Snapshot:
The Scion xB is a funky design from new car brand Scion, aiming for the 20-something crowd. A small wagon/van in the same way the Honda Element is a compact SUV. With lots of room and a low price, the xB is definitely worth consideration if you are looking for something versatile (and something different). Oh, rest easy: Scion is a Toyota brand so the quality is there.
How Much?:
Price for a 2004 Scion xB in the US ranges from $13,680 to $14,480.
The Inside Story:
Who knew that boxy was in? Years after Volvo dumped boxing for smoother lines, along comes Scion in all its squareness. That shape has its plusses, one being that it's very space-efficient. While the inside has plenty of low-grade plastic, it's a versatile interior. On the plus side, a surprising amount of safety equipment is standard (even on the $13k model): antilock brakes, front airbags (no side airbags available), and traction and stability control.
Under the Hood:
The small 1.5 liter engine produces 108 horsepower, which is enough for the xB's weight. Acceleration from rest is slightly slower with the automatic, better with the manual transmission. Passing acceleration is adequate with either transmission.
Transmissions:
The 5-speed manual tranmission is standard. A 4-speed automatic is optional.
Warranty:
Bumper-to-bumper: 3 years/36,000 miles. Powertrain: 5 years/60,000 miles.
Should you Buy a Scion xB?:
Toyota is a smart company. When figuring out how to attract customers they don't resort to what Detroit does: lowering prices. They design a new brand thought-out for a certain demographic. And that's exactly what they've done here. The xB is only going to appeal to a particular crowd but that crowd will love it. The best part is its starting price; low enough for that crowd to afford. In fact, most of the features we personally find necessary (the safety equipment listed above) plus AC, power windows, power locks, and power mirrors are actually standard equipment. Competition is the Honda Element which is a little more "adult" (and bigger and a little pricier) than the xB so if we're just talking dollars here, the xB is the way to go. Dude.
