Snapshot: Introduced in 1990 as a modern version of the British sports car, the Miata brought the small, affordable, fun-to-drive roadster back from the dead. This two-seater convertible is available in two trim levels (Base and LS) plus a brand new Mazdaspeed option which is all about performance.
How Much?: Price for a 2004 Mazda Miata in the US ranges from $21,868 to $25,500.
The Inside Story: The Miata may be a small car on the outside but it's surprisingly roomy inside. Less obvious is that Mazda's kept the price down by eliminating a lot of options. No side or head airbags. No traction or stability control, either. The low price reflects all of this, however.
Under the Hood: The relatively small 1.8 liter engine produces a reasonable 142 horsepower. If that's not enough, the Mazdaspeed model produces 178 hp (35% more). Expect around 22 city/28 highway with the standard engine.
Transmissions: A 5-speed manual is standard, a 6-speed manual optional in some models, or you can opt for a 4-speed automatic.
Warranty: Bumper-to-bumper: 4 years/50,000 miles. Powertrain: 4 years/50,000 miles.
Should you Buy a 2004 Mazda Miata?: The Mazda Miata is a truly a fun ride. There's not a lot of competition in the mid-$20s segment and there's certainly nothing that comes close to the true sports car feel that this (now) veteran can achieve. While performance and handling are certainly good, the Mazdaspeed edition offers a considerable boost in performance. Our advice? We recommend the Miata and for those who need it, we can certainly encourage the purchase of the more powerful Madzaspeed edition. A better roadster bargain than the Miata just can't be found.
