Test drive: Toyota Camry Hybrid
Thursday March 9, 2006
I think it's safe to say that the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid is one of the most-anticipated cars of the year. The Toyota Camry is America's best-selling car, and by including a hybrid drivetrain in the newly redesigned 2007 Toyota Camry's model lineup, Toyota has just made hybrids a lot more appealing and accessible to the masses. (And who knows, maybe it'll drive down values on used Toyota Priuses, which would be great for those who desire a hybrid but can't afford one.) The Camry Hybrid presents a more ordinary driving experience than other hybrids. There's a mileage penalty -- the Camry Hybrid gets around 50% better mileage than most mid-sizers, while the Prius gets roughly double -- but it's still a huge savings over other cars in this class. Prices have not yet been announced, and you can expect the Camry Hybrid to sell well over sticker price for a while, so the financial savings of the car are still questionable. But the reduction in reliance on foreign oil and the improvements to air quality are the savings we really need. -- Aaron Gold
