Test drive: 2013 Ford Focus ST

2013 Ford Focus ST

So, here we have it -- my Ford Focus ST review. I always spend too much time fretting over reviews like this, because I really want to convey a sense of what it's like to drive the car... and in the case of the Focus ST, the driving experience is pretty darn unique. If you have the opportunity to test drive a Ford Focus ST, by all means do it! And if you don't, well, come along and take a ride with me. -- Aaron Gold

I’ve had a chance to drive this wonderful car and your review is spot on. Ford apparently has some great engineers mainly in Germany. Could they do the same sort of treatment for other cars in the Ford family?

As prior readers have pointed out the Lincoln division should stop trying to be a pseudo-Lexus pretender and sell ONLY vehicles like the Focus ST. Let the German-Ford engineers make ST-types and turn Lincoln into a car enthusiast luxo-division.

(Sigh…) And again we in Canada get the worse deal – the ST here starts at 30k without destination and all other fees…

Sounds like a really neat car. If I were into hatchbacks, this would probably be on my radar at some point. This will make a really nice alternative for the GTI crowd. Love that it comes with a real manual transmission too!

The quote
“Infact, I’d bet that if you covered the Ford badge on the steering wheel and sent ten car fanatics out for a drive on the About.com Top Secret Curvy Test Road, nine of them would never guess that this was a product of the Big Blue Oval.”

And you should have added, when they found out it was a Ford, they would begin to nit pick and find faults in the car.

That is the problem with many auto writers…there is bias against American cars.

I waited patiently for this car to finally arrive in NorCal, I walked into a dealership test drove it. They had a $5000 mark up on it, (Towne Ford, Redwood City) I walked out. Found another at Serramonte, no mark up, bought it on the spot and have never been happier with a car. A total blast to drive on back roads here, we have plenty! My only petty gripes are excessive brake dust and the gas tank is too small for the mileage I get. Go Tangerine Scream!

Tracy — Glad you mentioned the gas tank — that was one of my gripes and I was so busy gushing about the car that I left it out! I’ll add that to the review posthaste. — Aaron

Now, Iím not usually a fan of the hot-hatch genre, but I gave a black-on-black ST a good looking over on a recent visit to a local Ford showroom, and I was impressed.

What impressed me was that the ST is not just a five-door compact with lots of wings and scoops added on. On the contrary, from every angle this thing looks like a purpose-built performance machine, one that was designed from the ground up to be just what it is. From the front fascia, to the seats, to the subtle ground effects and the center-mounted dual exhaust, it all looks right.

Looks-wise, this is a car that should put a smile on your face every time you climb in.

@Steve in GA, it does put a smile on my face. I enjoy taking the long way home.

Also, this car runs on regular fuel, a huge plus over other turbos. You can use premium for more horses according to what I have read. (I believe 10 more)

Wow this is horrible. So which car should one buy? The Focus ST, Scion FR-S/BRZ, GTI, Fiat 500 Abarth, Golf R, Evo, or STI? This is just a nightmare!
Off topic Aaron why don’t all cars come with a Bluetooth interface to the ODBCII system? It would be so handy!

Iwatcdr: Out of that bunch? STI.
