Pictures of the 2008 Pontiac G8

Friday February 9, 2007

2008 Pontiac G8 show carJudging from the comments generated by the last couple of blog entries, it appears that the new Ford Taurus isn't going to generate much excitement. So how about this -- Pontiac's new full-size car, the G8. Like the now-defunct GTO, the G8 is based on a car from Holden, GM's Australian division, and it has rear-wheel-drive and a big 6-liter V8 (though it'll also be available with a V6). Unlike the GTO, it's not very subtle -- the G8 is definitely more noticeable than the G5 and G6, though thankfully it's not as over-the-top as Pontiacs of the early 90s. Officially this is a "show car"; the production G8 won't have the big 20" wheels and lowered suspension, and the grey Pontiac badge, in place of the usual red, is an experiment intended to gauge public reaction. Thoughts on the design of the new G8? Click the "comments" link below. -- Aaron Gold

Now that’s style! It makes the Taurus look old and outdated. If they stay close to the “show car” for the production vehicle, it should sell well although the NE’rn states may have some problem with the rear wheel drive.

All in all, it’s a nice looking vehicle.Holden has some nice designs and fairly well built cars down under.

G8? Where’s the romance? How about naming it the Tempest, in honor of that year they sold a bunch of them? Names starting with T are hot now!

(3) RT says:

Looks like a cheap knockoff of a BMW. How sad that GM continues its downward spiral.

February 9, 2007 at 3:07 pm
(4) eltigre says:

I would have to agree on that one. I see a hint of 5 series in there. That being said, if it looks like a BMW, then it’s pretty darn good looking. I like the styling, Pontiac has definitely stepped it up a notch these past few years.

(5) Johnster says:

Rear-wheel drive is good. 6.0 Liter V-8 is good. Only problems is that it looks kind of small. More like a small mid-size car, than a full-size car.

A poor man’s Cadillac CTS-V? Looks like fun to me.

(7) Dean says:

I’m not sure how fond I am of the wheel well proportions- making the front tires appear larger than the rear. May be just an optical illusion in the pics?

Maybe I’m getting older than I like to admit, but this seems to be another cookie-cutter copy another car look.
Where is the originality of design that cars used to have?
This looks like another no trunk space car that my wifes’ groceries wouldn’t fit into.
I remember when looking a the new models was an event. Now you just get to choose the lesser of the available evils.SAD!!!!

(9) Andre says:

I love how people judge a car based solely on one thing. The fact that GM had the cahonies to bring out a rwd sedan that is RELEVANT is the point. I’d take a good knockoff of a BMW thats just as satisfying to drive at a price point 10s of thousands less, thats an upward spiral btw.

February 10, 2007 at 1:23 pm
(10) NB says:

I’m so tired of people thinking that the only good cars are made by Honda, BMW and the like. You say GM can’t make good cars? I have had many GM cars that have been just as good or BETTER!!! My ride now is a 1998 Lumina LTZ with 198k on it. Oh, ya about the quality of the car, I bought it new and other than normal rapairs(brakes, tires, wipers) I have only had to replace the alternator once! Grow up and stop holding GM and Ford to a standard twice as high as the imports.

February 10, 2007 at 4:24 pm
(11) DK says:

It doesn’t look incredibly different from the Bonneville or Grand Prix. It looks more like an evolution of those two cars. My problem is that it still looks like a Pontiac from the 90’s, and although it doesn’t have any of the ugly plastic on the bottom half of the car, for some reason I can picture it there. I will be the minority here, but I think the new 08 Ford Taurus looks more interesting. At least it doesn’t remind me of an irrelevant late 90’s, early 00’s Ford Taurus. I also agree with NB. Give GM and Ford some slack. How about that ugly Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger? Those look like cars from the parts bins.

(12) hawaiian don says:

i guess it’s ok…kinda rehashing more of the same… i really believe that if GM is really gonna make a comeback, it’s gonna take some industry shocking breakthroughs, like the caddy cts! GM has the capital to pull it off, but do the bean counters have the patience and the will to accept that major changes, don’t come overnight. as to FORD, i really wonder if they have the staying power without a merger (with TOYOTA?) to help them stay solvent.

February 11, 2007 at 1:03 am
(13) The Man says:

There are a lot of fools in this blog. Cheap copy of a BMW. This is a good looking car so it can’t be a copy of the latest ugly BMW’s. Rehash of the same? Hawaiian idiot, the last rear wheel Grand Prix was in the 80’s. Way to go GM but don’t let the production version stray to much from the show car.

(14) JV38 says:

Looks interesting, BMW wanna be… but is not a BMW… I think, price will be the factor.

February 17, 2007 at 11:29 am
(15) pd says:

Looks like another success for GM in the on going re-tooling of their entire line. Read the CUSTOMER reviews of the 2007 Toyota Camry and not the biased “Experts”, then tell me about the great imports. Last 2 cars I’ve owned are Grand Prix and they’ve been great. The G8 looks like it will be a huge success. BUY AMERICAN!!

February 18, 2007 at 5:40 pm
(16) pino says:

This car will be a hit. I’m sure the price will be good too, the quality will be there as well. To GM, I like the
the front, everything else looks good too. My only opinion is to re-work the rear lights some. They need a more 3 dimensional appearance, try not to use round lights-everybody is doing that today–be creative.

Any hints as to what it’s going to cost?

February 19, 2007 at 10:23 pm
(18) Stewie says:

I say maybe GM is starting to turn the corner. The look matches up favorably with both Audi and BMW. However, to go farther into the corner, they cannot drop any features when they bring the car to the U.S.

February 20, 2007 at 3:32 am
(19) Nick says:

I want one. Bottom Line. The SRT-8’s from Daimler are nice, but all seem a bit disproportioned IMO.

I have been a Mustang owner for years counting 7 total, currently an 03 Cobra.

But I want room to stretch out and still blast down the road.

Rented a Vette for a week in Hawaii, Sold me on GM’s effort to improve quality. But Holden (G8/Commodore) has already been leaps ahead in Australia than its counterparts here in the states.

G8= awesome looks, torqey engine, but change the name to something someone will remember.

February 26, 2007 at 1:10 am
(20) Stephen H. says:

Stewie – a goodpick up on the BMW Audi lines. Holden actually used the last series BMW and A6 to benchmark handling, control etc. In OZ I own what is called a Calais which has exactly the same sports suspension – all I did was and factory 20″ wheels. the outcome is sensational handling for an 1800kg car.

February 26, 2007 at 11:10 pm
(21) Stephanie says:

I drive a G6 now and I love it. I just don’t know if I love it enough to get another one once my lease is up. I will totally be test driving this one!

The only issue…the front tires do look a little bigger than the back…maybe not.

I’m anxious to know the price!

February 27, 2007 at 1:05 am
(22) stephen H. says:

Although specs may be slightly different from OZ to USA I can advise that the wheels are all the same. Try going to http://www.holden.com.au and you may get some good info.

February 27, 2007 at 1:12 am
(23) Stephen H. says:

For you car nuts in USA have a look at http://www.hsv.com.au – this is the Holden aftermarket mob that releases the hotter versions (307KW vs 270KW + MRC suspension)

this car is awesome! everything about it is absolutely perfect! I have always liked Pontiac, and now I like it even more! I am definately buying one!

(25) Peter G says:

I just bought a 2006 Grand Prix and I love the car…If I could have waited, I probably would have looking at the G8. This car looks awesome. I think GM needs a little bit more credit. In the last few years they have really turned themselves around…160 000 km warranty? I don’t see any other car mfg’ers offering that. As for the whole Pontiac vs BMW thing…well…if I wanted to spend an extra $10 000 – $20 000 for a brand name, i would, but i think everyone can find a better way to spend that kind of money. Btw, is is it just me, or does this new G8 pick up some styling q’s from the Acura TSX and Acura TL?

March 15, 2007 at 11:51 am
(26) TL says:

I am a 2000 GTP owner and I finally believe GM got it RIGHT!! I was not impressed with the current GP at all, loved the concept, but hated the production. Now, it seems that GM finally thought about the performance nutz out there!! Good looks, great suspension and an engine to back it up. I am so happy to be able to get a Holden quality vehicle with 4 doors, without a backwards radio!!! I know the aftermarket guys are going to have a field day with this car!!!

Peter G is right on with the comparo to the Acura TL and TSX. I saw that as soon as I checked the pic out on the front of Motor Trend. I am cool with that…those cars look good on the road. I would like to have HID lights though. I never thought I would say this, but I am now tossed up between the new G8 and…the new CTS??!! I thought I would NEVER want a Caddy, but it they sure aren’t the Cadillacs my dad used to drive!!! LMAO!!!

(27) Tavares Barkers says:

Hi i love this car this is all i have been talking about since the April 2007 motor trend. I just hope that i will be able to afford one when i get out of college in two years.

(28) CaraD says:

To RT and eltigre: isn’t every car a bit of a knock off? The only reason there are a million SUV’s is because some manufacturer came up with it!
RT: you might want to keep up with current events – GM is now profiting!

March 23, 2007 at 2:30 pm
(29) CaraD says:

NB: you are so right! It’s also worth mentioning, even with the loss GM has incurred lately (however, have profitted this last quarter!), they are still the largest car manufacturer in the world! It seems GM knows what they are doing.

This so-called downward spiral was only GM not making as many BILLIONS as they did in the past. Come on “downward spiral” my a**.

Also, my dad’s BMW is a piece of junk and so is a friend’s BMW.

As for this specific car, I already have the inside skinny on it, and it’s already in high demand and not enough are going to be produced out of Australia. As you might notice, I work for GM.

March 23, 2007 at 2:44 pm
(30) CaraD says:

I should make all my statements at once..sorry.

To BigD: the cost is not set in stone at this point as it’s only a demo right now. However, the ‘talks’ of the cost are around $25,000 but obviously, that depends on what model/upgrades you want.

Peter G – you are right; styling tips from the Acura TL.

rt is living in his ‘anti-american car’ delusion.

this car is GREAT looking, and even in it’s 6 cylinder version, has 270 plus horsepower.

bmw’s are proven pieces of crap, along wtih mercedes. german cars are for some reason rotten cars AND they’re expensive.

to say its a bmw knockoff is admitting you know nothing about cars…you just listen to others and hope they got it right.

People only give American cars acclaim when everyone’s in love with it. example like the 300c, this cars is cheap but it looks good. I understand that we expect more from the big three but if the consumer are always bad mouthing every attempt without looking at it twice then what’s the point. Americans are holding on to old idea’s of the big 3 making bad cars. The effort is there most wont “Americans” acknowledge it. American is making cars for Americans but most people are looking to Asia for the next big thing. I drive asia made car, but the big three has my attention.

I just read an interresting review of the Pontiac G8/Holden commodore @ wardauto.com, appart from saying that it’s a great car they said that Holden(australia)is designing/building a v12 for cadilac… very interesting.

(35) Louie says:

how can anyone knock this car? its so nice in every way, its sporty and mean looking, its classy, the interior is beautiful its got more horsepower than any jap car, its hits the bullseye on the sport sedan car, bar none one of the top 10 cars out there, and since its american that makes it even better!

May 13, 2007 at 3:44 am
(36) Ant says:

Honestly the car is great as well as pretty much all of the new GM vehicles. As far as a BMW copy has anyone looked at the new Lexus LS which looks just like a 750, but Toyota is always praised for its styling when they have been copying cars for years.

I am a person who very rarely passes comment on anything.I spend everyday at least an hour on auto industry.Deeply look into design flaws and constant changes in the industry. For the 1st time after getting burned with 3GM cars in the last 12 yrs , I have come upon a neat, attractive, flawless designed car.For the 1st time I think GM has got it right thanks to the Aussies. Reliabilty will be left to history but as far as pics and spec are concerned it looks promising.I suppose only at the tip of extinction GM woke up. Some of the GM models out till lately were laughable in design, fit & finish and reliability. Finally things seems to be turning around.

(38) curtis says:

Finally!! pontiac is listening to it’s customers…the new G8 definitely boasts and aftermarket appeal with dignity and a sophisticated touch. I have own a late model 2000 grand prix gtp coupe, refused to purchase the most recent model 2003-2007 because of it boring appeal and size. The G8 definitely overcomes the GTO syndrome and hopefully puts the GTO back on the drawing board for a retro rebirth of the 67 GTO. I love the lines of the G8 and the postured fender flares but most of all the interior is excellent in touch…no more hyper plastic cheap looking material and appearance. Thanks to the heads at Pontiac for finally getting close to the mark Pontiac has to set in the GMC world.

July 14, 2007 at 2:45 am
(39) Dustin says:

Hey guys, does anyone know who came up with the split grill design? Was it pontiac or bmw? I think the answer to that question will put an end to the “knock-off” comments.
I like BMWs, but I’m really looking forward to seeing Pontiac give us vehicles that compete. If they’re competing, then all the cars will be getting better and better. Better for us consumers – Capitolism Rocks!

I hope the g8 does well.

August 2, 2007 at 10:50 pm
(40) Jeff says:

The grill isn’t stolen from BMW its Pontiac’s standard design see G6, Grad Prix etc. Admittedly there are similarities but BMW’s looks much more stylish and Pontiac’s is flat ugly. Pontiac blew it’s opportunity to break out of the ugly american sedan market. And yes i know its aussie but reality is cars are built internationally today and the Aussie style for the grill was way nicer.

Gm if this car is replacing the current grand prix, get rid of the letters gt. Give the G8 its own name G8 its a V-8( not G8-gt). Great looking car hate it took so long for you guys to build it, same car as the 2000 concept grand prix G8 far as specs and performance. Gm thanks for giving the public what they want. love it!!!!

(43) Barry says:

I am currently driving a Grand Prix GXP, which is truly a great & fun car to drive. I would be very disappointed if Pontiac does not include the heads up display on the G8, which is replacing the GP.

(44) Scott says:

My wife and I have owned two BMW’S (not my choice) I now own a 2006 Grand prix GXP. Honestly the gxp handles better and is more comfortable than the 325i. If I knew the G8 was coming out when I bought the gxp, I would have waited.

EVERYBODY….its just a car. we have bigger issues, but i drove this car yesterday for a day. yes a few marks off for bizarre location and sizes of controls….but “set it, and forget it” and thank you god for steering wheel controls!! it launches right outta of the box….at the request of the salesman. i aint buying the tester because i took about 500 miles of tread off the skins. expenisive? i spoze….gas mileage? could be better. but driving experience? damn near perfect. i am ditching my deisel jetta for some fun. my son can go to community college
