Saab offers free car to million-mile owners

By , About.com GuideMarch 2, 2007

Follow me on:

Peter Gilbert gets his free Saab 9-5Saab has started their own Million Mile club. Rack up one million miles in your Saab, and they'll give you the keys to a free 9-5 Aero. That's Peter Gilbert in the photo, an insurance salesman from Milwaukee, getting the keys from Saab USA General Manager Jay Spenchian. Peter racked up seven figures in his '89 Saab 900, a tenure that included -- and I quote -- "surviv[ing] many a collision with Wisconsin deer." (Do they cause more damage to cars than deer in other states?)

Now, don't think you can just run out to find a nice 900,000 mile Saab, run it back and forth across the country a few dozen times and collect your new 9-5. The offer extends to original owners only. Your million-mile Saab must be in running condition, and no sneaky tampering with the odometer either. The offer is good only 'till the end of 2007 -- so Saab owners, you'd better hit the road. -- Aaron Gold

Million Mile Saab?
Get real, I’ve heard plenty how the newer(2000 & above) Saabs are falling apart on the inside.

With cheap cars by the time you hit 1,000,000 miles with them, their interior is trash unless you meticulously clean, keep clean, and/or replace(radio is first to be replaced usually) interior components. A million mile cheap car(usually imports fare better) is rare and I would almost put money on it that those cars have 95% or higher highway miles. I’d rather try to get a million miles in a higher quality car than Saab(BMW and Audi come to mind). That said, if you have a V-Tech motor in a Civic, you have a good chance of that motor outliving the car, unless you abuse it consistently.

Also talking about quality, American cars have ’spots’ in their quality. The way I look at it, I’d rather buy a European car and pay more initially, than an American car or other imports and having to buy another car every 5yrs. You can say all you want about ‘buying American’, but if a car is well built and designed, why not pay more even if it goes to some rich German or Englishman. By the way, when I said American cars, I meant your run of the mill cars,(not Cadillac, Lincoln etc..).

1 million miles and all you get is a free Saab? That guy had to drive an average of 56k miles a year to reach 1 million by now–4 to 5 times the yearly average! Or, what if you bought a used Saab with 20k miles on it and you somehow managed to drive the other 980k miles? Would they really turn you down for a new Saab?

Pff, the whole thing is a marketing gimmick anyway. “Oh, look how reliable Saabs are; this guy drove one for 1 million miles, that means you can too!” Seriously. It’s rare enough to find a decent used car with 200k miles.

My 2003 93 was broke every 3 months, and it was something different almost every time. It would cost me too much to even try to drive 1 million miles.
