In our opinion, the 2004 Volkswagen Passat has one of the best, and best-looking, interiors in this class. Entry is easy, seats are firm and supportive, dash layout simple and intuitive. It's roomy enough for tall families. Comes with air-conditioning, power windows, mirrors and door locks, tilt/telescope steering wheel. All models except 4Motion have folding rear seats. Wagon has more cargo room than some SUVs.Under the Hood:
Base engine is a 1.8 turbo 4-cylinder that produces 170 hp, and 166 lb.-ft. of torque at a very low 1950 rpm. Optional 2.8 V-6 delivers 190 hp. A superb new diesel pumps out 134 hp and a hefty 247 lb.-ft. of torque. The W8 (two fours joined in a VEE at a common crankshaft) gives 270 hp with 273 lb.-ft of torque at just 2750 rpm. EPA mileage 22/32 (1.8T).Transmissions:
All models come with a choice of 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic.Warranty:
4 years/50,000 miles bumper-to-bumper. 5 years/60,000 miles powertrain.Should You Buy a 2004 Volkswagen Passat?:
The 2004 Volkswagen Passat is one of our test team favorites. A cut above the rest in refinement, pure joy to drive regardless of which engine you choose. And the choice is truly remarkable. Don't overlook the diesel, which is quiet, clean, and gets off the line quickly. The W8 is so fast it's almost a different car, but you'll pay a hefty premium for the privilege of owning one. We like the wagon, too, while the 4Motion all-wheel-drive adds bad weather capability. The Passat handles like a German car should, the steering is precise. All Passats have 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS, traction control, electronic locking differential. A car built for drivers.
