Best New Cars of 2013

Happy New Year, everyone! As is our tradition, we're starting off the New Year with my picks for the Best New Cars of 2013. The rules for eligibility are pretty straightforward: In order to make the list, a vehicle must be significantly new or redesigned for 2013; it must be a car (as opposed to a pickup or an SUV, although as you'll see, I've sort of broken that rule a bit); and I have to have driven it.

Now, you might notice that the list is a little short this year -- only eight cars (technically ten, but I've listed two pairs as a single vehicle), the lowest number since 2008. That said, I think I did less debating about the cars on this list than I ever had. I didn't have to think twice about any of the entries on this list -- I think they all stand out compared to the competition.

Okay, enough preamble -- check out my picks for the Best New Cars of 2013. And let this be the beginning of a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year for all of us! -- Aaron Gold

I am really liking the Fusion. It is beautiful in an Aston Martin kinda way. The reviews are great and Ford dependability is world-class. Sounds and looks like a winner here and in the marketplace.

Is it possible to admire a car but not like it? That’s where I am at on the new Fusion. While I read the great reviews and certainly respect the auto press accolades, I have seen a number of them locally, and they do not do a thing for me. I realize I am in the minority, but I actually like the looks of the old Fusion better. I prefer a car with a bit more glass for visibility (and looks), and the new one looks to me like you would be driving looking out of a mailbox slot. Yes, the new one is definitely more contemporary looking, and maybe I would change my mind once I would drive one. But right now, there are a number of midsizes I would buy first if looks were the only criteria. Just my opinion.

How do you choose a “best car” with no info on reliability yet? This seems more like a commercial than real information…

I see the Chevrolet Spark made the list… Best way to die on the freeway maybe?

Roy, IMHO the easiest way to die on a freeway on 4 wheels…Smart for Two.
The Spark is quick and quite nimble and can avoid an accident. The Smart? Not so much.
