Another cool Audi we can't get: The new RS6 Avant

Friday September 7, 2007

Audi RS6 AvantAudi has just announced it's newest dragon wagon, the RS6 Avant -- along with the news that it won't be available for sale in the US, at least not right away. Frankly, if the RS6 Avant's 580 horsepower twin-turbo V10 engine isn't enough reason to give up US citizenship, I don't know what is. Audi claims a 0-100 km/h (62 MPH) time of 4.6 seconds, a computer-limited top speed of 155 mph, and a cargo capacity of nearly 60 cubic feet with the seats folded down.

The RS6 Avant goes on sale in Europe in spring of '08. Will we get the RS6 Avant here in the States? For now the answer is no, though it seems as if they haven't totally shut the door on the possibility. OK, everyone, here's your assignment: Dress like you can afford to buy a $95,000 car and visit your local Audi dealer. Test drive an S6, then say "It's nice...too bad it's not available as a wagon with a couple of turbochargers." Then mumble something about the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon and leave. If enough of us do it, maybe Audi will get the message. Meanwhile, check out my Audi RS6 photo gallery. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go clean some drool off my keyboard.

So what’s with the onslaught of Deutschland Uber Vagons? I still find it ridiculous to spend such huge money on a go fast family vehicle. You can buy a zo6 Vette AND a Mini Cooper for the same money and have a whole lot more fun than in a juiced up grocery hauler. Please spare me the “under the radar stuff” cause the cost of a half a dozen super radar detectors is play money at this point!

It really is a cool car, but it is so expensive that I can’t imagine that Audi would sell many. Audi could make a well-reasoned case that the costs of certifying it for sale in the U.S. would not be offset by the number of sales.
