About.com Mazdaspeed Flyer II: Ready to race!
First of all, I want to thank everyone who answered my call for tips on building a Pinewood Derby car. I got lots of responses and lots of good information, and here are the results -- the About.com Mazdaspeed Flyer II!
I won't go into the details of her construction just yet, as I don't want to tip off any of my competitors as to the Flyer II's secrets. (Maybe after the race I should write up a formal About.com Mazdaspeed Flyer II test drive.) One of the big steps was converting her from a coupe to a hatchback. Officially, she is a Mazdaspeed3 -- Mazda is putting on the race, and as the old adage says, "Know what to kiss, and when" -- although I have subtituted the real car's 263 hp turbocharged engine for Newton's law of universal gravitation.
The race and the concours take place Tuesday, and I'll let you know how the Flyer II and I make out. Meanwhile, you can check out more photos in my About.com Mazdaspeed Flyer II photo gallery. -- Aaron Gold

Hey Aaron. The car looks good. I see it passed the sniff (smog) test. What was the sticker price, what options does it come with, what kind of warranty does it have, and how did it do on the NHTSA/IIHS crash tests?
That things bad ass. I like the window treatments and the tapering orange strip especially. Don’t forget to rub a banana on the wheels before go time.
It’s late in the day and I thought to wish you well. Hope you did well. The car looks great! Great job.
that is one cute dog!
Good Luck! Hope you kicked butt with your very mean looking machine!!!
