The Inside Story: The 2004 Audi A4 is a superb example of refined, yet restrained interior design, much admired and copied. Front seat passengers will be comfortable, well-supported in the curves. Rear seat passengers may find legroom a little short and climbing in and out isn't easy. There is no lack of interior amenities in the base A4, including dual zone automatic climate control; optional upgrades include leather, power moonroof, sound systems with up to ten speakers and 6-CD in-dash changer.
Under the Hood: Choices in the engine compartment are several but the standard 1.8 liter Turbo four delivers 170 hp and plenty of torque, which moves the 2004 Audi A4 along handily. Those wishing more urge can go for the 220 hp 3-liter V-6. At the far end of the scale is the S4's V-8, but that puts the S4 in quite another category. Quattro all-wheel-drive is available with all engines.
Transmissions: The 1.8 comes with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic, add Quattro all-wheel-drive and the manual adds one more gear for a total of six, order a V-6 and choose between a 6-speed manual or the terrific CVT (continuously variable transmission).
Warranty: 4 years/50,000 miles bumper-to-bumper. 4years/50,000 miles powertrain.
Should You Buy An 2004 Audi A4?: With the 2004 Audi A4 you get elegant styling, nimble handling, a great interior, outstanding engineering. It's a fun car if you're serious about driving and with so many engine, transmission, and drive-system options, you'll have no trouble ordering an Audi A4 that suits your style and personality. The only negative is the matter of rear seat roominess; fine for two normal-size adults but if you'll regularly be carrying tall people back there this may not be the car for you. Other than that, we think the 2004 Audi A4 is a best buy, at least for the price.
