Snapshot:
The RSX is Acura's answer to the luxurious yet affordable sport coupe and comes in just two trim levels, base and Type-S. The Type-S offers more horsepower and only comes with a 6-speed manual transmission (the 6-speed isn't available on the base model). While we call it a coupe, it's technically a hatchback (not that there's anything wrong with that).
How Much?:
Price for a 2004 Acura RSX in the US ranges from $20,570 to $23,865.
The Inside Story:
There's not a lot to fuss with here; the RSX is a car that's more about driving than it is about fiddling with the whatever you currently fiddle with. That's not to say this isn't a sterling-designed interior marked by very good materials and superb workmanship; it surely is. The back seat is tight, however. In fact, you're best served folding those rear seats down and using it as the best-handling carryall you can buy. Standard safety features: antilock brakes, front and side airbags.
Under the Hood:
The base RSX comes with a four-cylinder engine that produces 160 horsepower and returns 27 city/33 highway. The Type-S also has a four-cylinder engine but it produces 200 horsepower and returns 24 city/31 highway. You'll need to wind up the revs to get the best from the Type-S, however. The base model is easier to live with.
Transmissions:
While three transmissions are available with the RSX, the base model comes with a choice of 5-speed automatic or 5-speed manual. The Type-S only comes with a 6-speed close-ratio manual gearbox.
Warranty:
Bumper-to-bumper: 4 years/50,000 miles Powertrain: 4 years/50,000 miles
Should you Buy a 2004 Acura RSX?:
Yes. The RSX offers great handling, superior build quality and even a dash of smart utility. Keep in mind this car is more about spirited driving than it is people hauling, so if carrying four (forget five) is something you'll be doing often you might want to double-check the rear seat. It's not the fastest coupe on the block but because of its reasonable price, the RSX offers a package that really can't be beat. Contrarian view: Get more stuff for your money! Check out the Mitsubishi Eclipse and Toyota Celica.
