Snapshot: Saturn's mid-size sedan now features a more powerful 4-cylinder engine as standard, V-6 is optional, automatic transmission comes at no charge. Composite fenders and door skins resist dings and scratches. Styling is fresh, the equipment level high. A wagon is available.
How Much?: Price for a 2004 Saturn L300 in the US ranges from $16,370 for the base sedan to $24,735 for the V-6 station wagon..
The Inside Story: All 2004 Saturn L300 models now come with dual front and side-curtain airbags. AM/FM stereo with CD, tilt steering, cruise, heated outside mirrors, power door locks and windows, air-conditioning, 60/40 split-folding rear seats are among the base model's standard features. Seating is roomy and comfortable for five passengers.
Under the Hood: The 2.2 liter Ecotech 4-cylinder engine has been upped in output to 140 hp and 150 lb.-ft. of torque. The optional 3.0 liter V-6 offers 182 h.p. and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. EPA mileage 24/33 mpg.
Transmissions: Only one transmission is available, regardless of model; a 4-speed automatic.
Warranty: 3 years/36,000 miles bumper-to-bumper. 3 years/36,000 miles powertrain.
Should You Buy a 2004 Saturn L300?: Originally derived from a German Opel sedan, the 2004 Saturn L300 has taken on more of its own personality lately in styling, ride, and features. However the European genes are evident in its handling, thanks to a fully-independent suspension system aided by 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS. Added power in the 4-cylinder engine puts it on a par with most Japanese competitors. Well-equipped as it is, and with an even better range of options in V-6 models, the 2004 Saturn L300 makes a fine all-round family sedan. Nothing spectacular, but decent value. And we do like the fact that buyers can opt for a wagon. Versatility adds even more value.
