Snapshot:
All-new, the 2004 Mazda3 replaces the Protegé. It's a world-class compact with European features and handling, front-wheel-drive, two body types. Sporty styling and performance distinguish the 2004 Mazda3, especially in the hatch configuration. Prices start at $13,680 in the US, $16,195 in Canada. Basic warranty is 3 yrs./50,000 mi.
Should You Buy a 2004 Mazda3?:
Replacing the long-running Protegé, the all-new 2004 Mazda3 has been designed to compete in markets around the world. Which means it gets the kind of style, handling, and performance that lucky Europeans are accustomed to and we North Americans are often denied. Buyers have a choice of 4-door sedans or hatchbacks but as always, we recommend the hatch configuration for its cargo capacity and convenience although it is priced higher than the sedan. The 2-liter engine comes with 148 hp, or 160 hp in upgraded sports models. A fully-independent suspension system tuned to feel like a rear-drive car promises lots of fun on twisting roads; 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS assure safe and quick stopping. Larger and roomier than the Protegé, the 2004 Mazda3 has plenty of storage compartments. Options include leather, stability control, and a navigation system. We haven't driven it yet but on paper this handsome new 2004 Mazda3 looks like a world-beater.
