What bad driving behaviors really get your blood boiling?

Tuesday March 27, 2007

2007 Mazda 3I live in Los Angeles and drive around 400 to 500 miles per week, so I see no shortage of bad driving behavior. As long as the other idiots drivers don't do anything that endangers me or my family, I try not to let it upset me too much, but there are a couple of behaviors that always get me irked. My two least faves:

  1. People who drive slowly while looking for an address, oblivious to the traffic behind them. Would it kill you to pull over for those of us who actually know where we are going?
  2. People who merge onto the freeway and immediately pull out to the left lane -- even before they accelerate to the speed limit. Here in Los Angeles, where most of the freeways have four to six lanes in each direction, this is particularly spectacular. Why are people so obsessed with the fast lane, even if they aren't driving fast?

So what driving behaviors really drive you bonkers? Click the comments link and tell us. -- Aaron Gold

“LEFT LANE D***S” People who will not move over to the right and let faster traffic pass. This seems to be very popular among New York plates. They are a hazzard because of frustration they cause.

People who drive with cell phones glued to their ear, and cut the corners so close too almost clip you, and they are unaware, OF IT. Or the truckers who pull in so close and crowd you off the road. IDIOTS! IDIOTS! Idiots!

Im joining in to tell you that idiots are everywhere. In our fast lane you may see TRUCKS,too, and a special kind of idiots – who, with or without flashing the right light,
suddenly turn right for the right side exit.Quite often,at that Keep calm,if you can.Cheers,Mirko

Columbus, Ohio

I have driven in many different cities and in many different weather conditions, but I have never seen a city who is afraid of the rain!!??!! It is the starngest thing.. People here will drive 10-15 below the speed limits. I don’t undersdtand it. There is also at least 1 fatal accident every day that it rains. It’s the strangest thing I have ever seen.

Actually, several:

1. Cutting in front of me and hitting the brakes. Two of my cars are classics with 4 drums. It makes for keeping the cars that would probably never be fixed an exciting drive.
2. People who tailgate. Especially when I’m in the fast lane already going 10 mph over the speed limit!
3. People who talk on cell phones. Maybe no statistical evidence that they cause more accidents but seems every time I have a close call, that person is on a phone.
4. People who have to pull to the left to turn right and vice versa.
5. People who race up to a stop so you don’t know if they will run the light/stop sign or not.
6. People who have been busted for drunk driving before and still do it (police should be able to shoot both the kneecaps on sight – maybe experiencing severe pain, suffering and inconvenience will give them the idea of what pain they put people in when they kill their loved one).
7. People who don’t realize a freeway entry ramp is for acceleration.
8. People who wait until they are on their exit or turn before moving toward that exit or turn.

The last time we drove through the Chicago area, we noticed that drivers accelerating down entrance or exit ramps would jam on the brakes and come to a complete stop before proceeding to try and merge with the traffic flow! People who will fly up and tailgate you for a second, while Im allready doing 10 over the limit in the right lane, then aggressively pass you cut in front slam on their brakes to make quick right turn. I call this the Memphis special, because it only seems to happen here: A driver forgets they need to be in the right lane to exit (probably because talking on cell phone), and comes to a COMPLETE stop in the left lane until someone lets them into the right lane. The walking antiques who should not have the driving privelidge because they no longer have re-action time.
the antiques who drive thru a store and yse the same tired excuse.I thought it was the brake!!!
The teen age girls who drive extremely reckless and think by showing the officer some skin, they wont be ticketed.

Ohio(Northeastern)

People who don’t pay attention(zombie drivers) are the worst. They will not use a turn signal, never keep same speed(on highways and otherwise), cut people off, run you off the road, create accidents and near accidents, and it seems the only time they pay attention is when you pass them, then they act like they’re at the drag strip. Also, there’s a 1 in 2 chance they’re on a cell phone. These are the people who make most accidents, not snow or ice.
I’ve had my license only a year(I’m 16), but I have already been run off the road(with my permit and with my driving school instructor!), and have seen plenty of bad driving to boot. Right now it seems I-77 is a magnet for bad driving, between S.R. 30 and I-76.
Anyway, this annoys me more than anything, but people who can’t drive “like they used to” should stay at home or get somebody to drive them.

hey Cap’n Jon, I don’t know if anybody thinks it means stop, but they probably never learned the art of merging. it also doesn’t help if they’re scared of merging.

1) Left lane hogs driving slowly in Colorado, where we have two laws against the behavior.
2) Semis on ice when they have no understanding of what can happen and prove this by their reluctance to change their dry road tactics.
3)State cops who “troll” by driving 15mph under the limit in the left lane and won’t move over for a string of vehicles behind them.

Many good comments, but people like Sean who complain about people tailgating you in the fast lane even when you are doing 10 mph over? I don’t care how fast you are going, get to the right most lane as traffic permits. And it was clearly available to you because you said the guy passed you on the right. You are the problem if you are getting passed on the right.

1) People that have to slow down in traffic to talk on a cell phone.
2) People who tail gate and flash lights when I am in the fast lane doing 75mph. Pass me on the right dude. I ain’t moving.
3) Biggest traffic hazard out there. People who dart in and out of the car pool lanes illegally. Numerous accidents in So. Calif. cause by this tactic.

My take on cell phone use. If the motor is running. the cell phone is disabled.

The best yet thou is on a four lane hwy where the exit is left, in rush hour the idiot does not get in the left lane till the very end (so they can slip in) so the idiot slows down to about 25mph to get in the gap.

March 27, 2007 at 12:54 pm
(34) Brian says:

Turning on your left signal in the left lane is asking the driver ahead to move out of the way, at least I saw it that way when I was in Europe. Much more friendly than flashing your high-beams.

I wish manufacturers would put a dashboard indicator for when your fogs are on. I’ve accidentally had mine on a couple of times and its hard to notice the difference until it gets really dark.

I have mostly the same peeves as everyone else, but I’ll another couple:

People who don’t think ahead. If your turn is coming up, make sure you are in the correct lane.

Also people who don’t know how to use double-turn lanes properly. If you are in the inside turn lane, turn to the inside lane otherwise you’ll cut off the cars beside you. I actually had one guy swing from the inside to the outside lane and then give me the finger when I leaned on the horn to warn him he was about to run me into the curb. Worse yet is people who try to take the inside lane and then rush to the outside lane so they won’t miss their next turn (see not planning ahead).

March 27, 2007 at 1:03 pm
(35) Sean says:

Justin, read it again. I said I was in the right lane and didnt say that they passed me on the right, or left for that matter. They are passing on the left and cutting back in front of me in the RIGHT lane. The roads Im talking about they would have to be on the sidewalk to pass me on the right.

(37) Guy Manly says:

I think I could write a novel on my opinions about this. I imagine most people could. Best thing to consider, imho, is that we live in a society of different people that have points of view and thoughts about driving that in no way resemble yours or mine. If you approach every drive expecting bad behavior from others, you’ll never be disappointed and your stress level will be better managed. Adopt the psyche to never allow someones elses bad habits inspire bad habits from you… and be proud of being capable of that.

My biggest complaint (in large cities)is tailgating. Not someone tailgating me, but tailgating en masse. Makes it hard to change lanes and in general do the things you need to do to get from pt A to pt B. Many tailgaters in the lane next to you will tailgate *harder* if you turn on your signal to switch lanes, blocking your path to exits. Most people are just trying to get somewhere, if they need to switch lanes, let ‘em. 2 second following distances from everyone and I bet we’d all have fewer issues with the roadways.

Mike from Chitown: I’m convinced most of the litter is from people throwing trash in the bed of their pickup, it’ll never blow out of there!

Top 10 pet peeves:
1. Tailgating at high speed
2. Cellphones, cellphones
3. No headlights on when raining [that's against the law in Illinois]
4. Slow drivers in the left lane
5. Not using at all turn signals
6. Using turn signals at the last minute
7. Cutting you off when there is no one behind you whatsoever
8. Failure to pull out in traffic unless there is at least a 1/2 mile opening
9. Ignoring traffic signals – in Chicago the red light serves as a left hand turn signal. 3,4,5 or more turn left after the light is completely red
10. The Tri-State Tollway where the posted speed is 55 but you better do 85 or you will be rammed from the back by either cars or trucks!

(43) wollo says:

People who have no idea how long it will take to bring their vehicle to an emergency stop. There are too many tailgaters who at freeway speeds travel 10 to 15 feet behind me. That is one reason why I see so many accidents where two, three, or more vehicles are piled up.

People who ride your tail like they are in nascar. When they do pass you there are another car right in front of them or they take a turn right after they pass you. What about when the rode are cover with ice and they are on your tail and you can stop or slide at anytime.

(45) Jacob says:

Where to start?

In CA Bay Area, our carpool lanes are open, not like in LA area, so people abuse it all the time, especially to pass people on the left. Though I did see someone get pulled over for it once, was a rather nice sight.

The thing that enrages me to no end is when you put on a turn signal to change lanes, and the person to that side speeds up, just so you can’t pull in front of them.

Also, people who don’t know how to react when a police car or fire truck has its siren on! It’s just shameful when people don’t pull over.

Of course, then there’s the people who follow their GPS like it replaces watching the road, ignoring the fact there are actually OTHER cars next to them…

(50) Aaron says:

1. Tailgating. Unless the person is going under the speed limit, there should be no reason why this is happening. Even then you should just move into the next lane and pass. THERE IS A SOLID MASS IN FRONT OF YOU; YOU CANNOT PASS THROUGH IT. KNOCK IT OFF.

2. People that race ahead of you, cutting you off simply to take the nearest off-ramp or turn into a parking lot, driveway, etc. You couldn’t have waited the extra 15 seconds it would have taken to be reasonable and stay behind me?

3. Trucks and SUV’s that always drive with their brights on. I know that Halogen headlights are inherently bright, but I can also tell the difference when the entire surrounding area is illuminated instead of just the road. On this note, the foglamp annoyance pisses me off too. THEY ARE CALLED FOGLAMPS FOR A REASON.

4. People that drive with their headlights off at night/at dusk. Are you that ****ing lazy that you cannot turn the dial? Most modern cars come with automatic settings to prevent you from having to push anything, but even still you would think that the road being darker than normal would clue most people in.

5. People who don’t follow proper merging etiquitte. Do you think that because the guy that is merging wants to get in front of you, that it will prevent you from getting where you want to go? Not on your life. If people would let others merge, traffic would flow THAT much faster.

6. When people give you “The Look”. Yeah, you know what i’m talking about. The, “I can’t beat you up right now so I am going to mean mug the people around me from behind the wheel”. Grow up.

7. When people don’t signal, OR when people actually DO signal and everyone around them are oblivious to the fact that someone wants to merge over. I can’t decide which one pisses me off the most!

8. This goes back to the turn signal thing. I friggin’ HATE when people move into a lane as fast as they possibly can, and figure because they flashed their blinker ONCE while ALREADY HALFWAY INTO THE LANE that it validates their obscenely rude behavior. Far from it.

I could go on, but i’m sure you guys get the point and totally agree with me on at least a couple of these. I say, if we all just do our part and be observant and courteous that things will be much better at least in our individual respective worlds. Remember, driving is a PRIVILEGE, not a RIGHT.

(51) CDN_Merlin says:

Ottawa, Ontario

1)Drivers using the fast lane for driving below the speed limit.
2)Driving up a hill in traffic times and not pushing the gas pedal more so you keep the same speed hence causing traffic jams.
3)People not signaling before they turn but during.
4)Improper headlight positioning. Having them point up and into my mirrors.
5)Changing lanes into yours when there is no room for you to do so.
6)People who are so nervous they shouldn’t drive.

March 28, 2007 at 8:57 am
(52) GoBucks says:

1. People who sit at stop signs until everybody stops before they think about going. Just stop, wait a second then go. There’s no need to wait for everybody else to stop.

2. People at stop signs who don’t know what right of way is, or are unable to apply right of way rules to the situation.

3.Cell phones. If you must talk, at least stick to the right lane and set cruise control. If on city streets, don’t talk on phone.

4. Trucks passing one another on freeways, these people should be jailed for holding everybody up. Why can’t semi-trailers have govenors set at 65 and they all go the same speed….in the right lane only.

5. People that have the inability to park in the middle of one parking spot. If you seriously aren’t able to keep your car centered between the lines then you shouldn’t be driving.

6. people who drive in the left lane and go the same speed as the people in the right lane. Just get behind the guy in the right lane, and get out of my way.

7. People who don’t pull over for emergency vehicles. Don’t just stop in the middle of the road, get the heck out of the way.

8. People who go thru drive thrus and order food for 4+ people. Go in and save everybody else the time.

9. People who speed up purposely so you can’t merge WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR SIGNAL ON. We all share the roads, lets not act like 2 year olds.

10. People who drive with their high beams on.

In addition to all the issues mentioned above I have a new one: Drivers that have their rear fog lights on in clear weather.
Mostly Jaguars and Audis have this issue. I don’t know if the rear fog lights come automatically with the fronts, but in Porsches and Mercedes the fronts come first and the rears come after a second click on the switch, but those drivers don’t know and if you are driving in traffic behind them is extremely annoying!

(56) Aaron Gold - Cars Guide says:

Manolo — I happen to agree with this one — I think the problem is that most US and Canadian drivers don’t know what rear fog lights are. I just pointed them out to a friend on his Porsche Boxster. I guess he thought both detents were front fog lights… go figure. Saab, Mercedes, Audi and Porsche fit them to their US-spec cars; we don’t need them and I really wish they wouldn’t.

(58) Aaron Gold - Cars Guide says:

BTW, I have to add in that I disagree with the people who think that driving 10 over the limit in the left lane is enough. Not sure why people seem to think that a) it’s OK for them to speed, b) it’s OK for them to decide how much other people can speed, and c) the “slower traffic keep right” law doesn’t apply to them.

If I’m driving 80 MPH (not that I would ever do that!) in the left lane and someone’s coming up behind me, I pass whoever I’ve got to pass and get the heck out of the way. I leave enforcing the speed limits to the trained professionals.

March 28, 2007 at 12:44 pm
(59) Eric says:

Drivers who feel the need to regulate the drivers behind them. Tapping brakes or slowing down intentionally regardless of the speed. If the person behind you wants to speed then let them. This reduces road rage and potential accidents. Tapping brakes or slowing down when someone has tailgated you induces panic which chain reacts to everyone behind causing congestion. This was explained to me when I received a traffic warning by an officer for doing just that. Even if your speeding already and someone tailgates, let them go and let the police catch the speeders. The officer gave me this motto,”I’d rather be second in line than first on the gurney”.

(60) JAG says:

My biggest peeve: When I make a lane change, I always use my turn signal. Very often (more often than not, actually), an idiot in the lane I’m attempting to merge into speeds up quickly, attempting to close the gap. I move in anyway, which often results in honking, flashing lights, the finger, wild gesticulating, screaming or combinations of these. I’ve often thought that I should give up and NOT use my blinker…

March 28, 2007 at 1:53 pm
(61) JAG says:

Aaron: I disagree with you. We do need fog lights in the US. I live in a mountains where visibility is often limited, either via fog or snow. The rear fog light is particularly helpful. My parents live in California’s central valley where it is often very, very foggy. The problem is education. Car sales people should educate people about this helpful/valuable feature, i.e., when and when not to use them.

People who stop in the middle of the street to pick someone up, or drop someone off. Even though they see you coming in the rear view mirror, they have to finish up that conversation they were having or whatever. Then they have the audacity to get mad if you blow the horn. Just pull into a park in the first place. If there is no place to park, take care of your business and let the rest of the world get to theirs.

Thanks Justin. You make a very GOOD point regarding people in the left lane who will not move over. Apparently Jim B, whose comments followed yours does not understand what an idiotic stance he’s taking by saying “pass me on the right dude, I ain’t movin.” DUDE. Nobody uses DUDE anymore. The rule’s of the road dictate that you move over for faster moving traffic. It doesn’t matter if you are doing 75 or 55, if there is someone who needs to go faster than you, and you are in the fast lane, please just move it.

Once I even saw broadcast on the news a clip of a cameraman taping through the windshield during near whiteout conditions while driving the vehicle. I realize that he is a professional but I’m sure so was the woman I saw putting on lipstick at 60 miles an hour.

*I have to agree with Jay [Cols, Ohio] People do NOT know how to drive in the rain…or any kind of weather for that matter. I see cars all the time getting on to the freeway and supposed to be merging but don’t, they just keep driving – eventually being dam-near ran off the side of the road. Are they aware they are next to a semi??? CLUELESS
* Braking for no reason – I do not get it. I want to ask them WTF? Do you see something that I don’t see why why why do you need to apply the brake?
* cell phones and food > really do you not have time to pull over and do either? If you don’t practice BEFORE actually driving and eating.
** I saved the BIGGEST peave of mine for last – -I have actually called the police with license plate #’s on these: Here in Columbus I see people all the time with kids bouncing around in the back no seat belt or the parents in the back seat with the infant on their lap feeding/ burping it etc. Don’t they realize that if they have to come to an emergency stop whats going to happen to those poor babies – straight out the front window. They are IDIOTS.
Thanks – it felt good to vent:)

One: Funny that so many people list hating ‘tailgaters’ in the fast lane AND list ’slow traffic on right’ yet NEVER consider themselves to be slow. If someone is on your butt (even if you are going 10 ‘over’) you need to MOVE (if sane to do so).

Two: Bluetooth is a godsend. If you can afford a cell-phone, you can afford bluetooth!

I have a lot of peeves, but my single biggest peeve are those drivers who think they own the far left lane. The Left lane is supposed to be a PASSING lane, *NOT* a DRIVING lane. You should never just sit and cruise in that lane, no matter how much over or under the speed limit you think you are justified in doing. Stay to the FREAKING RIGHT!! It’s about driver courtesy. If you would allow people to pass in the passing lane, where they are LEGALLY supposed to, rather than take the idiotic “**** you, I’m not moving” approach, they would be less likely to CUT YOU OFF when they do. How would you like it if someone sat in front of you doing 10mph less than you in the passing lane when you are in a hurry to get somewhere?

(76) irloyal says:

1- Way too many people think it is the “FAST LANE”. These people do not deserve a drivers liscense. The left lane is for overtaking. I don’t care if you are going the speedlimit or 50 MPH over. YOU DO NOT RIDE IN THE LEFT LANE.
2 – MERGE IDIOTS. As a rule, you are to yeild to merging traffic when you are on the expressway. Not speed up and cut them off, but adjust speed and position to allow entry to the road.
3 – Stupid Truck Drivers. There must be a shortage of drivers, because fully 50% of them drive with no brains. They remain glued in the left lane, do not signal lane changes, tailgate…..the list goes on.

Solve these three problems and we’ll reduce traffic problems by a significant amount. My solution: Make it difficult to obtain and keep a drivers liscense. Charge $500 or $1000 to obtain your intital drivers liscense. Require a written exam and mastery at the 80% level every three years. Require a drivers test every 6 years and charge $100 for the test. If it was harder to obtain a drivers liscense and the liscense actually required you to be a trained driver, accident and insurance rates would go down.

2.People that slow down on the freeway before exiting even though they have plenty of room on the off ramp.
3.People that pull onto the freeway at less than freeway speed, forcing everyone else to hit the brakes.
4.All tailgaiters!
5.People that don’t want to wait in the long line exiting the freeway so they wait till the last minute to pull over only to find there is no room for them to do so. They then have to stop, forcing everyone behind them to stop also. Sometimes they even force the whole freeway to stop.

I agree with everything I’ve read so far.I could add more bad driver experiences with you
but, the real problem here is nobody seems to care.I sent countless emails to Steve Levy the County Executive and was pacified with lies passed on to me through his secretary.
The real problems here are much larger then one wants to admit. The key element here
is the Legislature and the police.First let me start with the Legislature, they receive the
complaints from the public who elected them to office. It’s their duty to then do something
to help or correct the problem. The police are another issue.I have been asking many the
same question for 3 years and they all have a different answer. The question was,”what
can we do to slow down the animals on the road?” Here are just a few answers.
1) We are too busy.
2) We are to busy fighting crime.
3) We don’t have time.
4) There is nothing you can do.
5) Call 911
6) Write your Legislator.
7) Steve Levy don’t care.

Everybody seems to have an answer but not the right one.I have a solution to this
mess.Raise the fines right? People never forget when you hurt them in their pocket.
They raise the cigarette taxes, alcohol, bridges, gasoline etc. This is why there is
road rage.Safe drivers have had enough with the little punks on the road with their
loud stereos blasting driving as fast as they possibly can with no regard for safety.
This is why the insurance rates are high and the gas is being used faster then
it could be delivered. I am an advocate for this issue.I don’t just talk about it I’ve been
trying to do something everyday to correct the wrongs in the world to the point I’ve
got myself an ulcer. But make no mistake about it,I will not quit.

As with everyone else my biggest pet peeve is anyone talking on a cell phone (which is against the law here in NY, but I have never seen anyone pulled over because of this – where are the police when you need them!)Also anyone that is doing something other than keeping their eyes on the road- that would include eating, putting on makeup, reading or looking at their laptop! Another thing is people who drive 5 – 10 miles BELOW the speed limit- they are oblivious to the speed limit signs- and need their eye sight checked. Areas of construction on the highways where there are signs and big blinking arrows that announce that the traffic is closed in the left or right lane ahead (Ususally miles in advance) and that person who speeds up and tries to pull in the front of the line while everyone else has merged prior.

(84) Warlock says:

Hey Joe A

I think you are missing few key points.
1. Those that feel a need to speed will do so regardless of how great the penalty is.
2. It isn’t just young punks speeding, you will find men and women from all age groups and walks of life that speed. Heck I’ve even seen countless police cruisers speeding along with the rest of traffic, so the speeding demographic is larger than you appear to realize.
3. Over the last decade, our vehicles have become faster, safer and more reliable than ever before, and yet the speed limits have changed little. I think this is because of the built in income stream that low speeding limits can generate. I personally think the speed limits should all be raised.
4. Speed is not the only factor affecting road safety. I think lane hogs, multitasking, driving against the flow of traffic and lack of experience are bigger issues.

My solution to all of this is much more comprehensive driver training, tougher driving tests, more reasonable speed limits, and more comprehensive and uniform enforcement of *all* the traffic laws, not just for speeding.

Being that we are on the subject,I’d like to mention what happened to me last night.
I was coming home from Farmingdale heading back to Smithtown with my friend.
I was traveling south on the Sagtikos Pkwy at 4:30 am.
Because you have to look in the mirror 95% of the time(at least I do),I could see
one vehicle travel well over a 100 mph with another vehicle on his bumper in the left lane.
My gut feeling was to more right ever so slightly.Had I not looked in the mirror and allowed
the room needed for this moron(who thought he was good but that’s because I’m a very defensive driver and the outcome could have been tragic for both of us.)I wish I had
not moved, then maybe he would have died. And by the way, these happened to be very young drivers in this case (little punks.)

My Top 5:

1. Drivers who run stop signs or illegally turn left on red – There are a bunch of scary drivers in my area(MD).

2. People who talk on cell phones and poorly make difficult turns or back out of parking spaces into traffic.

3. Drivers who tailgate or otherwise harass others, without giving them time to safely move out of the way(as if they expect you to make the same dangerous cut-offs of other drivers that they would make).

4. People who block the passing lane by driving slow or matching the speed of the car next to them.

5. People who litter from their cars. Basically, selfish people tend to be more dangerous to others in alot of areas.

Self-centered rudness: This morning I was driving on a 4 lane undivided surface-road with two lanes going in my direction which were getting ready to merge into one lane (right merging into the left). I was in the left lane and there was NOBODY behind me. Nevertheless, someone came cruising down the right lane and without signalling tried to force their way in between me and the car in front of me. I refused to yield to the rudeness for a moment or two, but as the other driver was clearly willing to ram my car, I backed off and she managed to wedge herself in. I politely congratulated her on her excellent work. Good job! (I mean, what was the %$#@ point!?!)

By the way, I’m more than happy to let people merge in front of me if they are reasonable and fair about it.

People who refuse to get out of the left lane when they are holding up faster traffic!!!! People like the Jim B. here who insists that he doesn’t need to get out of the left lane because he is already driving 10 mph over the speed limit. I’ve driven in about 20 different nations, and one thing that is a universal driving courtesy (especially in Europe) is that slower drivers get out of the left lane when faster traffic is coming up on them. Aericans apparently have no courtesy. In Germany, even if you’re driving 120 mph in the left lane YOU MUST get out of it to let the guy driving 140 mph behind you through. It’s the law over there. I love that country!
