Snapshot:
Redesigned for 2004, the Pontiac Grand Prix is taller, wider, and much cleaner in appearance. But the aggressive look remains in the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix. A fully-independent suspension and disc brakes all-round add to the Grand Prix's personality. Model designations are simpler, too: GT1, GT2, GTP.
How Much?:
Price for a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix in the US ranges from $21,760 for the GT1 to $25,860 for the GTP.
The Inside Story:
The added height and width of the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix will be appreciated by those five adults who can now fit comfortably. But upswept windows make the rear seating area claustrophobic and getting in may result in banged heads or mussed hairdos. All models have well-equipped interiors, the high-tech look still dominates, and the heads-up instrument display remains an option.
Under the Hood:
Pontiac uses the traditional pushrod V-6 for its Grand Prix, with 200 hp. Pushrod engines do, however, deliver plenty of low-speed accelerative torque. The 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix gets a supercharged version delivering 260 hp with 280 lb-ft. of torque.
Transmissions:
Only one transmission is available, regardless of model; a 4-speed automatic.
Warranty:
3 years/36,000 miles bumper-to-bumper. 3 years/36,000 miles powertrain.
Should You Buy a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix?:
Place the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix next to an '03 and the differences are immediately obvious. This car has presence without relying on gimmicks and add-on's. It has always appealed to the man (the Grand Prix is a "guy" car) who likes style and performance, or at least the impression of performance. A Comp G package adds to the real thing, with a tuned suspension and steering system, a sequential paddle shifter for manual gear shifting, and a final drive ratio that permits faster take offs. We find the wedge shape with its minimal rear window glass somewhat outdated but there's no doubt the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix has attitude, just like its owners.
