explorer is a light truck, not a car. But having replaced big wagons like the Ford Country Squire as the truckster of choice for so many families, I think it deserves honorary car status. Though its rep was tarnished (somewhat unfairly, if you ask me) by the whole Firestone tire blowout issue, the Explorer continued to be an innovator in the mid-size SUV field. It was one of the first SUVs in its size class to adapt an independent rear suspension, a boon to handling and stability. Today's Explorer offers up an electronic stability control system and a plethora of airbags. It's also expensive. Really expensive. Is it worth it? Ride along with About Cars test driver Jason Fogelson and see what you think. -- Aaron Gold
