Test drive: 2006 Pontiac Solstice
Tuesday March 21, 2006
Walking to school with my daughter this morning we remarked that while it's the second day of spring, it's only 24 degrees. Brrr! The only sure way I know to usher in the warmer weather is to talk about convertibles. But not the Volvo C70 or the Audi A4. I'm talking roadster. And while the Miata is just a superb motorcar, spring means it's Solstice time. Colin Hefferon somehow managed to get his mitts on one and had almost nothing but praise. In fact, his only complaint about was the lack of space for bringing along trinkets. But we all know that no one really brings anything with them in these kinds of cars, just a friend, so it's not too much of an issue (to me, anyway). Do you think the Solstice has what it takes to run with the Miata?—Brooklyn Bob

More junk by GM & the UAW from Brokeback Mt.
I think the Solstice can give the Miata a run. It may be on the “porky” side considering it’s 2800+ weight, but there is the 260HP Turbo Charged GXP version which might even put the Lotus in it’s place.
They don’t have what it takes to compete with quality. Yeah, this is as much a quality increase as the Cobalt is above the Cavalier. good luck if you buy GM!
Nice car, looking forward to the 260HP version. Like the styling beter on the Saturn Sky. Same drive train.
Actually, I test drove the Cobalt sedan last year and was quite pleasantly surprised. The SS Supercharged coupe isn’t bad either, though I think a turbo would have been more fun… looking forward to the juiced-up Solstice.
Why such a small trunk? I know that it is a 2 seater but, The Miata has a at least a slightly larger more practical trunk.
I leased my Solstice (red) on December 27, 2006. There have been many warm and sunny days in Denver since then, leading to lots of top-down driving. Living single, I’m not too inconvenienced by the car’s minimal storage capacity. Almost every day, almost everywhere I go, I receive favorable comments on the car’s looks. For my part, I’m pleased that The General brought the car to market at an appealing base price, that the mileage (city) also suits my wallet, and that my experience at the Pontiac dealer was vastly superior to what I experienced at three VW dealerships (when buying and servicing my previous vehicle, a 2001 New Beetle Sport).
Good to hear from a Solstice owner – thanks!
