Ford has announced that the 2009 Mustang will offer an all-glass roof as a $1,995 option. The roof will use laminated solar reflective glass to give owners convertible-like views while keeping the interior cool and quiet. The glass-roof Mustang is scheduled to arrive in showrooms in mid-May 2008, but you can check out pictures of the 2009 glass-roof Mustang -- along with a spy shot of what is thought to be a heavily-disguised 2010 Mustang -- right now, courtesy of Jonathan Lamas, About.com's Guide to Mustangs. I think this is a very cool option. And, I’ve
gotta give it to Ford…I’ve only seen an all-glass roof option on cars on the level of Mercedes-Benz. It’s nice to have the option to get all the options you really want on a car that you like. I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to hear “you have to buy an Acura if you want memory seats b/c that not even an option on this $30,000 Honda that you want”.
I think the glass roof is a neat option. I cant imagine anyone that lives in storm and potential HAIL country (like me) ever wanting a glass roof. People who live in cold country knows what cold air and the heater does to glass, so they wouldnt want a glass roof. People who live in HOT country knows NOTHING is steameir than glass. A glass roof would be terrible to them. Nonetheless it is a neat option. Much better than *lets say* a 7 speed tranny to give lots better fuel economy in this $3+ gas. Yup FORD is right on top of it!! *on the GLASS top of it* Still a neat option though.
I think the glass roof would be a neat option.T he argument about steamy glass in hot weather doesn’t wash because my windows don’t steam up now,so why should a glass roof.A/C doesn’t allow for that except for a few moments until the interior cools down.I thought about the safety aspect in a roll-over accident, but then I thought about us always having convertibles, and that thought never occured to me then.If an accident happens,I don’t think cars are built to withstand roll-over anyway.I don’t see cyclists having to worry about ANY safety devices,so, what the heck.If you like the option, but it.
It’s a neat option, but I don’t see it being anything more than a temporary novelty……probably one model run.
I find the elongated sunroof in my Mini to be hot and annoying. Mini does put a mesh-type screen up there but its woefully inadequate and ther’s no place to hide an opaque screen. For me, this is a useless option. BUT my wife loves it! So the Stang roof would be awesome for her. Therefore, I think that this option might be a successful marketing tool, but to a limited market.
As a convertible owner it’s all about feeling the wind in your hair. This doesn’t compare.
Hey iameriica, I wish I had a convertible…and hair. But, really, a glass top is fun to look at. It’s a bit of a novelty. And I think that is what it’s all about. How practical could it be? Probably not very. Even annoying at times like hawaiian don said. You’d probably be the only one on the block to have one, though …if you care about that sort of thing. Sight seeing would be awesome in the mountains!!
Iameriica, you’re right, it’s all about the wind in your hair thing…but like Mike, I just wish I had the hair!
Having been in ‘hot’ areas … sunroofs are bad, even when closed, it can get up to 115F or hotter… and you can really feel the HEAT through a closed sunroof. I would imagine this could be a lot worse. .. For cold weather I think this would kick ass … instead of a convertible, this would keep you warm on those frosty mornings.
I do not plan on buying a convertible or glass top til I get a nice garage, because well, even horses get stables, these ponies, really any car of value, demands a garage.
Definitely a cool option! Screw yer 7 SPD tranny!!! -though I would think the glass top would be much less drag than an open (maybe even closed) convertible top.
… the ‘glass’ may even resist hail better than metal (less dents, more bounce)
