Suggestions wanted: Best new cars for moms

Wednesday May 7, 2008

2007 Subaru Legacy GT WagonWith Mother's Day right around the corner, I thought it was time to update my list of the best new cars for moms, especially as some of the cars, like the Honda Accord, have been redesigned, while others, such as the Subaru Legacy wagon, have been discontinued for 2008. Not to mention the fact that gas prices are about double what they were the last time I updated the list, and I know that many moms are more concerned than ever with a fuel-efficient ride.

So what do you think would make a great mom's car? And if you're a mom, what do you look for in a car? Click the "comments" link below to have your say. -- Aaron Gold

(1) Hawaiian Don says:

Oil is shooting up into the the mid $100 per barrel. Reality for most Americans is a SUV with reasonable gas mileage. Rav4, CR-V and their hybrid counterparts as well as some of the smaller more fuel efficient crossovers should be the new trend, as I see it. These fuel prices seem to be rising unabated and are becoming a reality in America as they have been in Europe for a long, long time. Families (average ones at least) are not going to be buying size or horsepower any more. I hope our US auto builders are ready for the change. The days of “Big cars…big profits” are over gang!!!

(5) Jerry says:

Again, yet ANOTHER article failing to mention Hyundai. Any vehicle in their line-up would exceed mom’s transportation needs, provide fuel efficency, reliability, a peace of mind warranty and safety features that cost extra on most other cars.

No one mentions Hyundais because they are stinky. My brother has a stinky purple Hyundai. Boy is he whipped! What moms need is a Honda Element. They are very safe, have loads of cargo space and are fuel efficient. Plus, you can wipe up the floor of all the messes they make! My mom has a Saturn :(

Jerry, you have a great point. Hyundai has more than proven that it builds cars that are equal to or better than most companies out there.
This is without question, I think, the company that all other automakers need to keep an eye on. The problem is that when you say their name alot of people only remember their beginning when they were terrible.

(10) Mustang Matt says:

The Ford Escape, Mazda Tribute, and the Mercury Mariner?

i know its all the same platform, but drive one.. there on par with Toyota and Honda as far as things go, and The Escape is a ball with 4wheel drive and the SOHC 4.0 6er.

First safety considered
Second fuel economy balanced with initial cost.
Third and last is what do other people thinks of it’s pizazz. Right, it is not relevant.
