Snapshot:
All-wheel-drive is standard on every Subaru. Also unique to Subaru (Porsche excepted) is the flat-four and flat-six engine configuration. Outback versions are raised like an SUV. Station wagons available.
How Much?:
Price for a 2004 Subaru Legacy in the US ranges from $19,895 for the base sedan to $32,495 for the 6 cylinder Outback station wagon.
The Inside Story:
A special 35th Anniversary Edition gets a 6-way power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, woodgrain trim, power moonroof (two on the wagon). Legacys are notably comfortable inside, suitable for long journeys. The L.L. Bean Edition includes special trim. Wagons are spacious load carriers.
Under the Hood:
Subaru's flat-opposed engines contribute to a lower center of gravity. The 2.5 liter four delivers 165 hp and the 3.0 litre six puts out a generous 212 hp. EPA gas mileage 22/28.
Transmissions:
The four-cylinder engine can be had with a 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic. The six comes only with the automatic.
Warranty:
3 years/36,000 miles bumper-to-bumper. 3 years/36,000 miles powertrain.
Should You Buy a 2004 Subaru Legacy?:
Subarus have long been a favorite in snow country because of their standard all-wheel-drive. Buyers in the know also appreciate the flat engine's lower center of gravity, which aids handling. The Outback's higher ground clearance can be an advantage in some circumstances and we hear that Subaru will soon deliver all Legacys in that configuration in order to qualify the car as a truck. This aids the firm's national fuel fleet average which is good for Subaru as truck regulations are less stringent than cars. Whether this is good for you, only you can decide. Other than that, we've always liked Subarus as tough, practical vehicles.
