Best Cars For Teens

Friday August 11, 2006
2006 Honda CivicAaron's picked out his top best cars for teens and they are a reasonably diverse lot. Out of them I would pick the Civic or Mazda3. In fact, I (for editorial purposes only) spent some (a lot) of time (during work hours) configuring a Civic and, heck, it only came out to $16,482 with shipping. That's a car I could have afforded even when I was delivering newspaper after school. Yes, I know that's because I didn't have to pay for school, rent, food or clothes.

I'd suggest stepping up the Mazda3, but I have trouble controlling myself and when I configured it, it came out to be a $23k car. You get a lot for the money, but it's still $23k. What would you pick?—Brooklyn Bob

Neither. Those cars suck. I’d buy a used car for $8,000 and use the other $8k to buy beer underage.

Kids are spoiled give them a toolbox and a 63 volkswagon and say here ya go

(3) Michael says:

The first two comments are obviously not from parents of teenagers. My first car was built in the 1960’s and seat belts were only available for the front seat. Bicycle helmets had not been invented then either. However, this is a whole new era where bicycle helmets and safety features for cars are available. If spending a few hundred extra dollars will reduce the chance of serious injury, I will spend that money. There are a lot more cars and crazy drivers out there compared to when I was a teenager. Reliable, safe, and fun cars to drive are good for everyone, including teenagers. American car makers need to wake up and make these standard features.

im 16 years old and one of my friends had died in one of those tiny cars honda sells because it got hit by a big car and fliped and he died. My mom bought me a 2007 yukon xl and i love it so buy the big cars even though more expensive$$$

(5) Gaston says:

Rob sad he would rather buy a used car for eight grand but for 4 grand more you can buy a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt I did!

(6) deni says:

I want my daughter to be safe, have a fuel efficiency car or truck ( probably something big and old). Unfortunately what ever kind of car I get her will have to be used due to afford- ability. The kid in the Yukon ‘lucky you”, but everyone cannot afford to spend the extra money on a vehicle. Kids as well as adults just have to stop taking life for granted and drive as if their lives depend on it. and believe me it does!

(7) alex says:

my mom though it was a great ivestment to buy me my dream car when i turned sixteen because of how safe it was. She got me a 2007 escalade AWD. i no lots of people who have died in little civis and coupes, they might be cheap and reliable but not reliable enough to save you kids life.

(8) adam says:

Alright. I am about to turn 16 and i don’t really want a big yukon because parking it will be horrible. I gaurentee that girl up top gets in an accident every month. If prefer like a mid size sedan with some power to it. i have to keep my grades up and keep my job to get the car i want. the car i want is an acura TL, used of course with 50,000 miles on it. its fats and its a magnet.

March 1, 2007 at 10:09 am
(9) Frank says:

Larger cars do not mean safer cars. They offer larger blind spots, for a novice driver it brings up a number of issues with parking and manuvering. Mid size older cars for irresponsible types and small moble cars for responsible types. The myth of safre is just that My next door neighbor owns a body shop and the number of SUV accidents is just a bad and roll-overs are a problem with idiots who think they are driving a tank!

(10) Omar says:

It’s yo boy Omar and i’m bout to get a wip. Boy with the Escalade, lucky ass. But u still got to think bout the parking problems and how much gas u need. I peobably get one a them BMW mid sized sedans. It’s safe, stilish, says u got money and the honeys be all over u.

March 12, 2007 at 1:17 pm
(11) sam says:

alright why would you want those nice cars. i mean teenagers are supposed to have fun but if you have some expensive car. then there is no fun. you and your friends get in and you have to be careful and not touch anything. why not get like a used small suv and so if your friend spills or something or it gets trashed its ok cuz its just a little car you dont need to worry about for the rest of your life. i would way rather have like a tacoma or explorer or something just cheap like that you can have way more fun! and then you can save up to get the car of your dreams when you are ready to grow up ya know its pointless, my dream car is an escalade but i would never want it now, i want it when im an adult so it will last longer and its not going to get trashed by your friends but thats just me and most teens will get in some type of accident, even if its a fender bender or something small, its gonna be the worst day of your life when you ding up your escalade dog!! haha

(12) Logan says:

im 16 i got a 03 chevy s10 its not bad on gas its big enough but not huge its easy to handle rides good looks good thats wat u should get dont have to be a s10 but a small truck or suv its big enough to have some friends and big enough to haul some stuff around it aint that expensive not to fancy thast all i need

March 24, 2007 at 3:45 pm
(13) Kevin says:

whats with you spoiled kids getting yukons and acuras for your 16th birthdays? are you all from beverly hills? i dont understand why parents would buy their teenager a brand new car for their first car….i have a 2000 explorer…it has airbags and all that…just as safe as a new car…these kids with new rides will have nothing to look forward to when they get out of school and have a chance to buy their first car.

(22) Shelbi says:

I’m 17 and i’m hoping to get a car by the end of this summer..i have a lot of things to do..school..clubs..marching band..church..bla bla bla..it would be a lot easier, cooler, more fun and freedom and my parents would stop complaining.. but i need something REALLY cheap and used (i’m talking 4,000 and under) i don’t even think i can save that much because i’m jus looking for a summer job..they never pay 17 year olds that much and the government takes all the money out my paycheck dang a lotta u kids r spoiled..i’ll b happy as long as i get a car (as long as it’s decent) don’t gotta b shiny and brand new..not to mention the insurance is sky high (which is like impossible 4 me to pay) does anybody have any extra suggestions on how i can actually save enough money (besides most of the money i’m going to get 4rm my job)to buy a small, cheap, decent, used car?..i don’t get allowance or anything but i make good grades haha

im 16 and i got a volkswagon. i think those are better. And they are cuter than those dinky cars.

April 9, 2007 at 10:14 pm
(24) Caroline says:

What I’m trying to figure out is how the heck I figure out what kinda car to get. But honestly, I don’t get it, paying 16,000 bucks for a car as a teen? who can afford that? my parents said they might chip in as a birthday present, but even with that and a summer job, and my savings, I’m still trying to figure out what kind of safe lil car which is relatively reliable (I can’t afford to take it into the shop every month) with decent milage I can get for 3-4 grand. I mean, I don’t care what the car looks like, it can be an aesthetic mess if it works, all I need is a way to get around. ya know? but I don’t know where to start looking.

April 10, 2007 at 1:57 am
(25) Alex says:

I love my 16th birthday present! I just got a 07 BMW X5 4.8Li although it was just a little expensive (only 65k) it will probably save my life when it comes to me getting in a crash. It has all the great safety features (EST, 23 AIRBAGS!, sensors etc.) when it comes to purchasing your son’s/daughter’s first car you have to go all out and get the one with the best safety features even if its expensive cuz you cant put a price on their life!

April 10, 2007 at 3:26 pm
(26) Travis says:

im 17 and i have an audi a4 3.2L V6 Fast as Heck!!!! but the reason my parents got it for me was because of its safety. Audi has an outstanding rep for safety. Look for the safest cars…not always the fastest, but in my case me and my parents got what we wanted. Oh and we leased under my dads name. I just use it as “MY” car even though its under my name so insurance is lower.

April 14, 2007 at 11:11 pm
(27) nader says:

hi i am 15 and turning 16 in 2 months and i plan on getting a car. After reading the reviews i am surprised that kids my age are getting brand new cars. I don’t want them to get a piece a junk just something that is 5 to 8 yeas old. I wonder do they even pay at least half for their cars. I had to save for 2 years to save up $2850 and my dad will match that. I plan on getting a 99 to 01 Honda Civic or an acura integra. they make good first cars and they are safe as long you are a safe driver. it does not make sense to buy yukons or tahoe “because bigger is safer” they are gas guzzlers and it wont be a smart by because of the gas prices in nashville wear i live and across the country.

April 18, 2007 at 8:39 pm
(28) James Smith says:

Ok… Well… I am 16, just starting driving. The biggest concern for everyone is safety. We started looking around and the first thing that came to mind was a VOLVO. They are safe and last forever. Then we started looking around and decided that maybe a VOLVO wasnt a good idea because to get AWD you need to pay a lot more. We moved to VW. Anyhow, I ended up with a VW TOUREG. It is safe, small (no 3rd row seat), and it has 4WD. Plus it is really comfortable. The navigation really helps when you get lost!

May 3, 2007 at 7:54 pm
(29) Katelyn says:

Eww…. I’d never buy any of these cars! Daddy’s buying me a beemer!

(31) Miley says:

wow! i really like those big cars that are really long and “grandpa-ish” they are really stylish and fun to drive. i think they are safer and more reliable too! Everyone should just get really long cars!

May 9, 2007 at 11:11 pm
(32) katy says:

i’m getting a 2008 audi TT for graduation. my dad has always loved audi’s and knows they are safe cars. my mom already got in an accident with my brother’s A4 and walked out fine. you should get a car that you KNOW is 100% safe and that if your kid will walk away from an accident in it, you’re good. you don’t have to get a super expensive one, depending on how much money you have, but at least get a safe one.

May 13, 2007 at 6:30 pm
(33) vivian says:

i turned 16 a couple months ago and i think im gonna get either an audi or some brand of toyota. bit thing is safety! can’t go wrong with any toyota products

May 16, 2007 at 6:39 pm
(34) Quishi says:

You know, those cars aren’t good. If you are a teen, the best would be a BMW M3, 2003 through 2005 only. YOu could offord it in 2009 anyways, why get a civic? But don’t race on this car. Sport cars can also be used for comfort, not just racing. Youtube, search for BMW M3, then scroll to BMW M3 SUPERCHARGED ESS. Good acceleration: 0-60, 4.9997secs. Check it out! I am 16, and I have a 2005 M3, we aren’t rich. My family’s house is only 300,002 thousand dollars. My dad has an ‘01 Maxima. He BOUGHT ME THE M3.

May 28, 2007 at 9:19 pm
(38) Catherine says:

wow, i cant believe yall get cars like that, that is the stupidest thing i have ever heard! Your insurance must be crazy. i am 15 about to be 16 my parents are not buying me a car because they know its dangerous. I get to drive what ever car they have. teenagers dont need brand new cars because they are gonna tear it up and not care because they didn’t pay for it anyway. No offence but yalls parents are idiots.

May 29, 2007 at 9:59 pm
(39) Casey says:

If ur worried about ur childs safty, were a basterding seatbelt!

They bought me a 2007 Range Rover HSE for safety and highyway driving cuz it is a big gas hog(but who cares you arent paying) and then for driving around Bev Hills, or Bel Air (e.g. the beach, shopping, or going to the airport) they got me a 2007 BMW 5 Series(I dont know the exact model). well i i think that is is funny how so many people are irritated by the fact a few parents want to spoil their teen by getting them an expensive car! obviously they are jealous because they know that they can not afford it! I am turning 16 in september and my parents and i have already taken the new 2007 range rovers HSE for a test drive and they loved it! so in on september 13, (the day i get my license) my parents are taking to the dealership to pick up my new car. i am getting it in white with tan seats! my parents at first were reluctant to buy the Range rover but they soon realized (after months of persuasion) that i deserved it! after all my older sister got a porsche 911 and my young sister (Wesley) is getting a mercedes G500. yes, gas is high but my dad owns oil rigs in canada so i think i am good. oh and samy congrats on the new range rover i know that the black is a hot color my friend has one!!!!

(47) Linda says:

I read all these comments by kids who are obviously lying about a lot of it and trying to be something they are not. It is a pity and I hate to see the direction they are going to lead our country and lives. If any of the comments ARE true, these parents are not doing any of us favors by teaching these kids irresponsibility and greed. Maybe some of these parents could buy them a space shuttle and get them the heck out of our lives. I would feel much safer knowing that they were not on the roads with their lying and big egos.

The sad thing is that I know two of the kids on this blog and they aren’t lying about having 2 cars and range rovers. They’re spoiled little rich kids that live in the Hollywood Hills, and Palos Verdes. They’ll never appreciate things in life, what a shame:(

So I’m surprised noones getting a ferrari… Heres the thing any educated person should know that a 16 year old cannot properly control these 30k+ cars. So yes perhaps your lucky enough that your parents are buying you these new cars… however when your involved in an accident them within the year and realize that these safety systems will not save your life in speeds over 45mph you may realize that obtaining these cars was not a smart idea… that is if you live.
anyways my 2 cents… I just stumbed upon this rediculous page. Maybe im more rediculous for skimming it and posting.

Alex-

If you havent noticed..this is a blog..so our grammar might not be PERFECT! obviously you are a very old man stuck in the 50’s because then you would undertsand the meaning of this blog and any or type of “quick” communication! Oh, and back to cars, my daddy just got me a 07 Chevy tahoe LTZ. I frickin love my car! and, unlike others, I actually appreciate this present and I was rewarded it for having a 4.3 GPA, winning a national Decathalon, becoming 1st string QB at skoo, and for winning the BECOME and American Legion Award! So, no i;m not “necessarily” A spoiled brat (yet)

Hi!Well im 16. My parents have gotten me 2 cars. When i was about 15 and a half they got me a cheep little 2008 BMW 328xi they go for about 35k so they got me that i didnt like it at all its small. but its a good car. So when i turned 16 which was like a month ago they got me a 2007 infiniti QX they go for like 51000. Let me tell you now. for gas they are horrible. but my dad gave me a card for that. but this suv is amazing! its so big and fast and strong. they are really dependable. and also extremly nice. I would most def say for parents that are looking for a car for the kid. get a infiniti QX they are big and safe. i drive it everyday to school and to friends and what not. i would recomend it!!

My dad is going to buy a new car when I am 16 and he said he is going to give me his Ford Focus. The Ford Focus is really a great little car! My mom has a huge Ford E-150 and I can’t park that thing but I can park my dad’s focus perfect because it’s so small. This car has over 150,000
mile’s on it and still looks and runs
100%!!!

All parents go nuts about safe cars for teens…

I’m a teen ( 17 ) got a brand new G35 Coupe Ivory on Wheat last year.. & I LOVE IT…

You can buy the safest car in the world for your kid, but it doesn’t make them a safe driver.

A lot of my friends got cars they didn’t want, but their parents claim they are safe…

If actual parents parents are reading this then I would suggest buying a car with SIDE AIRBAGS.

My friend Brian, me, and our g/f’s were driving home from KOPM and a Ford F-150 hit us in his Audi A4… The police told us that if he didnt have side airbags we could have and would have most likely sustained serious brain damage and serious pelvis injuries.

As for me … I have side airbags

Smaller cars put the person at risk if they are accident prouned or have a bad driving record smaller cars do kill thats why i reccomend a 2005 Chevy Impala or the 2007 Ford Taurus or even the Ford Escape Or Jeep Liberty are Nice Suvs All the cars I’ve listed are Under $27.000 and are good for the accident prouned I dont believe that anybody under 19 and living with their parents should have a luxury vehicle such as a 2008 Cadillac Escalade Nor A 2007 GMC Yukon Denali Suv Just something thats nice used or old and has a good crash test rating at least 3 stars ***

First of all this blog is supposed to help us teens and or parents on selecting a good car, not for you spoiled kids to be coming on here to brag. I am not at all jealous of yall because I have the opportunity to get a new car, but i choose not to until I feel like I truly deserve it. So for now i will most likely get a used Mitsubishi Lancer, a scion, or a civic. They are good looking, cheap, and good on gas. And for you teens who cant afford it just try talking to your parents, uncles, grandparents, etc, if they feel like you deserve it they will be willing to help as much as they can. 0h and for the kids who are getting new cars and deserve it, congratulations. You will feel better in the long run if you feel like you worked hard for what you got. And if you got a new ridiculously expensive car, just because, well good for you, not everyone is that lucky… Maybe instead of bragging on what you have on here, you can post something that is actually helpful, or nothing at all.

I agree with some the comments on here. It is a little unnecessary to purchase a brand spanking- new car for ur teen.I’m currently 15,turning 16 next spring. Me and my parents have been talking about cars and plan on getting my car by november. This is when my dad will purchase a new Mercedes GL for himself and give me his ‘05 BMW X5. I’m extremely greatful for this car too! I don’t even think i deserve such a car even though I do extremely well in school and other extracurriculars. I don’t feel any teens deserves a luxury vechile because they will not feel a sense of self worth and pride after working hard to purchase(or pay for part of ) that car. But anywhooo.
before my dad decided to give me his car i was looking at a ‘07 Jetta and was offered a budget that I could work to increase. but yeah ahah

Im 15 and getting ready to drive. About everyone says get a big or med. size car or truck, the down side to that is gas prices. the bigger car you got the more gas you pay but you will be safer…and the cost will be more. To me I have to buy my own car and pay for insurence, for teens like me we will have to buy a small older less safer car but we wont have to full up the tank as much. To me it all depends on the parent and what they want there teens to drive. IT ETHIER BE RESPONSABLE AND GET EVERYTHING YOUR SELF AND BE CARFULL or ILL BUY YOU A NEW CAR AND PAY INSURENCE (or something like that)…Parents whats better safty of your teen or working for safty…like i said i have to work thats means walking to a job :( no fun for me when i end up in an older car. All teens thats parents buy there teens car are lucky there family can affourd. (no offence)

It your chose parents…that could safe a life or two.

Why don’t all you spoiled little rich brats get a sensible car like a Nissan Frontier. Good gas mileage, safe, stylish. And, it’s affordable at $27,000. I made a $11,500 down payment from my savings and my Mom agreed to finance the rest of it in her name. I would never buy a stupid BMW or Audi to save my life. Just because you have money doesn’t mean you get to rub it into the faces of us in the middle-class. Get a job and quit whining that your daddy didn’t buy you the right color. I’m lucky to even get a car, most peeps at my school drive old pieces of junk or don’t have a car at all.

I have about 5k saved up, and (my parents are divorced) mom will probably give me 2k, and dad about 5k, so im considering a 97 rx 7 or a 95 supra, both under ten k, with 18 inch chrome, and black on black

Wow! You kids crack me up. I am 14 and cannot wait to drive when I turn 16. I am probably going to get a Chevrolet Cobalt or something nice, cheap and reliable. I don’t want my parents to buy me some expensive car when I am just 16, and learning how to drive. That is senseless and is a true waste of money. Obviously, they do not know modern kids. Anyway, best of luck to all of you all in your driving and I hope that everyone gets a decent car that they can easily be settled with, when relating to personal needs.

Yep…just a few years ago I went through all of this. First I wanted something safe, therefore it had to be big. Second, I wanted something fuel efficient so he could be in the diamond lane allthe time. Third,I wanted something that wasn’t too flashy, so he wouldn’t get spoiled or get to cocky. Fourth, I wanted something that wouldn’t get him any speeding tickets. Finally, I wanted a monthly payment that I could afford…SO…until he could afford what HE wanted I bought him a monthly bus pass!!! Whenever he whined I always said the same thing…”Hey kid welcome to America…you work…you earn… you get!”

(82) hawaiian donh says:

Hey Adri! I commend your hard work at school…but that doesn’t “earn” or entitle you to a car. Believe me the feeling of buying your own car with your own $ is very gratifying and nobody takes the keys away from you or uses the car as leverage to do THEIR bidding. I was 17 when I bought my first car. I studied hard for my own future, but I also worked on construction over the summer and on weekends year ’round for my car in the present. There have been few thrills in my whole life that match the excitement of when I drove away from the dealership with that first car that I bought with MY money. This really was MY car. It’s easy to get a car from the Folks, but it’s nowhere near the same…and you’ll quickly find out that there are always strings attached. Stay in school, don’t let the car jar your focus. You are growing up in a declining America. Your education, not your car shall be your only salvation.

(83) A Parent in Ohio says:

Sorry, I don’t believe any parent should buy their children a car, new or used, or for any reason, unless there is a plan in place that the child(ren) are going to pay you back.
We bought our son his first car, but, he had a payment plan in which he had to “pay us back”. He since has gone through “how to get a loan” for a better car he really wanted, we co-signed- BUT- he was told “if we have to make the payment-the keys are ours”! Our children need to learn these things no matter the money situtation-one day we will not be here, how will they know……..?
It’s only hurting them in the long run of lifes many journeys that they will come upon.

(84) A Parent in Ohio says:

For anyone looking to buy a car do some “research”, one can call their insurance agent or check online with the insurance institute, they can give you the best rated cars for safety (new or used)and this will help save $ on the expensive teen rates, then you can research those vehicles to see what kind of gas milage they do get. OTHER: check with your insurance co., some offer good student discounts(this applies to college students too) and other programs to save on insurance. Ours does here where we live in OH (StateFarm). P.S. Always ask for a CARFAX at any car lot on used cars before you buy, it will give you the history of the car (accidents, flooded, etc.), they have to provide it-Free. You can check pricing online too, get as much information as you can for the car (milage, shape, options etc.) go online to kbb.com and enter it there, it will give you prices and something to work with when negotiating price. NEVER pay full price at any car lot!

I drive a 2001 Ford Explorer sport trac and I have to work and full time job just to pay for the gas, so now its for sale and I am buying a taurus. I know its a grandma car but think about this, it is the cheapest car to insure on the road today and you can pick one up for about 4 grand.

September 15, 2007 at 4:01 pm
(87) Christopher says:

Look, a lot of you live in an ideal setting, where your family has loads of cash to blow on a $35K+ car. My parents both have cars that cost under $28,000 with options. Basically, you shouldn’t mislead us with your own success stories. As for the others, A Parent in Ohio has the right idea. Research shows that small cars are more nimble and, at the hands of an alert driver, are therefore safer, allowing you to avoid an accident. Large SUVs/trucks, and some midsized ones are very prone to rollovers, which is not very safe. In other words, BIGGER IS NOT SAFER! When looking at safety, look at crash test ratings, and look at Consumer Reports articles, which place an emphasis on safety. Toyota, Subaru, and Honda and their subsidaries are known for reliability, and they are very safe, with standard side airbags and stability control. Nissans also are considered very safe, with one Infiniti M35 (Infiniti is owned by Nissan) that was loaned to Popular Mechanics getting hit from the side by a van, then the hood was ripped and the windshield was smashed by an armored truck. the driver walked away with some minor cuts. If you don’t believe me, go to their website and look it up! Lastly, a powerful car isn’t always better, because a distracted teen driver may tap the throttle and accelerate very quickly into the car ahead. Please consider this when you are getting your first car, or if you are a parent.

I can’t understand all these parents who buy an expensive new car for their kids.

I had to earn my first car and ended up having a 1993 Geo Metro. It was nothing fancy, but I earned it and I respected it. It got me to school, work, and on a few trips, and served its purpose. I don’t think I would’ve taken care of a car if it were just bought for me by Mummy and Daddy.

Plus it taught me to be a better driver, because it was so small. All these kids who have new SUVs seem to think that they can hit anything and be OK.

Even to this day, after graduating college, I still drive a 1995 Ford Escort and am pleased with it. As to why teens need a Yukon or Hummer is beyond me

I find this amazing! I can’t stand fake people! In all honesty, do these people have nothing else to do- Also, I would like to add, California is not the only place in the world that is wealthy, I am from Lexington, MA, and we have Beverly Farms, which Beverly Hills was based on. Obviously you people from the west coast, have nor class, or dignity. I would also like to add, I’m 1and have a Lexus LX 470, but I am not just saying that.. I ACTUALLY HAVE ONE. (instead of dreaming I do, like 3/4ths of the kids who post blogs) I would also like to inform you its raining, and I am bored, because normally I don’t waste my time with these obviously classless people.
For the parents:
My first car was an 05 Saab 93, which is a really reasonably priced car (insurance wise) The reason I have an LX470 is because I kept a 3.89/4.00 GPA for all of Junior year, I’m not a “spolied” Lexington bratt.

Oh, so ppl are getting Acuras and Cadillacs and Maseratis for their 16th birthdays? Not me. I’m 14 and I’m saving for my dream car: a Scion xB. Sure it looks boxy but there aren’t that many blind zones and it’s safe and reliable as well as cool-looking. And it’s about $15K. Good for a first car. So why teens are getting Beemers, Mercs, and Cadillacs for their 16th birthday is beyond me. I think the people who say that Civics, Fits, and xBs are bad when crashed are just lying. SUVs are just a bad choice for first drivers. They think that they’re hauling a big machine. But they’re not. And besides, who would want a Hummer? Some rich dude who doesn’t give a darn ’bout gas mileage, safety, or blind zones?

January 10, 2008 at 12:03 am
(108) Venus says:

My family’s business is selling auto insurance. Every year we lose a few clients (especially the YOUNGER ONES!!!) to auto accidents. Wiser for you youngsters not to rush to fast to drive, and when you do, it’s better if you start with a safer model car (no trucks/SUVs)and not necessarily a new car. Some of you don’t take driving safely as seriously as you should. If you get an older, but safe car (like a 4-door sedan) and maybe even help your parents pay for it — can you imagine that!!! When you have a financial stake in something, you know what, you handle it with more care and responsibility — which means YOU’LL end up driving more safely and not showing off so much on the road to your friends. It’s so sad when we get those phone calls or relatives stopping in to cancel an insurance policy on one of our younger clients who died on the road. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE…life is short, especially when you treat a motor vehicle like it is a toy. Only those who are mature to drive a car responsibly should get behind the wheel — otherwise, you are endangering your own life and those of others on the road. Stick with a Honda, Toyota or Volkswagen sedan (4-door)– the auto insurance is cheaper (especially on older cars and liability only, no car loans or else you will pay through the roof on auto insurance!). Plus, please help your parents to pay for the car — that teaches you responsibility and shows that you respect your parents. Nowadays, young people have too many things just handed to them, and a number of them, instead of appreciating that, end up taking these acts of kindness for granted. Please do your part to be responsible on the road and a good citizen and son/daughter to your parents. Best of luck & congrats to those fortunate enough to be getting their 1st vehicle (either on their own or with their parents help)!!!

I am 20 and my first car was a 98 Acura Integra that my older siter gave me (mind you, I still had to pay the car off). It was very reliable, got great gas mileage and very stylish. As soon as I could afford it, I got myself into a brand new 07′ civic. Let me tell you, that was a big mistake. My insurance went up by $150 and my car payment was $100 more a month. I am paying a little over $700 a month just to drive a civic and that’s not icluding the gas and oil changes. Mind you, not everyone comes from a wealthy family. I pay this all on my own. If I could give advise to anyone getting their 1st car, go cheap but safe. People are so materialistic these days.
Yea, and to you BOYS who like the fast cars, my brother almost lost his life because he had a fast sports car that he was racing. He hit into a tractor trailor. And my brother was a very good driver. He also spent alot of money on his car. And his car was totaled. That’s why I say, dont be so materialistic, because you cant take any of that stuff with you when your gone. But they say, you only learn through experience.

list:
04 Pontiac GTO
02 BMW M3
02 Subaru WRX
95 Mazda RX-7
05 ford mustang V6
95 Nissan 240SX
05 Mitsubish lancer OZ rally
95 Toyota MR2
07 chevy cobalt SS

in conclusion. i feel that the noobs who bother to get all angry at people who want a certain car for the fun and enjoying that car and its abilities. not just for the fact that were out there to crash ‘em and bash ‘em into itty bitty pieces. your a teeneager or a parent and when you get your car you like that you want to treasure that thing and protect it from any form of damage or buffeting. as a greasemonkey i live to enjoy the pleasentrys of tuning a car and taking it out on portland intl raceway for laptimes. on that note, i reccommend you do not race on the streets unless you feel you full well know the consequences of your actions to-be. if you are smart, you will save it for the track where winnings are much better and the popularity skyrockets with each win.

I think alot of you are new money and lack class. Having an expensive car is one thing but being classy is another. My brother got a 997 as a junior in High School but he knew it was out of the ordinary for a teen to get a 100k dollar car, and he never used it as a source of bragging or put downs. You can be two types of wealthy- the benevolent, carrying, and not in your face George Clooney- or someone lacking virtue and class like Paris Hilton. I got a Benz E63amg- and no I dont race it and speed on the streets, because streets were made for driving, and the track was made for racing. Race when you have a Roll Bar, Helmet, and a closed track, and appriciate the value of money. I know that once I am off my parents tab I wont be able to afford a car like the one I have right now for a while, and Im fine with that cuz its far more rewarding to earn what you have than to just receive it. But if you do have it, dont brag like a little bitch, its disgusting and hopefully most of you are just joking and pretending because this sort of arrogance shows insecurity and a newness to wealth.

I don’t even know why I’m posting this but don’t parents know if they by there kid any kind of car they are not teaching them any responsibility or appreciation for what they have. So everytime there get into a wreck you insurance just keeps going up. So I oftem wonder are you going to buy them a house as well, give them everything there hearts desire and shun the responsibilities that as being older had to learn. Old Skewl, Great Depression. Don’t store up treasure on earth, meaning expensive cars because one day when there not depending on you anymore there not going to know what to do and maybe even hate you for it when you go to be with God. Teach them there value of a dollar and I guarantee that is the most important thing in this life.

(115) Nighowl22366 says:

Teenagers don’t need expensive cars. If you (or anyone you know & trust, even your favorite mechanic shop) can work on cars, find the teenager in your life an older car (craigslist, anyone?) that needs some work done on it (replace fuel pump, fix leaks, switch out tranny, that sort of thing), have them HELP fix it, and let them do the first-car damage to something that’ll cost you maybe 1 or 2 grand at most – and the benefits! Liability insurance is a pittance, they learn a few things mechanically, you don’t go into debt, and they have something to trade in on what they save their OWN money for when they’re a bit older!
One more thing – make sure they know how to do the basics: check tire pressure, change tires, check oil, transmission fluid, and coolant levels, change air filter and wiper blades, etc. If they’re not afraid to get a bit grimy (and, yes, it washes off, just like the mud when they were three), teach them to change their own oil, brake shoes, and spark plugs, too. They’ll learn independence and confidence.
Okay, I’m getting off my soapbox now…

Well this response is for all who say give the kids an older car. I recieved a 1989 nissan maxima for my 16th birthday I thought wow this is cool I can build it up. I believe that if you are going to give your kids a car get them a up to date quality used car or a cheap new car. I almost died in that piece of trash rather for my parents to get me a better car thats what I was stuck with. And parents stop being cheap stop giving allowance and cash and birthday money save it all for the childs car. As far as payments go make a deal with the teen like parents pay for insurance and kids pay the payment that is a fair deal because everyone knows that insurance through the parent is way cheaper. Tell them if they want a new car go get a job and make your payments. Us teens need something reliable make sure that there is trust ans responsibility. For all the wealthy kids dont mess up because some of u take those expensive cars for granted and crash them and do all kinds of things to them. I say leave it to those spoiled psycho kids on my super sweet 16. I’m living in reality and I kno I have to work for the things I want thats why I’ll wait until I finish college for a luxury car.

ok. well you guys act like buying your kids a new car is just selling your soul to the devil. if you love your child then buying them a new car shouldnt be a problem. my daddy is buying me a car in feb. and its going to be used and i dont mind at all. i mean as long as it is reliable and has air conditioning and is NOT a gas guzzler then im fine. of course i would like to have a brand new car but hey what i can get is what i can get. and if your kid is not happy with the car you bought him/her then tell em buy your own car. and besides the only reason im getting my own car is because im a good kid. you could always tell your kid depending on your behavior thats the type of car you get. you act horrible you get a horrible car you act decent you get a decent car. my family drives cars like mercedes and lexus’s. but when it come down to the kids you have to work your way up till you can afford your own car. the one YOU dreamed of. so when it comes all down to it buy them a car you think they deserve wether its a beemer or a toyota.

ITS 58K and yes i KNOW I AM A SPOILED BRAT WUT EVER but im not lying. the piont is that i am thankful to even get car let alone a brand new sixty thousand dollar suv and im not saying that its ONLY 58K! its a lotta lotta money especially for a teens first car and i just happened to be lucky to have one. im just saying if any of you little spoiled ****s are REALLY GETTING cars that cost like 50 or 60 grand even 30 grand you should be thankful you little ****s. no i did not chip in at all for my car but i am very thankful that he got it for me. 2 be honest i thought i would get a 18k civic and i was greatful about that but i ended up with my REALLY NICE TRUCK SO IF ANY OF YA’LL REALLY GOT A FANCY CAR THAN YOU SHOULD BE GREATFUL OUT THE A** ESPECUALLY SINCE YOU DIDINT PAY FOR IT!!you didnt work hard for that money GOD!!

(126) Dylan K says:

I’m 17, have no car, no license, no phone, nothing. If I want any of these I have to pay for them with my own money that I earn during the summers, because I’m not allowed to work during the school year. All the kids out there who receive a car from their parents after turning 16 lucky but SPOILED! My parents say the if you have to pay for it then you’ll appreciate it more and understand the burden of insurance, gas, and the payment. School comes first kids; them a car or anything else in life. If I were to buy a car however, it would probably be a Junker; the old, rusted, paint ridden, heap of metal that sits on tires and takes me to where I need to go. The ideal types would be fuel efficient, small, safe, and non-American made cars. (A Toyota or Honda is ideal) I say if a kid wants a car, then they pay gas and all for it. If they don’t want the responsibility or to spend the money then don’t buy them a car, they just want it because “everyone else has one”. You could always rent a car from your parents and pay for the gas and wear-and-tear that is placed on the vehicle. P.S. bigger isn’t always better: the larger cars are not good for inexperienced drivers they roll, have horrible handling (because they are so high off the ground), they are heavy, therefore having horrible gas mileage (causing for constant refill and with the price of gas being what it has been before the election, and will surely rise again there after, causes the driver to pay lots to fill-up) and last but not least, the insurance is more than if you have a smaller car. If money isn’t an issue and the family just has to give you a car then a small sedan with excellent safety features and high luxury should be enough. You should be lucky that your parents are even wasting their hard-earned money on a KID that will most likely have an accident within the first couple years anyway, will the expensive car still be “it all” when the side is crushed and the paint is chipped and the fender is missing; will you still drive it around and say, “yep, that’s my car over there”, I don’t think so! You are going to want it fixed and repainted etc. or a new car just so you can wreck another later. I say get a Junker and if you back into a tree or hit a mailbox then it will already be dented and nothing will look much different. It’s like a kid getting a toy for their birthday but they don’t want to play with it in fear of scratching or ruining that new look so they keep it on a shelf and out grow it. The only difference between the toy and the car is that the car can kill and so… “For my birthday this year mom and dad I would like a weapon that I can use at my will without and any supervision at all, OK!”

I have a mercedes benz ml320. Nothing is built like a mercedes, or any German car to say the least. Excellent safety, reliability, and built like tanks. Great cars if you have the money to maintain it.

It’s like a Mercedes design only like 30 g’s cheaper, it’s really safe, really big, and gets around 30 mpg. It’s also got AWD and a cool thing called launch control where you put the car in sport mode, put your left foot on the brake, and your right foot on the gas and let your left foot off the brake. It gets you to 60 in like 5.6 seconds.

My parents told me that having a car is a big responsibility. And i know that is true. So i just got my 1st job. I only make $125 a week. By the last week in august, i will have made 1800 dollars if i put in 100 a week. My parents said if i stay on top of my savings, they will double what i have, so i can get a nice, dependable car. Not some junker. But it still won’t be no acura, or escalade or anything. I have to pay for insurance too so i better get to working. I had to get a flight (gliding) scholarship to convince my parents to let me get a car. I got the $200 to buy my ‘88 Accord 4 door and all of the parts myself, just short of my 17th. I worked day after day, digging through junkyards, patching rust, and rebuilding the engine to bring it back to life. The 2.0L 4 Cylinder A20A4 engine can somehow keep up with my uncle’s 1974 2.7L flat-six Porsche 911, so performance isn’t an issue. It managed an Ontario Safety Certificate, so I feel perfectly fine in it (My friend’s Murano actually has had more safety related issues than my Honda, for all of you ‘SUVs are safer’ people). Following that, I have to pay for gas, insurance, etc. After going through that and just hearing some girl at school talking about how her parents are buying her a Range Rover for her 16th, it just burns me up (and for any of you actually considering a Range Rover for your son/daughter, don’t. It’s really just an expensive cliché, they’re likely to get keyed/vandalized). Besides, you’re way better prepared for life if you learn how to do these things and/or work to get what you own.

All you teens should be grateful to have parents to buy you anything because I have to work hard and pay for my car myself if I want a decent one, it will take awhile because I have been taking 20 to 21 credits a semester so I can not work! Be THANKFUL for what you have. I’m very thankful mine pay for my tuition so I will not be in debt and that’s all I need. I just borrow their cars until I save up enough to get the one I want.

Everyone thinks I’m spoiled but I’m not, just lucky and i really appreciate it.
NOT- its still not enough for me!!! I drive my mums bently around pretending that its mine, driving to petrol stations and putting in like £5 just so everyone can see me in it.

well im not gunna lie or fake anything, im gunna talk about my opinion and im currently 15 going to be 16 soon. Ive been looking at cars since the summer researching alot on gas, safety and interior size becausse im 6′3” and have long legs. Ive seen cars that fit me and cars that dont. My mom has a 03′ envoy she bought used, and that works well except i go to a public high school so thats going to be to nice of a car for my tastes. Ive been looking at 99 to 02 camrys and i might end up getting my grandmas 03 impala. But Im smart and realize teens dont usually live in the real life and want all the nice new things. But this is just my opinion you can buy your kid a bmw or lexus or yukon and pay alot for insurance. btw insurance for a 03 impala is about 2000 for a 16 year old kid. ALOT of money for alot of people. For all the kids that are getting spoiled have fun and im not jealous what so ever, but when you graduate college and get a job you will not be driving a lexus or any expensive car like that. But this is just my opinion and you can buy whatever car you want as your first car.

okay, not gonna lie..all of you kinds sound spoiled and stuipd…but i think everyone at 16 wants a bmw, audi etc:

but getting a used wiht under 80,000 miles and no olders then 2003 is good. you can get a used bmw or audi like that for under 13,000 dollors so dont listen to all these spoiled kids, if u are on a budget then look out there and if its a little over still look, becasue in todays time u can always talk them down!

I need something that can tow a boat but will not be a giant truck or 2000-2005 sequoia (my dad already has one) I dont want to sound rich but i want a Range Rover HSE. it would be used and i like them or maybe an older Discovery. Ive found some to be around $5000. So i think there a great deal. (Plus i go to a private school and i kinda want a good looking car) and no im not rich im just fortunate enough to go there and get good grades.

Also for all u kids out there with Ferrari’s that didn’t have the right color. get over it!!! ur spoiled out of your mind! and if you want to make something out of your life buy a sensible car.

Im 17 years old and when I was 16, My grandfather sold me his 99 chevy silverado for about $7000. It has a 3 inch body lift kit, flowmaster dual exhaust system and an extended cab. I think the best cars for teen are big vehicles like pickup trucks. They will hardly ever get damged in a car accident and will not go too fast for teens. People say the tend to roll over alot, but that only because teens are stupid and like to speed around a corner. If you take it slow around the corner, then it wont roll over. Also, it is wise to get a 4×4 drive because then the truck won’t fishtail around as much in bad weather.

I’m 16 and i got my license and my parents didn’t buy me a car. I just drive my dads truck. It does what I want it to do, occasionally my dad needs it but its fine. Most of you kids are too spoiled to understand how ungrateful you are of your parents buying you SUV’s and other bigger cars. And although its unfortunate teen accidents are the highest, maybe if they drove safer than a Civic or Mazda wouldn’t be a bad choice. And I know its not the teens fault all the time but it is a lot. I have been in cars where I know its not safe to be in the car cause the driver is just reckless (texting, listening to iPods, speeding). So I am all for teens getting a Civic or Mazda.

Sam from the first few comments in 2007, I agree completely with you, about the fact of getting an older car so its more fun and your friends dont mess with it, I wish I had done that. In April I got my first new car, Im 18 by the way, its a 2009 Honda Accord Ex-L v6 6-speed with navigation and heated leather, all loaded. Its nice but I got it for $35,000 and now everytime I bring my friends I always have to tell them to stop touching things, dont pull on the seats, dont draw on the windows, or bang on them. With my camry, a 1996, I didnt care what people did. So Im kind of looking for a really cheap second car, one I can get for like under $1000 just to use when I have a lot of friends coming with me or I just feel like not caring.
