Test drive: 2007 Audi A8 L
Writing car reviews is not generally the type of job that makes one rich. So when it came time for Philip Powell to test-drive a $94,000 Audi A8, he shed his identity as a semi-retired car nut and took on the persona of Mister Powell, Titan of Industry, with his beautiful young secretary -- sorry, personal assistant -- at his side and Max the Chauffeur behind the wheel.
Check out Philip's 2007 Audi A8 L review to see exactly what the heck I'm talking about, then give us your opinion on the all-wheel-drive A8 -- how do you think it compares to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the BMW 7-series? Click the "comments" link -- unless you too are a Titan of Industry, in which case you can have your sec-- er, assistant click the link for you. -- Aaron Gold

The A8 is and has been the best luxury car for the last 3-4 years. It’s understated yet has every feature and gimmick that you would expect in a $75+ vehicle. If letting everyone know you’ve arrived is the most important feature, then go with the other german players, but for all around quality, reliability, luxury, and drivability, there is no equal.
Mmmm.. let me see. I know lots of people who spend less to buy a home. New car in 1975 or so was $5,000? It had 4 tires, steering wheel, heater, air conditioning, power seats/windows/locks, many had digital readouts, etc, etc, etc. So what makes this car worth $70K more without at least a toilet, sink and a big screen TV with remote and couch? Sorry guys. Unless a car does a lot more than just get me from point A to point B, I just can’t see spending more than the average person makes in a year for a car. I can see a person who nearly lives in their car due to a job wanting something very comfortable but you can do that for half this price. I wonder if the car is actually $10,000 to make and $65,000 of profit?
this car, like so many before it, of which i drove one(a6 twin turbo) is for the kind of driver (not like mike j.,”the minimalist”)who has made some serious bucks, can appreciate and afford to drive brilliant engineering, but is not enraptured by the whirrling propeller(BMW), the tri star(M-B), or the other,”LOOK AT ME I’M LOADED” marques that are out there. that’s what i call class(as opposed to schmaltz or glitz). and when it comes to classy rides…audi is at the head of the class!
