General Motors to buy Chrysler?
Reports in today's Automotive News (story here, registration required) say that Daimler-Chrysler hasn't ruled out spinning off the Chrysler division. No surprise there -- lots of us thought the whole purpose of buying Chrysler was for Daimler (aka Mercedes) to get their hands on the lucrative Jeep franchise (which, with the introduction of the 2007 Jeep Compass, has totally jumped the shark*). That the report comes on the same day Daimler-Chrysler announced that they will cut 13,000 jobs isn't much of a surprise either.
But another Automotive News story said that one possible buyer for Chrysler is General Motors. Now that is a surprise.
What would happen in a world where General Motors bought Chrysler? Would we see the GMC Acadia become the basis for the next Jeep Grand Cherokee? Would the Chevrolet HHR, which looks like a rebadged Chrysler PT Cruiser, actually become a rebadged Chrysler PT Cruiser? Would I finally be able to get my dream pickup, a GMC Sierra with Dodge's Cummins turbodiesel? Would we get an American sedan that looks as good as the Chrysler Sebring and drives as well as the Saturn Aura?
And most importantly, would the addition of the Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep brands give GM the boost it needs to regain its position of prominence -- or would the whole thing come crashing down in a flaming heap of corporate wreckage? What are the combined losses for those 2 companies last year? For some reason I recall GM at almost $6B and Chrysler stated something north of $1B.
With over $7B in red ink, I am not sure how anyone could consolidate those 2 companies to make something good.
The way I see it the auto industry is in the toilet right now. No one (except maybe Toyota) is in a position to talk about buying someone else’s distressed brand.
Everyone is just going to have to “man up” and fix their own problems – or just shut it down completely. Maybe it’s just time to weed out the weak – survival of the fittest.
The whole thing will come crashing down. This will be the straw to break the backs of both companies
you could use the same thinking for Irack or middel east.
IF the U.S. auto industry is is to survive tehy must merge
I can’t say that I am shocked to see that Chrysler is having money woes. Their ONLY affordable and reasonably fuel efficient car in their line up is the Caliber. An unrefined auto, plagued with poor build quality issues.
The other models, a high output V6 or the legendary Hemi V8. Both huge gas guzzlers. The 300 and the Charger are great cars for weekend rubber burning but not practical or economical for the everyday family hauler.
Given consumers are buying fuel efficeint compacts over anything else, Chrysler needs to build a high quality sub-compact that can stand up to the Civic or Corolla.
Given that 30 to 40% of the cars sold in Canada are compacts, Chrysler needs to stop subsidizing the oil companies and give the consumers what they want.
If not Ciao to Chrysler and long live Toyota and Honda.
If they don’t then Toyota might and that would push them into top spot quicker then estimated.
When you merge 2 losers, you simply end up with one huge loser. This defies logic.
Rather than looking for an out, why don’t both companies design and build a GOOD car. “Good” means fit and finish, style, appointments and reliability.
Take a look at the list of disasters from both companies which range from the HHR to the Rendezvous at GM and the Durango to the Caliber at Chrysler.
This ain’t rocket science, folks!!!
I can’t imagine how two money losing companies merging would be anything less than a disaster. Remember when Studebaker took over Packard? Where are they now??
Just can’t see a GM/Chrysler company. GM has too many problems of its own to take on another problem company. Even to try to get their hands on the Jeep brand. Of course Mercedes may decide to keep Jeep and get rid of the rest. A more probable venture to me would be Nissan or a Chinese company. Nissan wants to keep up with Toyota. Chrysler might give them more market and help Chrysler with building smaller, lighter cars. The down side would be that Nissan already has an established network in America and doesn’t really need more dealers/facilities. China has the ability to get all the money it needs with state run everything so it could get a foot in the U.S. as well as take care of Chrysler’s debt. However, I think a China venture would not survive. I don’t believe America is ready for a car “made in China” whether actually assembled in the U.S. or not. “Made in China” still stands for cheap and short term.
Regardless of the “expert” opinions, I think an independent Chrysler would be the best idea. Further cutbacks might be in order to make that fly but they could have a lot less internal red tape that might result in better cars. Chrysler went from “dead” to profitable before and could again with the right leaders. Even as a smaller, specialized company with few models but good selection of options. Give each car/truck options up the gazoo. Basically, a car built the way you want it. A variety of interior options, colors and drive trains. One of my complaints about all the makers is the “if you want that option, you have to take all these too”. Learn something from computers “plug and play” where each mounting bracket or port hole can be used for multiple options. Like a vent for an A/C could be converted to a CD holder if the buyer didn’t want A/C. Or a small speaker could be put in the same spot, etc. Build all the car frames so any engine can fit (at least with mount changes). You want a 4 ton car with a 4 cylinder engine, you got it. You want a 2 door subcompact with a Hemi V8, you got it. You want a mid sized car with Lincoln/Cadillac luxury, you got it. You just interested in 4 wheels, motor, heater and a seat, you got it. (simplified examples but you get the idea)
GM already has to many brands/makes/models. This would only confuse the 2 companies more. It would be a very bad move for both companies.
Cars have always come down to looks, affordability and practicality, in that order. If you could picture yourself looking good in it, it was within your price range, and it reasonably suited your uses, then that’s what you picked. First off, you don’t look good stuck on the side of the road with your hood popped up, and puddles of oil trailed out behind you. So that just leaves japanese makes. To tell you the truth, I’ve rented enough American cars and minivans on vacation or in between accidents to realize that there are much better products that last much longer than the Big Three can make. Take the best ideas from each, and mold it into a good looking car that costs less without rebates, and can be relied on for at least 200,000 miles. The Japanese have been doing this for decades, and hence their current rise and dominance. The Koreans have followed suit to much hoorahs from the automotive press, surpassing hurdles of quality and image that 2 decades ago were mountains. Honestly, they’ve gotten prettier, while american cars got uglier. There are obviously the few beautiful american cars, but most people don’t drive those. Hit the meat of the market like the Accord or Camry. Don’t reserve all the best designs for the Corvette, which doesn’t have nearly the sales potential. Whatever. Good day y’all.
GM needs to lose another division not add one. They already have Hummer. Either Pontiac or Buick should be absorbed, probably Buick. Then more resources could be devoted to making the models they do have competitive.
Chrysler needs to be paired with a company that fills out the luxury performance offerings of Chrysler or expands the entry level offerings of Dodge. Maybe a second tier Korean or Japanase company, if the Japanese govt. would it allow controlling interest.
If this were as outlandish as people make it out to be, it wouldn’t be churning through the rumor mill.
The way to profitability for these corporations is continuing to accelerate the introduction of good product. This has begun although a few reactionaries are still trying to deny it. While increasing overall quality, costs need to be cut dramatically. This will be acheived primarily through overseas production and continued downsizing in the US to literally cut out the leaches er unions.
Consolidating Chrysler and GM could potentially scale down each domestic operation to a much greater degree than they otherwise would be able to do individually. In other words if you had to scale back 30% of factories to be profitable but needed 80% to produce the current line up, you would remain in negative cash flow. If however you consolidated the two companies and their resources, you might be able to scale back much further by utilizing each others best resources.
I say that all three should merge, therefore that could save a ton of money on one bankruptcy filing vs. three. All three of them are wandering in the wilderness and we all know misery loves company, so they should wait for the bitter end together.
The two LAST things GM needs: more brands to manage/differentiate and additional production capacity. That rumor belongs on the cover of the National Enquirer.
Unless all three quit paying full pay to the thousands of employees in the “job bank program” Toyota will continue to eat their lunch. The 13,000 will get full pay to do nouthing except increase the losses.
The solution to this problem is vague and nebulous. As a matter of fact, i don’t see a solution to Japanese domination until American businesses radically alter their hierachy. The most protuberant feature about American cars is their CONSUMPTION OF GAS. My Toyota Corolla gets twice the mileage (33) of say a typical GM make. Companies in America certainly need to make more investments in fuel EFFICIENCY. until then sales will continue to plummet.
Another key factor is probably the inefficiency of the marketing department. GM has so many more brands in comparison with Toyota that one has almost no idea which is which. Instead of spreading revenue in a million directions – all in futility – Chrysler and GM ought to consider investing heavily in 3 to 5 prime, popular brands with the American market and make it even more powerful. Toyota is doing it with Corolla, Camry and Sienna; Honda with Accord. As for GM, i can’t name one that really meets the standards of Camry.
ZZ:
So WHAT should GM and Chrysler do – merge?????
Obviously, i think they should. There’s an old saying in China that 3 average people can equal 1 genius. I’m not guaranteeing that 2 negatives make a positive, but i am pretty sure that unless the American market does something (i e – merge two big corporations) all will be apocalyptical.
These doomsayers are too much. The fact that the UAW has a stranglehold on Chrysler is enough to push anyone away yet alone GM. They aren’t going to merge. Mercedes has to put more money into them, you have to remember that Chrysler made a profit in 05 while Mercedes made a LOSS and they aren’t gonna dump Mercedes. What Daimler should do is absorb Maybach back into Mercedes and either make Smart work or use it’s platforms for new small Chryslers. GM would be making money like mad if it didn’t have to shoulder all those retirees that imports don’t have to because of local laws within their own countries. I don’t think fuel efficiency is the answer. I would rather run a car on ethanol that was PZEV or ZEV that got 20 mpg and know my local farmers are being supported than buy a hybrid.
If G M buys Chrysler I will not purchase another Chrysler car .if G M. had some Good looking cars in my price range.I mite by one. GM they need to change their own thinking an not blame the people to assemble what than design.
This will be a terrible if GM gets its oily hands on Chrysler. They all ready own 8 major car companies and 3 smaller companies. If this happens they will get 3 more and GM will have a straggle hold on the American car company’s. Then there will be only 2 major car manufactures GM and Ford. And GM will do what it pleas with the Chrysler group. This is starting to look like the Phone company’s all buying each other up and becoming 1 big company.
And while the American manufactures duck it out with each other the Japanese car manufactures will get even bigger (NOT that it’s a bad thing I drive a Toyota). And I hear people say they will not get a new Japanese car that they will only get American cars. That is WRONG the Japanese cars now are more American then the American cars. More American cars are made over seas then the Japanese cars. One of the biggest plants in America is a Toyota plant in Kentucky I believe. Japanese manufactures employ more Americans then American manufactures. The Number #1 car in America is the Camry and I think soon the #1 Truck will be the NEW Tundra. If GM takes over Chrysler I think this will be even worse for American cars. GM will cut more jobs and get rid of some of Chryslers cars. BUT Chryslers dose need to make better quality cars I think they need more time with (Benz) I believe that they will help the quality of the cars.
AND I love MOPAR I have a old Mopar as well some of the major fans of Mopar will go some where ells if this happens. So Chrysler needs to say NO to GM and give it some time then go
get rid of that stupid european look and design some decent lookinh cars maybe i;lbuy one
GM would destroy the design capabilities of Chrysler. Some of the ugliest cars in America are GM designs. No proportion, confusing lines and visually disturbing. Can you say Aztek? Or Pontiac anything? Chrysler is a better designed product and manufacturer and I hope they stay independent.
I would hope Fiat or Peugeot would equal the playing field and it could be real good for consumers. I have Honda S2000, Lexus RX, two Sedan Devilles, Volvo, Trooper, Miata, vans, pickups and on and on. I have had Mercedes and many others. My favorite car is the 505. The Japanese, in my opinion, do not know how to make a good suspension. It is an art. The French and Italiens do. I agree with so many others, GM lost their marbles when it comes to design. Looking at any Pontiac you feel embarrassed. Looking at the new Peugeots, you feel catapulted into the future. Well, I’ll just dream in the meantime.
Hey Lars, you forgot to mention the Humvee with the .50 caliber machine gun on top.
I believe that GM is heading for inpennding doom if they acquire the trouble Chrysler Automotive group. Crysler has been a money losing venture for years. Daimler is smart fr cutting it’s loses and getting away from Chrysler. Chrysler has had so many failures with styling, perforance, and numerous other issues. This automaker should pull the plug and let Chrysler go down in history just like AMC,YUGO, and the oher failures in the automotive industries.
It’s to bad that the once proud american automakers have to reduce themselves to this, you know, the inventors of the automobile, the ones that are chasing their behind because foreign automakers are dominating……come on, quit making the same car or truck under three different brands, be smart
I don’t see that it makes any sense for GM to buy Chrysler unless it was at a bargain basement price where the assets were worth much more than the selling price. GM has enough brands already (probably too many). On the other hand, they would finally get a good minivan, and the Chrysler 300, hemi engine etc. to boot. What about all of the technology sharing that Chrysler has done with Daimler though – that could be a problem.
They should do it. if for no other reason than to stop toyota from doing it. Right now they are still the biggest company and if they let toyota take that then the might as well close the doors because they will never recover.
I would jump at the chance to buy a pickup from this conglomerate with a Cummins engine and an Allison Transmission.
GM buying Chrysler???
GM has too many vehicles, is still totally unfocused. I can’t force myself
to buy one of their cars. They had the
best deal on the table with Nissan, why bother with a totally nonfunctional co.
like Chrysler? The only thing they have of value is Jeep, everything else is crap. Personally I like Honda and
VW, my next car will be a Jetta.
What is the standing of the Canadian Companies?
I think if you let them become independant Companies that they will do very well in Canada.
I think the Unions need to help as well by not demanding the world and breaking the Bank.
Wow, this is amazing. I wonder what would happen. Honestly, it’s not going to happen. DCX will stay the same. I promise.
After reading the other comment’s it seams like no one has the same opinion. I think that it would be a very bad idea for Chrysler to join with General Motors, their high competitors and too different. First of all General Motors is retarded when it comes to designing cars, they look like they slap a bunch of metel together and roll it off the lot before they finish. Chrysler is too classy for them, they have a totally different theme going on. Chrysler will go down the tubes if GM buys them. And I hope Daimler stays as far away from GM as possible because they are way too out of their league!!
Automotive ugliness is cyclical. Every design house – including Pininfarina – is guilty of an ugly car somewhere along the way. Remember when Chrysler had the dubious lineup of “melting jelly beans” a few years ago? Today, their designs are much better. Look at the Datsun, Nissan, Toyota, and Honda designs from the past. Some of them were comically unattractive. That’s why nearly all of today’s global automakers have a design studio in the USA. Admittedly, the GM brainiac that thought the Aztek was appealing needs to rethink that decision, but Pontiac isn’t alone. Hyundai, Toyota, BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, and Kia have warts too. In 3 or 4 years the “honor” will rotate to a different marque, but rest assured that more than 1 automaker will continue to have a butt-ugly model on the showroom floor every year.
Wow! I never realised how many idiots live in this country. If some of you who talk about your japanese cars think that the downsizing of America’s industrial base is not going to affect you, then you need to go smoke some more of that crap you are smoking! This country is decimating it’s ability to maintain even our own armed forces, and you guys are bragging about your Toyota’s. You guys are probably the same kind of people as those Hispanics who say they just want to come here illegally and work, and then go out and demonstrate by burning tha american flag and waving the mexican flag!
Imagine a Vette with a HEMI. Or a Viper/Vette hybrid. A viper that weighs what a vette weighs would be a kick ass racer.
Putting GM & Chrysler together is like putting the Titantic and Lusitania together and hoping it would stay afloat. This merger (assuming if it will ever get done) doesn’t have a chance in hell of succeeding.
You guys are all dumb thinking this cant be great if you read and find out why they are loosing money then you would know. The companies are spending millions paying off employees that have been there for years. These employees are making 75 grand to work a line once they get rid of all these expenses then both companies will be booming
As for gas consumptions who cares who wants a piece of crap slow car whne you can have power and respect no one respect an import. they need to make cars like the 70’s and early 80’s then who would want import GO GM I will never buy anything other then GM cause they are the best cars and easiest to work on no need to be a technician
That would actually be a great fit. It would be nice to see the last of the American companies combine even if it meant adding Ford ,to be strong enough to battle the imports. We know we have the quality and style, somehow the message isn’t getting out. Together as a great American auto co. I believe it would
I don’t think GM has the resources to pull it off. If they do both parts will have to drop brands. GM will have to get rid of Pontiac/GMC, Hummer and SAAB. Chrysler will have to get rid of Chrysler and only keep Dodge and Jeep. Dodge would have to replace Pontiac and Jeep would have to replace Hummer. The Jeep Compass would have to go so would the Dodge Caliber and Stratus/Avenger. The GM minivans would share chassis and drivelins with the Caravan and the Sprinter would have to be dropped. The Ram would have to be a performance truck sharing chassis and drive line with the Silverado.
when it comes to GM I think it is a no brainer they build too much JUNK and sell it at outrageous prices. Dailmer should look to Renault/Nissan. I’ve had 2 Nissan PU’s and my has an Altima I think that the US big 3 could learn from our friends across thje pond.
I am a died in the wool die-hard GM driver. However, having said that, I’m wondering how a company that is operating at such a loss could conceivably think of buying another competitor? What gain would there be?
It seems that the “Big 3 domestics” haven’t figured it out yet. The asian cars are being built with more, quality; more panache and more general appeal price-wise and otherwise. The “Big 3″ are still holding on to the idea that Bigger is still better. It may be for a short time, but what then after the asian cars have achieved domestic status by building more factories and hiring more Canadians to produce better priced and better built vehicles that have public appeal and meet public needs. Then what? They need to wake up and smell the coffee!
The days of “only in America, you say!” are gone. Foreign car makers with domestic status are making large inroads on a daily basis. While the Big 3 are laying off workers and closing plants, foreigners are re-tooling and redoubling their efforts to take a bigger piece of the North American car pie. Based on track record and strategies to become profitable, the Big 3 could be cutting of their noses to save their face as it were. I say to them: “Lead, follow or get out of the way!” China’s coming. Who’s next?
GM purchasing Chrysler does bode well for GM if for than no other reason than acquiring Jeep and assuming the relationship Chrysler has with Cummins. The diesel engines used by Ford and GM in their light trucks are miserable and failure prone. Cummins would put GM at the forefront of the light truck market. Unfortunately the UAW would rather take a poison pill and see both corporations fail with the attendant loss of jobs before allowing the job losses necessary for the restructuring.
So be it.
Ken
You people saying GM is loosing money need to get your facts straight before opening your mouth. GM had a 33% increase over 05 and a 67% increase over 2004. You don’t know how corporate Finance works but I can break down on simple terms. I plan to make 500 dollars today. I only make 300. I report a loss of 200. I actually lost nothing. As far as the gas mileage goes 9 out of 10 GM cars get better than 30 MPG Highway and a Malibu, G6, Cobalt, G5 etc all get about 36 MPG on the Road, Even the 2006 Corvette I own gets 34 MPG on the Highway at 75! I can also do over 200 MPH with it. Let me see another car company on this planet get over 400 HP and over 32 MPG! Now thats excellent and lets not forget that GM has been the technology leader since 1910. GM had fuel injection in the 1950’s 30 to 40 years before anyone even knew what it was. Thank GM for Headlights, electric starters, power steering, Hydraulic brakes, ETC. Finally, quality has improved dramatically as well. Imports are the ones that need to go. A Corolla pulled out in front of me and a friend of mine and we nailed it and the car came in two and our Z71 Silverado was not hurt, The airbags didn’t even come out, Guy in the corolla went to the hospital for two weeks. Just toll another one up to GM. (by the way we just love pulling out Tacoma’s, Tundra’s, ETC.) I think injecting some of GM’s sucess into Chrylser is just what the US Market needs. Long Live GM. To see just how many GM’s make it over 200,000 go to http://www.chevy200k.com
i don’t think they should join because, they have been rivals for years, me personaly i am a dodge man. I don’t think it would last for long either….
I’m surprised no one has mentioned GM’s ageing minivans. Chrysler vans are modern and competitive. It would be a good opportunity for GM to phase out their 10 year old face-lifted models. The Jeep brand would also be a nice addition for GM — as mentioned by the other posters. Other than that, I don’t see any reason why GM would want to take Chrysler under its wing.
Ok now I have heard nothing but bad things from those that have owned GMs. As for me my 1975 Dart and my 1996 Ram have been the best vehicles yet. The Dart ran for 336K miles before rebuild. The timing gear was slick and the timing chain was stretched, but the timing itself was only 7 degrees off and the car still ran. My truck had a bad catalytic converter and still ran like a champ. I have not heard of a GM vehicle. You know when they make a mistake when you have to re run the alternator wires because they are too close to the exhaust and burn in half. Also they make a special removal tool for a part that is known to break due to metal composition.
Well, my parents didn’t have much luck with their ‘73 Dart and ‘78 Omni. Their ‘67 Dart was a good car.
At the end, I think Hyundai is going to buy Chrysler.. Putting away all the passion for American/Asian origin, it seems both companies could benefit from such a merge. If not, I agree on trying to keep Chrysler as an independent company…
I would like to see GM buy Chrysler, however I do not see how GM can afford to buy Chysler group. I just read how they are considering selling Allison transmission to focus on its “core” business of making autos. I think it is in America’s best interest to keep Chysler an American company. Not to mention all the technological collaboration between Chrysler and GM on the dual mode hybrid drive. Who would want to see all of that money spent on R&D just go to a foreign company? If you look at history, the Amercian auto industry has always designed the vehicles and then the foreign auto makers have copied and improved on these designs. The camry is a great car, however if one looks at a camry and then looks at a dodge charger – which one would you rather have? The charger has that design appeal that invokes pride in ownership – a truly cool looking car. The camry looks like what? It has the design appeal of a commuter car. My two cents on the issue…
Dee’s (2/17) comparing a GM/Chysler merger with two doomed ships(the Lusitania and Titanic)unsuccessfully trying to keep each other afloat was perfect.
Although this is hardly a popular opinion, I think the current Chrysler Group would prosper with a Chinese owner/partner such as Chery or Geely. Both Chinese companies profess the desire to move into the global market aggressively. The Chinese would instantly gain an existing dealership, parts and service organization in the largest automotive market in the world to sell their current entry-level product line. Plus the Chinese would introduce the larger Mopar cars and trucks into their domestic market without the difficulty and expense of designing this line themselves. Chrysler would fill its need for entry-level vehicles in the US and a future unlimited market for its products in China.
Everyone would benefit from a scenario such as this – the economies of both countries, the creation of new jobs and the perpetuation of Chryler into the foreseeable future. All the opinions drawing on past GM and Chrysler glories need to face the reality of global competition and embrace the change. Hopefully the Carpathia will arrive in time to save us all!
Where is Lee Iacocca now that he is once again needed by chrysler corp, they need someone like him to get them back in the I didn’t like the idea of chrysler being Sold into german ownership And would like to have it back in the hands of american ownership by someone other than GM witch is only interested in keeping the jeep division and chrysler and dodge mini vans and would kill off everything else as far bad cars go ford and Gm have also had thier share of all out Bad cars and as far as gas hogs ford and GM both have models that are just as much of a gas hog
Really GM will exceed all auto makers in the world, GM deserve to be the first company and I say to GM congratulation
I hope to keep General Motors about the sperit of Chrysler Corp.and I hope to keep the full size.
Aaron check the facts dodge had efi way before gm crap and you should let someone smarter than you to figure out your fuel mileage and i have had lots of vans with over 500000k on them
I think GM buying Chrysler would make for a strong foot hold in the world market, and in the long run creating more U.S. jobs. Better than letting some Chinese or Korean car company buy it, and keeping all the jobs over in Asia.
poor chrysler corp? mexico did not work out? to bad mexicans dont buy new cars in mexico maybe if thet kept production in the usa americans would feel better abought purchasing an american car I dont feel sorry for chrysler as I got laid off from a chrysler dealership due to poor sales
Yes, let them merge. GM needs to take some of the technolgoy and vehicles. Take Jeep, some of Chryler’s luxury appointments, and the minivans. Dump the rest and GIT RID OF THOSE BLOOD SUCKING UNIONS!!! THEY ARE KILLING AMERICAN COMPANIES… What is that saying…cuttig off your nose despite your face! GM is bringing its A Game. Look at the aura and the silverado/sierra! Wahoo! Can you imagine the jeep/hummer SUV or The Caddilac/Chrysler Luxury!
labor is less than 15% of the price of a new car ! so blame something else on the blood sucking unions !! that is right after you union bashers get informed on the things you comment on that you obviously know very little about.
Buy American it will be your own job and life that you save. How anyone can buy a Honda or Toyota or other asian junk and say its an American made car because it is built here is crazy. All that money is going back to asia to build a war machine that will someday rule us. How stupid are we really. We are selling ourselves out to the enemy one car, tv,microwave,mp3 player at a time.Mark my words. Asia has enough people and now we are giving them the money to rule the world.
innovation built g.m. innovation can fix it. g.m. needs to go back to its roots. theres an old building in detroit they cant sell its called the general motors corporation headquarters. its almost as old as the company itself.get rid of your waste dont buy more. start building cars and trucks that have style and are econominacle. get rid of your overlapping car lines and overlapping dealerships.drive into the future as the greatest auto manufacturer of all time.wake up g.m.
I believe that the merger of these two large companies could possibly form a monopoly by creating the greatest pickup of all time, a silverado with a mans diesel a 24 valve cummins turbo diesel
its not the labor that puts the price up on cars it health insurance the cost of health insurance per person is more than the price of steel that goes into each car
ok look i do not approve of a gm/chrysler joining what so ever chrysler is an awsome company that has one of the best car companies under its wings Dodge. Dodge is my main concern if gm buys chrysler then what happens to dodge? Chrysler and gm have been rivals for years and dodge and cheverolet have also. The two joining is not likely i would rather have toyota or someone buy chrysler. i am also worried about my favorite car the dodge viper could you imagine corvette and viper being brothers ahhhh scary!
gm buying chrysler? out of the question i am a chrysler/dodge/jeep guy and just the thought of that crappy car company buying chrysler sends shivvers down my spine i cannot see the dodge viper becoming the corvette’s brother
AS TO ALL YOU HIPOCRITES WHO ONLY KNOW HOW TO COMMENT AND NEVER SEE THE BIG PICTURE, YOU SOCIALISTS BUY JAPENESE CARS FOR THEIR ECONOMY, YOU WORK IN THE USA AND PAY USA TAX DOLLARS, YET YOU BUY EVERYTHING MADE IN CHINA AND JAPAN, AND THEN YOU COMPLAIN WE (AMERICANS) CAN’T CATCH UP TO THE JAPS, SOLUTION: STOP SENDING YOUR MONEY TO JAPAN AND DEFEATING YOUR OWN US COMPANIES BY DOING SO, IT IS SIMPLE ECONOMICS, YOU HIPOCRITES ARE PUTTING US JOBS, FAMILIES, COMPANIES AND EVENTUALLY THE WHOLE UNITED STATES ECONOMY IN THE MERCY OF FOREIGN COMPETETORS WHO ARE OUT WITH A VENGEANCE TO DEFEAT THE U.S. MARKET, AND EVERY DIME YOU SPEND WITH TOYOTA, HONDA, MAZDA, NISSAN, AND ALL OTHER JAPENESE AND KOREAN CARS LIKE KIA AND HYUNDAI, INCLUDING THE FUTURE OF CHINESE CARS, YOU ARE DEFEATING YOUR OWN COUNTRY AND ITS COMPANIES…. BE VERY AFRAID OF THE DAY WHEN THE BIG THREE LOSE THEIR FOOTHOLD ON THE CAR MARKET, THE U.S. ECONOMY WILL BE DOOMED AS WELL, THEY MAKE UP A GREAT CHARE OF THE WORK FORCE AND THE ECONOMIC SYSTEM WHICH THEY SUPPORT AND U.S. MARKETS WILL CRASH FOR MONTHS IF ANY OF THE BIG THREE SHUT DOWN, THIS IS ALL BECAUSE ALL AMERICANS HAVE BECOME SELFISH, WITH NO LOYALTY TO OTHER WORKERS AND NO PLANNING EXCEPT FOR THEIR IMMEDIATE BENEFIT WITHOUT GIVING THOUGHT TO FUTURE GENERATIONS WHICH WILL PAY DEARLY FOR ALL THE SELFISHNESS BEGUN WHEN PEOPLE FORGOT ABOUT LOYALTY AND SUPPORTED HONDA AND TOYOTA IN BECOMING THEIR CHEAP WAY OUT. I CAME TO THIS COUNTRY IN 1985 FROM LEBANON AS A CHRISTIAN WHO BELIEVED IN LIFE, BUT ONLY FOUND OUT THAT IN THIS COUNTRY ITS CITIZENS ARE SELLING THEIR LIFE BY BUYING EVERYTHING NON AMERICAN, TRUST ME, THIS IS A WAY TO ECONOMIC DOOMSDAY UNLESS OUR IMPORT TAX, CAR TAX AND OTHER TAXES ARE ADJUSTED, DID YOU KNOW THAT A FORD TAURUS IN JAPAN COSTS $48000 EQUIVALENT TO U.S. DOLLARS AND THERE IS A WAITING LIST, AND THAT IS ONE OF THE FEW YOU COULD BUY THERE? GO FIGURE…
LET ALL YOU TREE HUGGING HIPOCRITES CRY WHEN YOU HAVE NO JOBS, NO ECONOMY, NO GOVERNMENT, AND NO COUNTRY, BECAUSE A PERSON WHO HAS NO LOYALTY FOR HIS OR HER MAJOR PRODUCTS SUCH AS CARS WILL EVENTUALLY SELL HIS OR HER COUNTRY NO QUESTIONS ASKED, YOUR HIPOCRITICAL CRITISCISM SHOULD STOP RIGHT NOW, GO BUY AMERICAN AND SHUT UP, A MALIBU IS 10 TIMES THE CAR THAN A CAMRY, AND AN TAHOE IS TEN TIMES THE SUV AS A LAND CRUISER, AT LEAST IT SAYS AMERICA AND MADE IN THE USA, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY THE MONEY STAYS IN THE U.S. MARKET, I WILL BUY A CAR FROM MARS IF THE MONEY KEPT U.S. JOBS SAFE AND THE MONEY WAS RECIRCULATED IN THE U.S. MARKET, INSTEAD WE GIVE IT TO JAPAN AND IN TURN THEY BUY OUR STEEL AND BUILD MORE AND MORE TIN CAN CARS WITH OUR MONEY AND STEEL, SO KEEP THE WHEEL GOING THE WAY IT IS YOU HIPOCRITES AND THEN COMPLAIN WHEN EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE OUT OF REACH FOR YOU IN THE FUTURE, EVEN MILK…
I WISH THIS COUNTRY WILL GO BACK TO BASICS, WHERE LOYALTY MEANT SOMETHING, AND THAT LOYALTY WILL MAKE THE U.S. THE LEADEAR IN EVERYTHING AGAIN, INSTEAD EVERYONE IS SELFISH AND THINKS OF GETTING AHEAD ON A DAILY BASIS WITH A BLIND EYE TO THE FUTURE, HOW PATHETIC.
IN THE MEANTIME I KEEP DRIVING MY JEEP, MY PONTIAC BONNEVILLE 2002, MY 2004 EXPRESS VAN 3500 AND FROM MY JAPENESE CAR EXPERIENCE, I DRIVE THESE GM PRODUCTS, BECAUSE THEY ARE BETTER, BUT NOT JUST THAT, THEY ARE AMERICAN.
TONY NICHOLAS, PARAMUS, NJ AND ORLANDO, FL.
I thought Ford owned cumings anyway
“its not the labor that puts the price up on cars it health insurance the cost of health insurance per person is more than the price of steel that goes into each car”
And the UNION is what cost the Health insurance i.e. the cost of the car to be higher.
To all that love the Imports just keep purchasing them that is what makes America great freedom of choice. And when the Chinese/Japanese/Koreans own us just kiss it goodbye for Freedoms. Think it cannot happen just ask Pre Nazi Germany.
I hope that GM and CHRYSLER never merge i think that it will be a bad move and by the way guys i just got a chrysler 300c and i love it, yes, it does spend a little more gas i spend about 60 dollars a week( can put regular on that car)but so what only live once i am enjoy it i also have a toyota tacoma that i use for moving stuff and its ok but with the chrysler you got a luxury car and a fast car for much less money then if you got a lexus or cadillac I am very happy and by the way the chevy HHR its the uglyest thing i ever seen its a bigger PT CRUSER (copycats)!
I sell Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep. I’m worried that GM just wants the 11 plus Billion in liquid $$ that we have and will lay off thousands and close dealerships. Diamler sold to Ceberus for 7.4 Billion retaining 18% of Chrysler. With GM burning thru $1 billion a month, this will get them down the road 1 more year. I hate foreign cars but I would rather be sold to Nissan and have a chance!!
Its my understanding that gmac went to congress and want bail out money to buy chrysler. we should never let this happen let
Gm clean up their own mess, produce something someone wants to buy they all need to produce
gas saving vehicles.
