Snapshot: BMW's Z4 is a rear-wheel-drive convertible (often called a roadster) that seats just two. Offering two engines and great handling this sports car continues BMW's reputation for a great driving machine.
How Much?: Prices for a 2004 BMW Z4 in the US range from a base $34,295 to $41,595.
The Inside Story: With an interior that's more-functional than gadget-laden the Z4 carries over the same design from 2003. Included: anti-lock brakes and front/side airbags. Stability and traction control are also standard.
Under the Hood: BMW offers a choice of two six-cylinder engines delivering up to 225 horsepower. Both engines offer roughly the same fuel economy: 20 city/28 highway.
Transmissions: While a six-speed manual is standard, there's a choice of two automatic transmissions (one sportier than the other).
Warranty: Bumper-to-bumper and powertrain is 4 years/50,000 miles.
Should you Buy a 2004 BMW Z4?: The Z4 (and before it the Z3) did to the high-end roadster what Mazda's Miata did for the low-end roadster: brought them back from the dead. While the Z4's styling is quite different from its predecessor (and the cause for long debates), there is little debate about one thing: it's a better car than the Z3 (and that's saying a lot). If you want a luxurious roadster that knows how to handle (and have $41k to spend), the Z4 is the car to buy.
