Test drive: 2007 Acura TL Type S

Friday May 4, 2007

2007 Acura TL Type SJason Fogelson, About.com's Guide to SUVs, got his first drive of the 2007 Acura TL Type S at a track event in November, in which he flogged the TL Type S around the 2.5 mile road course at Willow Springs International Raceway. I know this because I saw him do it, and I saw the big you-know-what-eating grin on his face afterwards. I'd like to say that he ran over to me, dropped to his knees, clasped his hands together, and begged me to let him write up the test-drive of the TL Type S. I'd like to, but I won't, because he will probably read the blog and post a comment with the truth -- there was no begging involved, but Jason really did want to spend more time with the TL. (The guy test drives vehicles like the Lincoln Navigator and Honda CR-V for a living, so really, can you blame him?)

So Jason did a week-long test drive of the Acura TL which, as it turns out, wasn't quite as stellar as he was expecting. He found the Acura TL Type S to be very comfortable, very nicely trimmed out, and very fast. But there was one little problem -- actually, one rather decent-sized problem -- that didn't show up on the track, but did rear its ugly head in everyday driving. Check out Jason's 2007 Acura TL Type S test drive and review for the details. -- Aaron Gold

Aaron, Jason,
Did the TL ever come with optional sh-awd? Someone told me that it was a [rare] option.

I would never respond to such blatant character assassination — actually, I would. But you’ll have to go to About SUVs to read my response.

By now, you know that I’m a big Honda guy…but this Acura is one big disappointment…its lack of refinement harkens back to the lack of sophistication I found last fall with the Pontic G6 gxp(whatever those initials were) that I drove in Nev/Cal. Great engine but crude execution…not what I would expect from Honda…and to mention this car in the same breath as the IS250 is ludicrous! There are 5-6 cars I would recommend in that price range before this one…Honda this one is a loser! I hope this is not a foreshadowment of things to come!!!
