Snapshot:

Practical but fun, the front-wheel-drive, turbocharged 2004 Saab 9-3 has been redesigned and now shares its platform with the German Opel. Linear, Arc, and Aero versions offered, each offering its own special character.

How Much?:

US prices for a 2004 Saab 9-3 range from $26,090 for the base Linear to $42,500 for the Aero convertible.

The Inside Story:

Saab's new shape has resulted in a pleasing interior with decent trunk space, but we miss the hatchback that made this car so much better than the competition. Fortunately the ignition location, on the console, remains the same. Rear seat room is a bit tight and the ride, tuned for handling, is firm. Equipment and safety levels are high, especially in the Arc and Aero models. The new convertible includes rollbars that pop up in the rare event of a rollover.

Under the Hood:

Base engine is a turbocharged DOHC four producing 178 hp and 195 lb.-ft of torque. Arc and Aero Saabs come with a 210 hp High Output Turbo four.

Transmissions:

Linear and Arc versions of the 2004 Saab 9-3 get a 5-speed manual, the Aero has a 6-speed manual. A 5-speed automatic is available.

Warranty:

5 years/50,000 miles bumper-to-bumper. 4 years/60,000 miles powertrain.

Should You Buy A 2004 Saab 9-3?:

We've always had a soft spot for Saabs, perhaps because our experience goes back to the days when the only model was a small hatch with a 3-cylinder engine. They were quirky and fun to drive, and subsequent models maintained the same characteristics. Immensely practical, too, thanks to the hatch, but that's gone as owner GM enforces its influence. The new Convertible, though, is still unique, and the Aero turns the 2004 Saab 9-3 into a true sports sedan. Buy one and be a little different.
