Snapshot:
Hyundai competes against the Accord and Camry with the 2004 Hyundai Sonata and does so competently at a lower price and with a longer warranty. Two engines are offered and even the base Sonata is well-equipped. Moving up to the GLS and LX models ups the price but the added features are still a bargain for the cost-conscious buyer. How Much?:
Price for a 2004 Hyundai Sonata in the US ranges from $15,999 for the base model to $19,799.The Inside Story:
Comparable to the competition in roominess, the Sonata comes with air, cruise, side airbags, AM/FM/CD stereo, and a lighted trunk. The GLX and LS offer even more features, such as a power moon roof, heated mirrors, and HomeLink garage door opener. Expect a comfortable ride with a hint of sporty handling.Under the Hood:
The base engine in the front-wheel-drive 2004 Hyundai Sonata is a competent twin-cam 2.4 liter four, providing 138 hp and 147 lb-ft. of torque. The optional 4-cam V-6, which also finds a home in the Hyundai Santa Fe, delivers its 170 hp smoothly. Both engines provide a decent level of performance, with the V-6 having an obvious edge.Transmissions:
You can choose between a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic with the four; the V-6 gets an automatic.Warranty:
5 years/60,000 miles bumper-to-bumper. 10 years/100,000 miles powertrain.Should You Buy a 2004 Hyundai Sonata?:
In this highly competitive segment the 2004 Hyundai Sonata appeals because of its lower price and exceptional warranty. Add to that the equipment level, attractive styling, and nicely-balanced handling from a sophisticated all-independent suspension system, and clearly the 2004 Hyundai Sonata represents great value. We wish ABS braking was standard but at least it is available as a stand-alone option, or with traction control.
