Test drive(s): 2006 Pontiac G6 GTP Coupe
We've been reviewing a lot of sporty import cars in recent weeks -- so where goeth the domestics? Philip Powell, a self-proclaimed Pontiac fan, recently test drove the 6-speed version of Pontiac's hot coupe, the G6 GTP. While he wasn't totally blown away, his opinion was much higher than Jason Fogelson's; his less-than-flattering G6 GTP review prompted this well-written counterpoint from one of our readers.
Me, I fall somewhere in the middle: I love the G6 GTP coupe's styling. General Motors has some fantastic designers, and when allowed to run free they can turn out some breathtaking designs. But I was lukewarm to the car's dynamics. GM has been building some fantastic performance cars of late -- the Cadillac CTS and STS come immediately to mind -- and the G6 just isn't in the same class. Granted, Caddys are supposed to be nicer cars than Pontiac, but with GM moving towards common platforms for different cars, there's no reason the G6 GTP couldn't sparkle in the same way. -- Aaron Gold
