This week I got an email urging me (and a few dozen other recipients) not to buy gasoline on May 15th. Though the idea of a gas boycott is tempting, these one-day boycotts -- which crop up every year -- don't seem to work (David Emery, About.com's Guide to Urban Legends, explains why here).
Whether or not you believe that price gouging is part of the problem -- and I'm a believer -- it's true that gasoline, like other commodities, is subject to the law of supply and demand. The best way to fight high prices is to reduce demand, and the most effective way to do that is to buy a) a smaller car (automakers are designing small cars with more and more interior space; three of my favorites are the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa and Nissan Sentra), b) a super-efficient hybrid like the Toyota Prius or Honda Civic Hybrid, or c) an alternative-fuel car such as the Honda Civic GX.
Unfortunately, a new car isn't a financial possibility for everyone, but there are still lots of steps you can take: Keep your tires properly inflated, consolidate your errands into fewer trips, and slow down a bit on the open road. (I have a full list of fuel-saving tips here.) If everyone in the country followed these steps and dropped their average fuel consumption by just 2-3 miles per gallon, we'd make a real dent in demand for gasoline -- and save a whole lot of money, to boot. -- Aaron Gold

While it’s true gas prices are subject to supply and demands, I think too speculators are feeding the frenzy. I mean if some worker drop a wrench off a platform, they’re out there telling everyone there’s an oil shortage coming next week.
So, looks that everyone is happy with gas prices. We know that this is an global problem, but if we Canadians agree, that we dont buy gas in the month of June at SHELL gas stations, in July at PETROCANADA, in August at ESSO and in September at HUSKY in October again SHELL and so on. Maybe they will start to compete between themselwes. To many excuses, but prices are going up in unison. We can stop those practices. They coralled the market and now we dont have any more private gas stations. Stand up people before it is to late. We can beat them.
These oil companys have found yet another cash cow. The question is when will we get smart and get rid of these fuel guzzling cars and trucks. 1 day boycotts won’t work, they have BILLIONS. Maybe a week or two, and even then its not long range enough. Oh yea I opened the paper this morning to see a sale on 2007 trucks with a FREE HEMI UP GRADE. Just what we need to help with the high oil prices or should I say what they need. A friend and I found a date book and we looked up when we started to drive (1969 .35 cents per gal.) Ethenal was used in the quote gas shortage of 70s why has it taken so long to start using it again, and why can’t it be used in our normal cars now. If you did by a car that could use E85 where oh where do you find it. Maybe the powers to be haven’t yet found a way to rip us off with our own home grown corn. Heck they use it in 800hp IRL cars, the stuff has more octain then the crap we buy now. And then we could still buy a HEMI.
E85 Fuel is just another way to screw the consumer. I read an article the other day that says computer models show Corn based fuels will actually INCREASE smog. It may extend miles per gallon but at the cost of lung disease?
Also, this fuel will cost us in many other ways. Already, some farmers are converting wheat and other fields to corn for more profit. That will cause a shortage in hundreds of things we need for food. Ok, so we get 50 miles per gallon instead of 15. We just saved $200/month on our fuel bill but it cost us $500/month more on our food bill!!
Every article I read or hear on E85 indicate it DOES NOT increase mpg on vehicles, but rather you get less. The cost at the pump is supposed to offset this drop in mpg compared to regular gas. My car with a V8 (rated 17/23) gets much more mpg than my crossover SUV with a V6 (rated 17/25). Actual highway mpg on the car is close to 27 and with the crossover close to 20. Guess what I drive on the highway.
Mike J. E85 yeilds LESS milage then gas, but is much cleaner then gasoline. Its Grain Alcohol. It also has more octain. And we grow the stuff in every farm in America. We ship corn out to every starving nation by the mega tons. it may increase food ever so slightly but come on, the air we breath and the price were going pay for gas would more then offset a penny a pound for beef. What I want to know is what keeps us from running it our cars right now. We ran it in the 70s. The only thing I can think of is the computer (ECU) settings. Exhaust temp readings etc. or maybe the rubber
o-rings used. alcohol will swell buline rubber. Anybody know for sure.
Does this gas boycot include diesel?
Or can I go out and fill up my 5.9 Cummins Ram’s 26 gallon tank on the 15th? *insert Tim Allen grunt sound*
This boycot will not help. If nobody shows up at the stations for one day, they will just have record sales (and nutty traffic) at the pump on the next day (because everyone will be on empty). Supply and demand. You (and your 10,000+ closest friends) need to actually change your lifestyle and use [SIGNIFICANTLY] less fuel in order to make an impact. But they make such a rediculous profit anyway, so it STILL won’t help. And even if we use less, and we ding their profits (those poor oil executives), they will probably increase the price per gallon just to make up for it. It’s a no-win situation.
SOLUTION: Ride your bike.
I heard a story on NPR this past weekend about the possibile ramifications of ethanol production in Mexico — since fuel is more profitable than food, they are saying that production of ethanol could lead to higher food prices, not a good thing in a country where so many are so poor. Mexico, incidentally, was the #2 exporter of oil to the United States in February (Canada was #1, Saudi Arabia was #3).
3 alternative solutions:
1. move to Canada
2. move to Mexico
3. move to Saudi Arabia
MEXICO???? do they have cars. I agree know boycott will help. BUT MEXICO! Im sorry did you say MEXICO. LETS see how many cars are there in mexico compared to the USA. SUPPLY AND DEMAND. We polute 100 times as much and use at least that much more fuel. I think the food increase if any will be short term at best.
Kudos to Aaron, for correctly pointing out how gas prices are mostly a function of supply and demand. If you look at places like China and India and see the numbers of cars they are adding to their streets each year, global demand is going up up up. It’s almost scary.
If you want to cut back on gas use stop by the store on your way home from work. Walk to church. Ride a bicycle on short trips [Better for your health] Try to cut your gas use by 5 to 10%.If 10% of the people did this just think how much money it would save yoy & how much it would hurt gas sales over all
Anybody remember the Volvo concept about a year ago that was a 1 or 2 passenger car? why aren’t they making that thing? would it be too good on gas or what?
Also, Aaron what you said about supply and demand is true, and China and India can grow and develop a lot more yet, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see $5 a gallon gas average in 5-10 years(or above that even).
BTW, good idea, Bill S.
if everyone did that, we wouldn’t have the obesity problem that we do now. the sad thing is, we used to do that in the first half of the 1900’s. I guess Americans all got lazy or busy, one of the two
Greg, yep, I said Mexico.
Go here for a look at where the vast majority of our imported oil actually comes from.
A boycott is a long-term thing — you stop purchasing the product until you get the desired change. Like Aaron notes, if enough people use less gasoline, the price will drop, but a one-day “boycott” won’t do the trick.
I realize this is a car column so perhaps Aaron can be forgiven for failing to mention them, but there are other options besides buying more efficient cars. May 15 falls right on U.S. Bike to Work Week, which is something probably most people can participate in if they tried. In a few areas, public transportation is also an option to help in a boycott. May is also Motorcycle Awareness Month, suggesting another way to reduce gasoline consumption. A few lucky souls are even able to walk to work or even telecommute.
Mexico is a large exporter, but their production is in steep decline in spite of enhanced recovery techniques.
May is Motorcycle Awareness Month; May 15 falls on National Bike to Work Week. Both of these suggest a couple of other ways to *permanently* reduce your weekly payout to terrorists and anti-U.S. governments.
Another variation on the boycott is to target a single oil company long term until they’re forced to lower their price, forcing others to drop prices too. Of course there are holes in that logic (Exxon is rich enough to easily withstand a lengthy boycott), but it would be nice to stick to ‘em for once. Like others have said, the answer is less consumption.
I don’t care if Mexico gives us 50% or 1% of our oil. The Idea is to use less oil, period. So what we do use because of supply and demand won’t go to $5.00 per gal. I hope. If it dose I’ll be poor and wont be able to pay for my families food. Starting to use alternitive fuels will help. Oh by the way I ride my motorcycle when ever possible and I am putting my 1990 honda civic SI (30mpg)back on the road so I can be one of the many I hope will help save fuel. My jeep wrangler will have to be used for winter. Not using Ethanol because food prices in Mexico may rise is Bull! I’ll ask again what keeps cars prior 2007 bio fuel cars from running Ethanol. We can thank are car companys for NOT offering high milage cars long before this. and offering gas guzzling HEMI motors at no extra charge. I love fast cars I’m from the big block 70s and having one of those in your garage for a weekend drive won’t hurt. Driving 60 or more miles a day to work in a Ford Expedition at 11mpg. will.
How about making our highways and roads more efficient? Most of us spend about 50% of time stuck in traffic jams, traffic lights or stop signs.
Thats a good idea, but that takes up more land and I don’t think alot of us want to give up any more. Alot of this is because people want to live in the suburbs and are driving hrs. to work. And the back ups are caused by drivers switching back in forth in lanes trying to get ahead but causing chain reaction slow downs
Here’s an excerpt from Bloomberg on 5-2-07. Just today I saw gas jump $0.25 cents, just one day after this article. Now Big Oil is caught in their lie….to the gallows!!!
Oil Falls on Signs Supplies Rose, Refiners Bolstered Output
By Mark Shenk
May 2 (Bloomberg) — Crude oil fell on speculation that an Energy Department report will show U.S. inventories climbed last week as refiners increased fuel output.
That I can belive. Oil companys are having record profits Hmmmmmm. There laughing all the way to the bank. If we cut oil consumption by about 20% wonder what the price would drop too. But it would need to be permanent. Our Goverment needs to get involved to mandate fuel efficient cars and alternetive fuels, Fuels that are avalible NOW. We know it won’t happen and if they did it will be for political gain only. Rep. or Dem makes no difference. Heck Ethanol is Alcohol they used it back when they were making moonshine.
Boycott, blaaaaa. Fritz is correct. Short tern you will not change a thing. Why re-invent the wheel. Ethanol is not the answer. Nether is hydrogen; Diesel cars already get up to the mid 40-mpg’s. Invest a little in this technology and you could easily get close to 60. Even my Cummins gets 21+ on the hwy, and close to 18 city.
I have a friend who is in the business and he tells me we have plenty of oil in this country to last a long long time. Problem is getting to it. The days of cheap gas is over and when it become cost effective for the oil companies to invest in the technology to get the rest of the oil out, they will, but we will pay dearly for it. As long as speculators are driving the prices at the pumps and gas goes up by dimes and down by pennies because someone hiccups we are screwed. Whatever happened to the days when you could count on the price of a gallon of gas to remain constant. Politicans and big business don’t help us. They got theirs and they could less about the rest of us.
The supply -vs- demand argument would hold but for the existence of OPEC. An organization whose sole existense is based on collusion and manipulating supply. The oil companies are complicit as their profit formulas are based on a percentage over crude, refining and delivery.
There is no free market at work here and it is naive to beleive otherwise.
Guess what? Smaller more fuel efficient cars lead to many more miles driven – and more fuel consumtion. Also, the gas price problem has been caused by too few refineries, not too little oil. Making things worse is the Congress mandated blends that change from season to season and vary from region to region.
Build some new refineries, and make the same blend everywhere and you’ll reduce cost by 30%.
I think the best way the memorial weekend nobody should venture pass one tank of gasoline and one tank back home.so all sporting events you will not go too that is more than one tank there. and one tank back.or just a home. and some states there are talk about raising the fees for campaign .so the best thing is to stay home or very close to home.and get and get to know your neighbors and have a block party instead. and of course getting the illegal people that are driving without license off the road to .
Sorry, I don’t buy the “supply and demand” thing. Demand is more or less constant, and hey, so is supply. The price moves much more on speculation about future shortages than it does on anything that’s really happening.
A one-day boycott is just plain dumb, like someone else said, they’ll just sell more the next day. You might as well sign a petition saying “I want cheap gas” for all the good it’ll do.
Mike, I’d like to see your rationale for the statement that people with smaller, more fuel-efficient cars are going to drive them more, so much so that they’ll end up using more gas than a less fuel-efficient car. That sounds downright silly to me.
In 1976 I was in the bicycle industry but switched to the MOPED industry because of the gasoline shortage (recall the shortages and long lines at gas stations)! I believed that Americans would use mopeds as they did in foreign countries! Was I mistaken!
MOPEDS were a flop! Even the small motorcycles were a flop. Americans want a four door sedan, minivan or SUV.
Does anybody know if a rear wheel drive car gets better mileage than a front wheel vehicle? If so then maybe we need more rear wheel drive vehicles!
Another gas boycott?? Has one ever worked? Will one ever work? Just sit back folks while the oil companies fix prices, make lame excuses and count the profits. It’s legalized racketeering and we are the victims.
Gas boycott? I think we would have more success pushing a piece of rope up a hill!
our govorment needs to step in to regulat oil &gas like thay do with our utilites its all gouging all the way our presadent is a oil man too.
Where I live the electricity company has just asked the government to increase it’s rates due to diminished demand. Looks like efficiency is the answer as long as we don’t all do it.
The only thing that will correct this is the inflation and global recession the obscene profits being taken will invariably lead us into.
Everyone complains about the gas companies, but no one wants a new refinery in their backyard. Blame the car companies, but when they offer a small car with good mileage nobody buys them. Look around on your drive to work and see how many people are driving Expeditions or Tahoes, with one person in the truck. The real problem is our own bad habits.
Why dont we just invent a type on engine that runs off a gas that is man produced that burns cleanly and its doesnt have to get great gas milage just be extremly cheap. If you have a engine that gets 12 miles to the gallon on some kind of man made fuel that costs only 75 cents a gallon then why not attempt to create that.
Here’s my rant on the subject.
Build refineries. If the oil companies won’t do it have the government do it. Buy American! If we continue to buy stuff from countries like china that continue to compete with us for oil on the world market(not to mention the military buildup they are undergoing) the demand will continue to meet supply and we continue to get ripped off by speculators.
Use economy cars, motorcycles, and carpooling for mindless commuting.
James — We already have an engine like that — it’s called the diesel.
Aaron, maybe you should elaborate on your assertion that “price gouging” is going on? Maybe a few facts instead of wild-assed accusations??
Boycotts won’t work. nuff said.
Ethanol may be the answer but not yet. The problems surrounding ethanol use is overwhelming and complex right now. Not enough space or time to dive into that subject.
Emerging nations complicate the price of oil. Oil refinery production plays a large part in this as do the speculators.
Some of you want more government control so you can buy gas cheaper? Sorry, but oil companies are entitled to make a profit. As a percentage of income they are hardly at the top of the list of profitable companies.
c
Chuck –
Glad to elaborate. Oil companies cited the reason for rising profits as rising costs (refinery shutdowns, trouble in the Mid East (despite the fact that most of our oil is imported from Canada, Mexico and Venezuela), etc. Yet they keep setting record profits — not record profits for their companies, or for thier industries, but record profits for any company in the world in recorded history.
Ergo, I think it’s safe to say that the costs can’t be going up *that* much.
In most industries, when costs go up, profits fall (usually before prices rise). The airlines in the post-9/11 era are a great example. What’s the difference? Most people don’t *have* to fly, but most people *do* have to buy oil-based fuels.
I’m sure the issues in the Gulf Coast and the Middle East have affected costs. But if the costs were high enough to justify the price at the pumps, how could the oil companies be posting record profits? This is gouging, plain and simple — and government regulation isn’t going to happen any time soon — our President knows who his friends are, and simple though he may be, he’s not dumb enough to betray them, especially not with just two and a half terms left in office.
Why isn’t Ethanol the answer, not saying its the only one not by far but Its one we know works or at least it did in the 70s. Im sure our under paid farmers would not mind making a few extra dollars. Goverment control is not the answer but our goverment has OUR money and should be helping to make an to make a market that would support alternitive fuels. When will we wake up and stop letting opec the oil companys rip us off. The only reason where not getting oil or ethenol or other alternitive fuels from here is theres not enough money in it to feed the greedy. Lets face it we don’t want goverment involved, they could and would probobly screw things up but face it until they mandated better fuel economy and cleaner emissions in the 80s nothing changed. Now GM is saying they have E85 cars and trucks, but I don’t see service stations with pumps at least not in maryland. Like diesel cars very few owned them because local gas stations did not have pumps. Diesel has come a long way just look at the Audi race cars. and the fuel changes for them to clean them up. But man has the price suffered. Even Corvette is building a Diesel for 2009 and its fast.
Gas prices are getting ridiculus. Soon, nobody will be going anywhere, but to their job, school, or to run any important errand. Bush needs to put a stop to this outragous and unfair cash flow problem that he and his administration has allowed to go on ever since the World Trade Centers were destroyed on 9/11.
I don’t agree that a one day boycott is going to be effective in reducing income to the oil companies. As the other writter indicated, you and all of us will just purchase our gas later in the week. In order for this to happen in a more effective manner, fill up your tank and then don’t purchase any gas for a week. Everyone buy the same day and then go as long as you can without making a purchase. It would be better to car pool and use public transportation so the gas companies feel the real pinch.
Since when has a 10% increase in a price over a MONTH been considered gouging? The prices of ground beef, milk, eggs, chuck steak, salmon, cheeses, soft drinks, Kool-aide, lettuce, cabbage, carrots, etc. fluctate by 50-70% WEEKLY, yet I don’t read daily ill-informed rants about price gouging by grocers.
Has anybody noticed apples in the past couple of years. Apples routinely fluctate between $.33/lb and $3.49/lb DAILY! Where are all the conspiracy theories when apple prices at the local grocer increase by 700% overnight!
Bryan — Apple prices don’t go up and *stay* up, and the world doesn’t run on apples.
Aaron,
Once again you’ve stuck your ignorant neck out into an area you don’t belong. Small companies have small profits. Very large companies have large profits. As a percentage of income the oil business is far down the list of “gougers”. Why aren’t you making silly assertions about tech companies, insurance companies, jewelry companies??? Their profit margins are much higher. But based on earnings to equity they appear to much smaller.
It’s just another opportunity to lash out at Bush isn’t it? What a ridiculous assertion to insinuate that the white house controls gas and oil prices. Just shut up and talk about those little girly cars you and your friends drive. Economic issues seem to evade your small mind.
The only thing simple is your irrational thought processes. Try getting your information from other sources than moveon.org or Barbra Streisand.
Chuck –
Way to drink the Kool-Aid, my man.
Aaron
Greg,
Ethanol may be the answer but many questions remain as to how clean it burns, health issues, cost, supply.
More research is needed before it can be safe.imo
Problems.
Transportation is costly
Pollution?
Less energy
Costly to produce
Farmers need to be subsidized
and importers have tariffs assessed.
Great promise and renewable but right now it’s just not a complete replacement for oil
You also have to remember that pollution mandates weren’t nearly as strict as they are now. So, polluting with Ethanol was perfectly acceptable.
Not a big fan of kool-aid aaron. Just a big fan of facts. Something you and many other “journalists” have abandoned with your mindless agenda.
c
Maybe the idea would be to send a message to the oil companies that the people are noticing the creeping gas prices. Also, Manson, I think the difference between diamonds and oil is simple. I don’t buy diamonds, but I am sure they aren’t purchased, weekly, daily, the case may be. Nor are people utterly dependant on diamonds to function, therefore your point is invalid. By the way, you may seem to come off intelligent, but most people might have noticed that Aaron’s reference was to Jim Jones and following the idiotic inclinations of others. Have a wonderful day.
Somebody on the radio had a better idea. That is to boycott one companies gas stations. That would probably cause them to cut prices. Then we could have low price wars like we did years ago. I would choose those commie owned Citgos 1st.
Citgo is not commie owned. The people of Venezuela own the company. Western nations have taken Venezuela’s natural resources for 400 or so years. Now the big oil companies cry when President Chavez makes them give back what belongs to the People of Venezuela. Long Live The Revolution!
The kool-aid reference did not slip by me Jayjay. O’reilly uses it every night and Jim Jones just happened to be one of my students ;op
I follow no idiotic inclinations. I’m a slave to facts and truth not to mindless assertions that can never be proven. Aaron has made the same remarks in the past and I challenged him to provide proof knowing it does not exist and that he is incapable of backing those assertions. I think it’s also the sewer that journalism has fallen into of late that bothers me.
I have to admit your diamonds to oil comparison flew right over my head? Wha?
Chuck Manson
Jayjay, it’s no use trying to explain things to “Chuck”. He’s going to hear what he wants to hear and read what he wants to read, and if you present him with a reasonable argument — or even state the blatently obvious — he’ll just say you’re a flaming liberal who gets all your opinions from Michael Moore and Barbara Streisand. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to get back to my plans to topple the Bush administration, while cunningly disguising my activities as those of an innocent automotive journalist driving my “girly cars”.
Clever Aaron!
Typical tactic to divert attention from the fact you haven’t answered my question?
That’s OK. There are many of you simple minded “journalists” and I plan on shining the light of truth on as many of you little cockroaches as I can.
BTW-A reasonable arguement would include facts and not conspiracy theories.
TTFN
Don’t buy gas on one day is totally useless. Whoever thought this one up needs to have their brain checked. So I buy gas the day before or the day after, this idea does nothing. Try what i am doing instead, called alternate transportation. Use mass transit, walk, car pool or ride your bike!!! Call it alternate transportation day not don’t buy gas day!!! Also, don’t forget to support your local gas stations by purchasing from inside their stores. As it stands they can’t make any profit from the gas they sell.
Why not buy one of those electric cars from http://www.zapworld.com Some of the used ones I beleive are running around 9 and 10,000 ,and electric schootes you can buy for about 3 or 4 hundred dollars , I,ve had my electric schooter for the past 7 years . Electric cars and schooters could help slow down the GLOBAL WARMING efect. check out http://www.stopglobalwarming.org/ I advocate for this on most of my music web sites like http://www.myspace.com/walter_goulet and http://www.maxpages.com/waltergoulet walter goulet folk singer/song writer
Why not just refuse to drive your car on May 15th. That would ensure that you do not need to fill up a full tank the next day.
I can’t take it…I’ve got to get in on this…I think it’s pretty easy to see who’s cutting Chuck’s pay check or maybe his stock dividends…and bringing in a blowhard like O’reilly hardly lends credibity to any arguement…the fact is, oil companies are recording unprecedented profits at a time when people around the globe(for the most part) are straining under the yoke of oppressive fuel prices…the biggest reason for this, as far as I’m concerned, is the fact that no nuke plants or refineries have been built in 30 years and those infrastructures are old and going off line regularly. I propose that a Windfall Profit Reserve be collected by an independent arm of the government that shall immediately use those funds for expansion of energy infrastructure:1/new refineries 2/ new nuke power plants 3/new CNG outlet infrastructure throught the country, so 50% of stations carry CNG.4/ 1 billion in loans to the auto companies to develop advanced hydrogen technologies that would be 100% forgivable upon success.5/commencement of a comprehensive design for hydrogen fueling nationwide…and many more like that…just think what we could have been done to further the advancement of these technologies had we not used the half trillion dollars for this endless war.
But then how could Haliburton/KBR rebuild the destroyed Iraqi infrastructure and how could you cut into the profits of Mobil/Exxon who Condi used to work for and who bankroll quislings like O’reilly, Hannity, Medved, Prager, Savage and of course Limbaugh!
Aaron, this is getting to be a politcal soap box for some. Aaron, do you know what would keep a pre E85 car from running Ethanol. And I have read this in a couple of comments about Ethanol about riseing food prices and it not burning clean. I would think it would be pretty easy to test Ethanol. There are many other alternitve fuels but it seems to me that this one would be easy to produce. There isn’t enough reason to look into ANY alternitive fuels. REASON: NOT ENOUGH MONEY TO BE MADE. NUFF said.
Hear hear, Greg — there have been plenty of viable alternative fuel and low-emissions technologies available for several years, all of which have had one thing in common: No clear profit path (or increased costs) for the existing oil companies. High fuel prices have already driven up demand for small engines and diesels in Europe and even in Canada; now that gas prices are on the rise here, Americans are finally going to start looking more seriously at alternatives. Note all the commercials from oil companies trying to put a happy face on their activities and show themselves as seeking alternative fuels. I think they’re going to have to scramble like mad — is it possible that their shennanigans may unwittingly lead them to price themselves out of the market? Boy, wouldn’t that be poetic justice.
Aaron. go to http://www.cartalk.com type in E85 on keyword serch. then click on the first address. I think you will find it funny, and interesting specially the one about “why am I hearing so much about Flex fuel cars”. Let me know what you think.
Greg, do you mean this article? I liked it a lot, and it gave me more than a few chuckles. I’ve never been a big E85 fan for numerous reasons, and this article gives me more. One I did not know:
“Using the entire US corn crop to make ethanol would only replace about ten percent of our oil needs today.”
My main issue with ethanol is that there is a much better biofuel out there: biodiesel. Biodiesel does not require engine modifications; E85 does. While E85 lowers MPG, biodiesel does not — and since diesels get better fuel economy anyway, so score another one for biodiesel. Furthermore, note that E85 is 85% ethanol, 15% gasoline. that doesn’t solve our problem. (E100 would.) Biodiesel can be mixed with any amount of dinosaur diesel, but again, BD100 requires no engine modifications to a modern diesel engine. E100 would. (And if you’re gonna modify, might as well modify a diesel to run on vegetable oil; it’s not hard. Dr. Rudolph Diesel, if memory serves me correctly, originally designed his compression-ignition engine to run on peanut oil.)
So why is E85 so popular? Well, it requires little investment on behalf of the automakers, so we can have it right now (even if you can’t buy it in many places). It gives the appearance that the automakers, fuel suppliers and (when they tout E85) lawmakers are doing something meaningful about high oil costs. And since the oil companies already work with ethanol blends, it’s not a far stretch for them to become part of the supply chain. So there is a potential profit path for them. Furthermore, it won’t render their gasoline infrastructure useless, as there’s still a need for gasoline refining in order to make E85.
Still, I think it won’t be long before the American public wakes up to the limitations of E85. Hopefully the emergence of more diesel cars in the US market will get Americans thinking about a truly renewable fuel. Then again, we bought into the PR campaigns against electric vehicles and natural gas vehicles, two perfectly viable solitions with cheap running costs and infrastructures in place… so I won’t hold my breath.
The gas gouging is all part of the plan and the plan is a police state with a few companies controlling us (as they do now). Have a look at some facts on two internet sites and then make an informed decision. On question911.com go to “Downloads” and open some files, or download them – you need some high-speed internet connection though, then check out http://www.patriotsquestion911.com . Oh, and before you sneer and call me a left wing socialist know this about me: I hate both corrupt parties (we will never be allowed to see another party in a debate), I joined the Army is 1966 got my wish and joined the 101st Airborne Division and volunteered as an infantryman to go to Vietnam. I am a conservative and think that Bush is a traitor, as are most of our representatives in both parties. I am not dumb: I had a Top Secret Cripto clearance in my first 6 months in the Army and had to pull strings to get into the infantry. I believe in our countrymen, but not our politicians: our government is too corrupt to fix and we need to do what our forefathers told us to do.
We have no liberties left and most of the public are acting like sheep, but that will change. Have a look at http://www.freedomtofascism.com and you will find some facts that will blind you with anger. Our government still puts people in jail for not paying personal income tax while knowing that the Supreme Court has already ruled that our government does not have the power to make us pay a personal income tax according to the our Constitution: it is unconstitutional! The same court ruled that the 16th Amendment gave our government NO NEW POWERS TO TAX.
Check the facts and know that our government is more like the mafia then a government. I bought the DVD and have already spent $90 giving everyone I know copies of America Freedom to Fascism. You really need to be informed.
Then if after viewing some of the files on both question 911 and patriots question 911 if you still believe that a few Arabs made NORAD stand down for two hours and that somehow the same Arabs put all those bombs in the Twin Towers then you should just go back to burying your head in the sand and hoping that you are not really in the rabbit hole.
Well OK Now Miles ??????? Aaron that artical in car talk.com changed my tune about E85 maybe its time to buy a diesel. Signing off on this discussion its been interesting. Buy the way your articals are always good I read them often. Though I’m not planning on buying a diesel Vette or new Mercedes. I may try a volkswagon I run a service company 45 to 50 thousand a year. or maybe a Hybrid. I’ll keep reading
I agree with AndyS, the boycott won’t work and Andy makes all the sense in the world. Think about it one day without gas WILL cause the gas stations to make more money because people will be rushing to the gas stations. Even though some people might be boycotting, you will see some people at the pumps.
My solution: Get a horse LOL Holla!!!
Why is it, we, the cumsumer have to give up our wishes and wants to bow down to the oil companies. If we sacrifise and cut back, they will just raise the prices to compensate for the differences. Don’t beleive it – try it. The profit is a great important driver to their CEO. With our Government being involved in every aspect of our lives, why not stop this ridiculas profit that the oil companies are taking in. I can not even comprehend a profit of 8-9 BILLION dollars in a quarter. Stop this ridiculas profit increases and bring a control to our gas prices without the exspence of what our country was built on. It is time we stop talking about it and start writing to our Government officials to get off of there as*** and put a control on this.
I do believe a boycott would be a great way for we consumers to fight the higher prices but we all understand that we can’t not buy gas. Not even for just one day. So how about this…
Simple solution.
Pit the refinery companies against themselves and we can make this hurt one company at a time.
We should take this week by week, boycotting a single company. We can still buy gas at other companies but just not the specified company for that week.
It’s fairly simple but if we can get the word out… this will work to get the prices back down.
Keep in mind, there is no shortage of oil. This is pure greed and the big oil companies think we can’t do a thing about it. Lets show them they are wrong!!
I do agree that e-85 ethenol is a waste. If you people that agree that e-85 ethenol had done your research you would’ve learned how damaging it is to human beings, and the economy. e-85 ethenol may be cheap to produce, but since it is made from corn
Corn can be farmed yes, but with todays growing cities and metropolitan areas there will be less space to grow it.
Thus there will be a shortage of corn if it is used to make fuel.
By this time many vehicles may be dependent on the e-85 ethenol. Witht he shortage of corn prices will be driven up and e-85 projects will abandoned because of the greater need for it as food.
Then we go back to the root of the problem, the oil prices.
Oil companies will jump at the oppuritunity to price gouge.
And we’ll be worse off then how we started.
Thank you and Goodnight.
S.
If they used the entire corn crop and it only reduced our oil imports by 10% that might drive the price of fuel down slightly. The price of food would go through the roof, any idea how many food products use corn syrup? E85 has been studied for emissions and it does create more pollution, thats why E85 cars are not sold in states that use California emissions standards. Same goes for diesel, while diesel is actually more efficient instead of less eficient like E85 it still pollutes more than gas. Before the most recent emissions change made the few light diesels that were on the market go away, you still couldnt buy them in the 5 California emissions states.
Short term more refineries would do the most to reduce the price of gas, and more nuclear powerplants would help lower consumption of fossil fuels. The problem again is nobody wants either in their backyard. Long term we need to do serious research into renewable sources. Some have promise but are nowhere close to reality for the mass market.
Aaron…congrats! you’ve done your homework well…E85 is a “feel good” solution that smacks of some inside profits for somebody big in the agri-biz. And why not a diesel Vette, Greg? I believe the r10 Audi turbo diesel has been turning the racing world on its ear this past year! The problem for many with diesels is the black eye this excellent engine got from cold starts, particulate spew and the disastrous cadillac diesel some 20+ yrs ago. All these issues have been mostly resolved…BUT diesel in my opinion is a temporary solution till hydrogen cell tech (so something like it) can finally address issues like foreign oil dependence, global warming, pollution and “big oil” greed.
Why the boycott will have an effect. A one day boycott won’t affect the gas company’s wallet because we still have to buy same gas later in order to get to work. However, it will show that we are mobilizing and we are about to raise hell. These greedy corporate CEOs are traitors who exploit the people of this country.
E85 has roughly 75% of the efficiency of gas. The price of E85 is more than 75% of the price of gas. They plan to either gouge us for E85 or discourage us from alternatives. Sugarbeets and sugarcane are the optimum crops for the production of ethanol but, the “powers that be” contractually prevent farmers from producing anything but sugar from beets. Farmers in Colorado had to auction their farms in the 80’s (only 7 years after the oil embargo of 73) Bottom line: The oil companies have enough of our money to buy any of our politicians. Study J.D. Rockefeller to see how they operate.
To all of you that claim it will not work…well it probably won’t. The point of the exercise, is to let them know that for at least one day a year, we are closing our pocket books to them. I ask just that, everyone be ladies and gentlemen and oblige.
Amber is right…it doesn’t hurt anyone to boycott for one day…but you can bet the political pundits will be talking about it tonight…and that means you’ll be hearing all the anti-big oil gang out there tellin it the way it is, on our behalf…so it’s a good thing.
AMBER! Get to bed it’s after 2:oo AM!!!
In the year 2050, we’ll all look back at the past 150 years and say “Remember when we used Oil for energy?”. HA! That’s how is was back then. Before that was coal. Now everything is electric. Who cares, it’s called progress. It will all change soon enough. If it concerns you, change your ways.
one day boycott isnot enough we should start with exxon mobile for a week & rotate with each brand ithink the store owners would get pretty vocal
Brad Ross and Amber -One Day boycott will not work – agreed. BOYCOTT ONE COMPANY – THIS WOULD WORK. I amazed at how dumb we Americans are. If one does a web search, all these sites will come up “so and so expert says boycotting one company will not work” and we buy it – simple, done. Check out snopes.com for one of these “explanations” as to why something these “experts” have not even tried yet will not work. Its strange, almost as if the oil companies were putting out these sites. NO! And it would be so simple to do – just stop buying gas from one company – simple really – we could all start today. As common Americans (most of us on the way to becoming the bottom part of a two class society) all we have to fight these guys is our sheer numbers. Can you imagine what would happen if millions of people stopped buying Exxon gas? You do not think they would notice that $100s millions are not getting dropped into there bank that day and every day? Snopes says if you do not buy gas from Company A they will just sell it to Company B and “then prices will go up because of increased demand”. This does not make sense and yet people still eat it up. We really have nothing to lose by trying this. Prices are going to go up anyways. Maybe a refinery “brakes down” or there is a terrorist in the Middle East or whatever it is they feed us.
Hi Aaron! I agree with you when you mentioned that buying a fuel efficient car is the solution for saving gas and saving money! I appreciate as well the gas saving tips you’ve shared and it was really informative! Furthermore, I’ve also read that Japan is most famous for their cost efficient fuel cars. For example the recent Toyota Prius (which you also mentioned in your comment). For a cheap and reliable second hand cars, you might also wanna check this web site: http://www.nexusscars.com. This site provides most secured buying services to worlwide customers in very competitive prices. You can import as an individual or as a Dealer the price is one. My five cents and thanks for sharing!
heres a better idea. start walking for like a month to work or take a bus. protesting one day is stupid because gas will be 4.00 on may 16th when everyone goes to go buy it. gas should cost about 1.50 per gallon and no more. do you really think that protesting something for one day will be effective. Its not even a good idea. if your sick of being robbed by gas companies STOP BUYING IT PERIOD TILL THE PRICE OF IT IS MORE REALISTIC.
A one day boycott will make some impact if we don’t just refuse to BUY the product that day, but instead refuse to USE it. Just make May 15th a Don’t Drive Day. Maybe have one every month. But then that would require actual sacrifice compared to this idea which is just another example of lazy American activism at work.
PS – My next car purchase will be for a compressed air car. They’re coming soon! A couple of dollars to go about 150 miles at up to 68 MPH and NO POLLUTION and only vegetable oil changed every 50K miles for lubricant!
Just today here in edmonton the price jumped up to $1.30/L from $1.05/L. Its interesting how we have all this oil and gas and we ship it away…
off topic but i’m also going to compare this to the beef situation here… We have all this high quality pure bred beef so on and so forth but yet we ship it away to the states and we’re paying through the nose for beef from new zealand…
The government taxing on the fuel is getting ridiculous. I drive a 5.4l v8 pick up… because of work i can’t get by with out one… i work in the oilfield…
the prices keep going up yet the money i get paid for my truck does not… however if it did go up well then my company would have to charge the oil company more money… and then whats the oil company gonna do?
well i’m gonna go cork my ears…
There are lots of posts going around about a boycott of gas on May 15th. Although it’s a nice idea, it ISN’T ENOUGH. Skipping gas for one day will not make a difference because people will get thier gas the day before or the day after. It may have worked in 1997, but what people aren’t saying is that is hasn’t worked any year after that. And it’s been tried before.
If you are really tired of being ripped off by greedy oil companies, it’s time to do something REAL. According to the Associated Press, Exxon Mobil Corp. posted profits of $39.5 billion in 2006, the largest annual profit by a U.S. company. They have recently taken the number one spot as a Fortune 500 Company, topping Walmart. Other oil companies such as Chevron and ConocoPhillips have also greatly increased their profits by RAISING GAS PRICES to almost unaffordable prices. Gas is already at $4.00 in some cities such as San Francisco.
We in America work damn hard for our money. And now we have to work even harder so that we can afford the gas that gets us to work. These oil companies and shareholders are making thier profits by taking ours. And they are not worried. They know that we as Americans depend too much on our cars and their gas, to really do anything. But maybe we can prove them wrong.
I’m proposing more that a one-day boycott. I am calling for a FULL BOYCOTT OF EXXON GAS (includes VALERO)starting May 15th. Buy your gas from anywhere else. Let’s take back control of our resources instead of BEING CONTROLLED. And when they lower thier prices, we will move on to CHEVRON. And then to SHELL. If we boycott one company at a time, we CAN CHANGE THINGS. But YOU have to be willing, you have to care. Some of us can afford to pay $10 a gallon and some of us will do it if we have to. But we shouldn’t have to. THAT’S THE POINT. So please, PASS THIS ON. This is no crazy rant, this is a CHALLENGE. Let’s do what we can. Carpool, take public transportation when possible. It’s time to stop sitting back quietly and TAKE A STAND!
(please repost)
I still just put $10-$12 in my tank until I see a price drop. It keeps my tank half full. I just don’t drive around as much. When I see a price drop, I put $10-$12 more in the tank. It seems to work for me. I am more conservative in my traveling now, but I think we all just need to learn how to conserve again.
Boycotts do work the problem is there’s nothing united about the United States. It makes me sick.
Anyone who believes this works is completely ignorant of basic economics. If you want to change prices in the long run, change your behavior. Not just today, tomorrow, and this week, but forever. The reason gas prices are so high is that global demand continues to increase while the cost of drilling for and refining oil into gasoline continue to go up as the resource becomes more scarce. If everyone stopped driving large vehicles and drove less prices would eventually go down. Of course, few are willing to do this and instead we come up with stupid gimmicky solutions like not buying gas on a certain day. This will not work. The reason oil companies make so much money is that you keep demanding their product day in and day out. Not buying it one day will do absolutely nothing.
Mike G. you are a flaming republican talking head, vomiting the same diatribe anyone can hear an any conservative talk radio. I do agree with you about retards who refuse to trade their big stupid SUVs (like Ford Subdivision) and oversized monster trucks (the ones tiny-penis’d men are so fond of) for a four-cylinder. That is the best way to kick the oil greeds in the arse. But the best way is TO BAND TOGETHER AS AMERICAN: We — a United States of millions of people who are econically affected by this over-the-top greed — need to BOYCOTT. I do believe it can work, but we no longer have brains; we do what radio talking heads say we will/should/cannot do. The scary thing is, they’re right.
We will never know until May 16th so why not just give it a try? Just 1 day, no negativity about the boycott, just take one step with the trial and error mindset. We’ll learn from the 1 day boycott then maybe try 2? a week? A month? A month boycott from 1 company? write letters to congress? We’ll figure it out but hey, why not just GIVE IT A TRY AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS? Learning experience. Spread the word
GAS BOYCOTT MAY 15!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
in this day and age i think it would somewhat be logical to believe that all people bashing on this boycott actually work for the Government! They know the people are inching towards a REVOLUTION so they’re trying to inject false hopes into the vein of change! All this: “Stupid people…” “Heres why it wont work…” “urban legends” “not worth it” ahem…undercovergovernmentagents…ahem cough
keep it real America, trust your inner voice! If Revolution runs through our blood then let it do so freely!
GAS BOYCOTT MAY 15
A more effective boycott would be to globally attack one oil company at a time on a rotating boycott. This needs to be totally supported and well advertised. First week, nobody buys Shell. Next week nobody buys Esso. And so on. So we would still fuel up at a non-boycotted oil company, but the boycotted oil company would be forced to create a price war that would lower the prices. The boycotted oil company of the week would be a last minute surprise so they couldn’t prepare for it by dumping fuel into another member of their cartel.
OK, so boycotts are not effective. What we should do is ONLY go to the stations with the lowest price AND, do not ever buy anything in a gas station’s store. Do not but lotto, car washes, or even a candy bar.
Good points Jon and Scot. The idea of a rotating boycott sounds logical. For those who swear that boycotting won’t work, history past and present show that it does. Take the Imus incident: When companies started pulling the plug, they fired him. Yeah, they’re big companies, but there are millions of us who are outraged, and yes, ready for a revolution. LET’S TAKE BACK OUR COUNTRY. If we do not, our CHILDREN ARE DESTINED TO A HIGH-TECH SLAVERY; we will have the feudal system in full.
The one day boycott will not work!!! The only method that will truly work would be if everyone boycotted a specific gas company for a month. For example for the month of June Speedway gets the boycott and no one buys gas at any Speedway location, July BP Amoco gets the boycott, August, Shell gets the boycott, Sept. Marathon, Oct. Citgo and so on…..
I really believe if we put this boycott together correctly and got media attention gas price will plummet. This no gas day will just force more people to the pump the day prior and the day after. You have to start hurting “big oil” like they are hurting us, in the wallet and one at a time. Mark my words it will work!!!!!!
I have modified my gasoline purchase in several ways. In addition to buying a used car that gets over 30 MPG I no longer invest in gasoline futures by purchasing more than I need right now.
To that end, my purchases are made incrementally and are limited to $ 6.66
..just my personal way of sending a really evil message to them. At this point it’s literally like an electronic game to make the pump stop in time to hit the $ 6.66 mark .. !! Oh well ..
GAS WAR – an idea that WILL work
This was originally sent by a retired Coca Cola executive. It came from one of his engineer buddies who retired from Halliburton. It ‘ s worth your consideration.
Join the resistance!!!! I hear we are going to hit close to $4.00 a gallon by next summer and it might go higher!! Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action. Phillip Hollsworth offered this good idea.
This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the “don’t buy gas on a certain day” campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn’t continue to “hurt” ourselves by refusing
to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.
BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read on and join with us! By now you’re probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $2.99 for regular unleaded in my town. Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 – $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS
control the
marketplace…. not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can’t just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.
Here’s the idea:
For the rest of this year, DON’T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.
But to
have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It’s really simple to do! Now, don’t wimp out at this point…. keep reading and I’ll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people.
I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us sends it to at least ten more (30 x 10 =3D 300) … and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 =3D 3,000)…and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth group of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers. If those three million
get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it….. THREE
>>>>HUNDRED MILLION >>>>PEOPLE!!!
Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That’s all. (If you don’t understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people…. Well, let’s face it, you
just aren’t a mathematician. But I am, so trust me on this one.)
How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!!
I’ll bet you didn’t think you and I had that much potential, did
you?
Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. I suggest that we not buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN.
THIS CAN REALLY WORK.
PS: When Exon Mobil lowers its gas price below it’s competitors, buy from them till the other dealers lower or match their price. Then start the process all over again.
I do not understand what a one day boycott will accomplish. How about boycotting all but one gas company for an extended period of time. This will force the others to drop their prices, then when everyone goes for the lower prices the original gas company will have to do the same.
Instead of boycotting gas prices for one day only, lets try to start a pricing war among gas providers. The largest gas providers are Shell and Exxon. Lets boycott these two companies, thus forcing them to drop their prices under their competitors’. I have not purchased gas from either of these companies in a long time, and with your help, we can have a small effect on gas prices.
If you want to keep the price of gas as low as possible, stop buying from the more expensive stations. By only purchasing from places which offer the best deals, you are forcing other stations to lower their prices to stay in business. A BUYcott of lowest priced fuel can be done year round.
BOYCOTT EXON/MOBIL AND SHELL FOR THE NEXT SIX MONTHS, thru November 2007. Make them feel our hurt! There is no reason those CEOs should be laughing all the way to their bank with the GDP of a 3rd world nation. The divide between the Obscenely Wealthy and the starving poor must be leveled. This will only happen if we take action.
So many opinions, and we are all affected by the gas prices. The answer is definately within our means as consumers and the fact that we are still free to choose who to buy from. I agree about sending a message by not buying gas on the 15th, but only to get people’s attention to start a long term boycott on one agreed gas company until they lower their prices. It is up to us to make this work and if all we do is complain and don’t agree long enough to take action against the common problem then we only have ourselves to blame. about.com is a great place for information, if allowed, I hope we can all agree which station to start the boycott and take action immediately. Personally our family cannot afford to even drive anywhere that is not mandatory. We live to far away from a large town, and are stuck with extremely high prices in a rural area or we have to pay min. of $10. to buy our food, etc in town. The outrageous gas prices are affecting everyone in one way or another. Most of us simply cannot afford to live with these prices with not only gas going up, but food as well. The comment earlier about prices on apples..you have a choice not to buy apples that day. You have to have gas, and you have to have some food. We have to buy whatever is on sale just to eat. If bread goes up to $2. we simply don’t buy it, and if Milk is $4. same thing. If you have to live within your means you learn how. I say it is time that no American should have to do without gas, shelter, food, utilities or any necessatiy within reasonable means. We can send a message and it will work if we all will just stick together. This has worked in our American History and at least for a short time, we still have time to be heard. Let’s show them that we can stick together and agree to make a difference before they take that away from us as well.
GOD BLESS AMERICA!
so how bout this then….
STOP buying gas from ESSO & SHELL…if we want to hit them where it hurts and make a difference!
Canadians are hit the hardest with the gas prices and we are TAKING IT….ARGGGGHHHH this makes me angry. If this happened in the states there would be riots..!!! Not to mention that we are one of the largest suppliers. The only way we can make a difference is if we pick the largest gas companies out there.
Dont take it, make a difference STOP BUYING FROM ESSO & SHELL!!
Spread the word!!!
Can we all start a list to agree on when and who to start to boycott on the gas, and all items within the stores where the gas is sold? When do we start? Where do we start? Who wants to try this and see what will happen? I am willing? I liked the e-mail suggestion, but so many e-mails get passed along and forwarded and ignored, this needs the press to become involved. I know if we all took action then they would get involved. Lets start somewhere? Place and time…Let’s go!
Hey!!
I do not believe this Hope for boyscott for Gas seem silly I would keep up gas raise till 4.00 per gas I hope so let everyone would be wise for drive as care drive as need than silly around instead savelife for another like that…
One day will not work. Pick a company such as BP, boycot for a month and stay out of their stores, you will see them drop within a week. These stations make more money in their stores than on gas, don’t buy anything in a gas station store. I would start a web site to boycot BP but I don’t know how.
i am sure on board with this boycott, it is about time we do something. if it takes more than on day i am for that to,let them eat a little of the stuff they have been feeding us
Actually if you really want to hurt oil company’s lets go after the worst ones first…”the better world handbook” gives gas companies grades from A-F depending on a point system and how many rules or violations they have had…so although it may be hard to avoid them try to when you can…
Sunoco A
BP,amoco,Argo A-
Marathon Ashland, Super America B+
Citgo, 7-eleven B
Valero, Beacon B-
Total, Hess C+
Costco, Shell C
CHEVRON, Texaco D
Conoco, hillips, 76, Jet, Coastal D-
Exxon, Mobil F
You can’t ride your bike if you drive 100 miles a day to work & back in rural america where gas fluctuates $.30 per gallon depending on which gas station wants to not price gouge today!
The oil companies haven’t built a refinery here in the USA in over 30 years. Why should they when they can make billions with the ones they have. The government doesn’t care because the higher the price of gas = the more taxes they raise. We’re between a rock and a hard place!
Does anybody else remember that “I Love Lucy” episode where she gets a job at a chocolate candy factory? Remember the tremendous backup that occurred when things did not go like clockwork? The one day boycott should be similar to that wherein it will back up the fuel trucks who don’t have room in the gas station holding tanks, and since the fuel trucks can’t (theoretically) get rid of all the fuel they are taking to the gas stations, the refinery tanks won’t be empty enough to take all the oil from the oil tanker ships, which then, will have to wait for another day to be unloaded completely, and backing that up will cause other tanker ships coming into port to have to wait a bit longer before they are unloaded, and so on, back to the oil fields that are unloading the oil onto the tanker ships to be shipped to the U.S. and backing up the holding tanks so that the oil field pumps will have to be shut down for one more day. The oil can wait an extra day to be pumped, loaded, shipped, unloaded, refined, and delivered, but the oil companies/shipping companies are still having to pay all the employees to sit around twiddling their thumbs until the next day. I.e.: no production, but ongoing expense = monetary loss whether or not sales are up the following day.
you know I was thinking OPEC are TERRIORIST. think about it. what is a Terrioriest? is is someone one or thing that makes people fear things. when I wake up and see prices at 3.20 a gallon my heart starts to race. it is not cause my heart is bad it is cause I don’t know if I can get enough to even make it to work the next day and we are americans land of the free. LOL but as long as we americans allow this to happen we will never be free…
Steve G you are so right. We have collectively allowed ourselves to be economically victimized. I too fear what gas price will be posted each new day, as these wild fluctuations have hit my budget hard. I can not longer do much “pro-active planning” for my personal budget; I have fallen into a more “reactive” phase, and it is not because I live above my means. The OIL GREEDS
have no defense, what with their RECORD PROFITS. There simply is no excuse. We all need to GET AND STAY MAD AS HELL, AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!
Pick one company to boycot, let’s say ExxonMobil, (also cut back on gas in our daily lives). Then a boycot might work. We are too reliant on gas and the industry knows it. If we target one company we could maintain a boycot over a very long period of time, hopefully, long enough that that particular company would push for change.
the gas boycott is a great idea, but we need to be organized and boycott one company at a time, for a MONTH then go to the next company, boycotting wont do much for only a day, everyone wont do it, but to boycott one company could work and bring one company at a time to their knees
I drive to work everyday because I can afford it (even at 3 bux a gallon) and the people on the bus smell like urine (yes i do know that first hand). That’s my reality.
In a comparison of trains, planes and automobiles, a bus is the most energy efficient people mover in the world, so if you want to boycott something, you should have everyone ride the bus for one day. Of course that would only piss off the people that ride it everyday. Also, Big Oil is the new Big Tobacco is the new Big Cotton… History repeats and I’m out.
Well guys, this boycott will not work definitely, like everyone said it’s will come twice as much for the next day which will suck. To make a difference we need to change the life-style. hummers and crap like this must die, get on a bike when possible. Buy more efficient cars. This is the only way to go.
I thinks this is great.
I think we should not pump gas every Tuesday. I end up riding my bike today.. first time in a longtime. Maybe people carpool to work today for the first time … they might find that they enjoy it. If we use less gas maybe the prices will come down.
While it’s true that conserving gas is the best way to lower demand, only a boycott can express public outrage. We should be conservative on gas use, and vigilant against those who would siphon our wallets. My hind end is still chapped over Big Oil reporting 10 Billion dollar profits during our last great price hike.
My point is that this is not an “either/or” question. Conserve or Complain? We should do ALL we can to keep prices fair including well publicized boycotts.
Want to lower gas prices? Let the station owners put pressure on the oil companies themselves. How? Boycott the products they sell other than gasoline. We can make a short stop next door to buy cigaretts, milk, pop, lotto tickets and anything else besides the gasoline that we have to buy. Not for a day, or a week, but until the owners decide that enough is enough. What have we got to lose? They know that we need the gas and have to pay what they charge. What we don’t need is everything else in the station.
I AM A 100% DISABLED KOREAN WAR VETERAN AND I AM THOROUGHLY DISAPPOINTED IN EXXON-MOBILE CORP. THEY ARE BEING SELFISH AND GREEDY AND ARE DOING EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO DESTROY THE AMERICAN ECONOMY. THE REASON OUR CONGRESS WON’T DO ANYTHING ABOUT THEM IS BECAUSE CONGRESS GETS CAMPAIGN MONEY FROM THEM WHEN THEY RUN FOR OFFICE. IF YOU DOUBT THIS CHECK THE CONGRESSMAN AND SENATORS FINANCIAL STATEMENTS. THEY WILL NEVER DO ANYTHING TO STOP ANY OIL COMPANY FROM MAKING HUGE PROFITS. OUR FOOD PRICES, CLOTHING, UTILITIES AND EVERY OTHER NECESSITY IS INCREASING IN PRICE BECAUSE OF FUEL COST. PEOPLE ARE LOSING JOBS BECAUSE SO MANY BUSINESSES ARE GOING UNDER BECAUSE OF INCREASED FUEL PRICES. PEOPLE DON’T HAVE MONEY FOR ANYTHING ELSE BUT GASOLINE. WHEN IS IT GOING TO STOP? WE HAVE TO STOP DRIVING SO MUCH AND USE MASS TRANSIT AND CARPOOLS. LEAVE YOU CAR PARKED FOR 2 DAYS A WEEK. MAKE ONE TRIP FOR MANY NECESSARY JOURNEYS. $9.2 BILLION IS TOO MUCH PROFIT FOR ANY BUSINESS. I DON’T KNOW HOW THESE PEOPLE SLEEP AT NIGHT. ONE DAY THEY MAY HAVE TO STUGGLE LIKE A LOT OF US HAVE TO DO. “GOD” HELP OUR COUNTRY.

Prices of gas is really soaring up high, good thing with have a tax free gas station near our work.
I think it’s pretty damn strange that no one has any problem getting gas, you just have to pay up the ass for it.Exon made record breaking profits, something like 87 BILLION last year and no one in the government is going to do squat because they are all getting their share.I agree it is time to boycott one company till they decide that some resonable profit is better than nothing.we all need to get together and figure out how to make it happen
I am sorry if this is in the wrong place or wrong group.

Please visit http://www.end2crazygasprice.com and join us to implement it.
NO PROTEST! All you have to do is to remember the next time you fill up, STAY AWAY from SHELL, PETRO-CANADA, ESSO, and All ExxonMobil Gas stations.
“BOYCOTT” is the only option left for us to fight against this crazy gas prices, unless the government involve and regulate the gas price somehow!
I personally never, ever buy Shell, Exxon or Mobile … not even Chevron, nor Texaco. Biggest reason: they’re higher, and I do not believe that their gas is “better” for my engine; it’s BS. So boycotting is not a problem for me. I did not buy gas on 15-May, and if there is another “boycot date,” I will abide by that as well. I have sold my Ford F150 and purchased a smaller, 4-cylinder car. But is increasinly apparent that not enough people give a shit. Perhaps an assasination of OPEC is called for. Dare I (or any sane American for that matter) call for such an extreme measure? What is the true catalyst for change?
Hawian Don,
Are you really as stupid as you type? Why can’t you and the rest of the morons who believe in this government/big oil conspiracy try thinking instead of emoting? There is no evidence that any gouging is going on and there’s no evidence that the government is involved.
You left wing loonies need to find another outlet for your hate and guilt complexes?
Many people have given factual and compelling arguments as to why boycotts don’t work and why gas prices are as high as they are but it feels sooooooo good to emote instead of think eh?
C
i wonder if we could get a 5 or 7 day boycott the prices are crazy alot of people are having a very hard time. thanks
I heard that all gas stations are going to close the entire Memorial Day weekend to protest all the new taxes and costs associated with them. Is this true?!!!!!!!
I may participate in the boycott. It all depends on if I feel like driving that day. LOL
But seriously, I am one of those who say this organized boycott will not make a dent in the oil companie’s pocket book, even if a good number of people did participate. And I am not an under cover government agent, like some people have suggested people who poo poo this idea are (Innervoice).
I picture myself not buying gas at all May 15. That’s fine. I look at how much is in the tank and it says I have a half of a tank. I usually fill up only every few days. I will vow not to buy gas today and simply buy tomorrow. I’ll tell all of my friends not to buy either. Hell, I’ll even tell strangers. I picture business at the local gas stations all over town being very slow this fine Thursday as I drive to work. On my drive, I imagine that they will get very little business all day and I laugh a little evil of a laugh. I say, “That’s what they get for raising our gas prices. Ha ha ha!”
Well, actually, I think there are lots of factors that have gone into our gas prices, a commodity that we have come to rely on to the point that without it, we will hurt a little. One of those factors is that there simply is a lot less to go around, with much more consumers in the US and abroad and also having to look for more sources. It paints a pretty bleak picture. But the solution is not simply refusing to buy gas on one day. Sorry to burst your bubbles. Perhaps this silly little solution is what the government wants us to think. I don’t know.
But the thing is, I also put my shoes in the owners and managers of these gas stations. “Hmmmm… Not much business today. Oh yeah. That’s right. The boycott. I forgot. That’s OK. I’ll send a coupld of the guys home. We’ll have much more business than usual tomorrow to make up for this anyway. So, it won’t hurt us a bit.”
And that’s the truth of the matter. Everybody will say, “I’ll simply buy it tomorrow.” The only way we will really have an impact on big oil and also help the environment is to buy much less gas every day and that means using less gas on a daily basis.
That means walking to the store with a friend or family member for your groceries when it’s warm and carrying your groceries home. This is something I already do. I take my recycling to the recycling plant myself and when I am out that way, I run the errands I mean to do on that side of town when I am over there. I got an extra recycling bin and now I go every other week instead. Things like this make a huge impact over time.
In the last one, I meant to say, “I put myself in the shoes of the owners and managers.” Sorry for the comfusion.

you know im getting tired of them making up lies why the price of gas keeps going up why not just get on tv and say hey i want another vacation home so im gonna raise the price of oil the least they could do for all of us is tell the truth
