Snapshot: The SLK is Mercedes' affordable two-seat roadster. It comes in three trim levels based on performance: SLK230, SLK320 and SLK32 AMG (the AMG is in a league all by itself and not covered here). The metal hardtop folds into the trunk automatically. Unusual for a Mercedes roadster, you can buy one for just over $40,000.
How Much?: Price for a 2004 Mercedes SLK in the US ranges from $40,320 to $45,770.
The Inside Story: This is the only roadster in this price range that functions as both coupe and convertible. The convenience of the hardtop is very easy to take for granted -- it makes a big difference. While small inside, the interior is unmistakably Mercedes in finish and quality. All standard safety features apply: front/side airbags, traction control, stability control.
Under the Hood: Two engines are available, a 2.3 liter generating 192 horsepower and a 3.2 liter with 215 horsepower. The smaller engine returns 23 city/30 mpg highway and the larger gives 17 city/26 highway.
Transmissions: A 6-speed manual transmission is standard on both trim levels. A 5-speed automatic is optional at no extra cost.
Warranty: Bumper-to-bumper: 4 years/50,000 miles. Powertrain: 4 years/50,000 miles.)
Should you Buy a 2004 Mercedes SLK?: There is no doubt that if you enjoy the comfort of a hardtop this is way to go. There's heavy competition in this price-segment ($40k... okay, under $50k with all the fancy options) so if you aren't a die-hard Mercedes loyalist it's going to be a tough pick. When it comes to performance the SLK isn't as sporty as the Honda S2000 but it's a more relaxing ride. And finally, while it may not matter to some buyers, the SLK gets a total redesign for 2005.
