Snapshot: It's an all-new 2004 Mitsubishi Galant and unlike the prior model this one's stylish and driver-oriented. The aggressive wedge-shape makes for a more spacious Galant. Suspension and steering were developed for responsive handling. Both engines, four and six, are true performers in the sports sedan tradition.
How Much?: Price for a 2004 Mitsubishi Galant in the US ranges from $17,997 for the base model to $25,697 for a loaded GTS.
The Inside Story: One of the best-looking instrument panel/console arrangements we've seen in this class, and the steering wheel's a gem. Getting in the back of a wedge-shaped sedan is always awkward but once inside the 2004 Mitsubishi Galant, there's plenty of shoulder room. A short, sloped hood and large windscreen result in better forward visibility. Available luxury features include leather seating surfaces, heated front seats and a 270-watt Mitsubishi/Infinity® AM/FM/6-CD audio system with 8 speakers
Under the Hood: The 4-cylinder Galant comes with a hefty 160 hp, which is all most people need. But the performance-oriented can order an LS or GTS with a big, single-overhead-cam, 3.8 liter V-6 and 230 horses. ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution is standard on LS/GTS models, optional on ES.
Transmissions: The only transmission in the 2004 Mitsubishi Galant is a 4-speed automatic. A clutchless manual shift mode is available for those who like to choose their own shift points.
Warranty: 3 years/50,000 miles bumper-to-bumper. 5 years/60,000 miles powertrain.
Should You Buy a 2004 Mitsubishi Galant?: The Galant has always been a comfortable, reliable ride but lacked pizzaz, both in appearance and performance. The 2004 Mitsubishi Galant changes all that. You can buy this car for looks, for the way it handles on twisting mountain roads; in essence, for its character. But the comfort and security remains, along with a high level of standard equipment. The Galant is now a serious contender in the family car stakes. Kudos to Mitsubishi for headlights that actually look like lights, not weapons.
