Snapshot: Chevrolet's attempt to woo the buyer who still prefers traditional family cars is evident in its front-wheel-drive flagship sedan. 6-passenger seating is available in the base model; three V-6 engines are offered, including the supercharged SS model. All-independent suspension is a major plus.
How Much?: Price for a 2004 Chevrolet Impala in the US ranges from $21,900 for the base, to $27,995 for the performance SS.
The Inside Story: A bench front seat suits traditionalists and cab drivers but bucket seats are available in all but the base. The rear seat is roomy but sits too low. Plastic trim detracts, road noise is, well, noisy. Spacious trunk made with golfers in mind.
Under the Hood: Start with an economical 180 hp V-6, upgrade to 200 hp if needed for trailer-pulling. Or go gung-ho for the performance-minded 240 hp supercharged SS V-6 and enjoy back-slamming acceleration. EPA gas mileage: 19/29 city/highway.
Transmissions: There is only one transmission in the 2004 Chevrolet Impala, a 4-speed automatic. Most buyers won't notice, though a 5-speed would have been nice in the SS.
Warranty: 3 years/36,000 miles bumper-to-bumper. 3 years/36,000 miles powertrain.
Should You Buy a 2004 Chevrolet Impala?: The Impala is a conservative car for conservative folk, but that's not necessarily a negative as it provides up to 6-passenger seating in a comfortable, safe, reliable vehicle. Plus ample space for luggage in a large trunk. Fuel mileage won't impress anyone, but isn't excessive for a car of this size and weight. Lacking excitement, the Impala has been juiced up with a 240 hp supercharged SS that's loaded with torque.
