Snapshot:
Completely new from bumper-to-bumper, features styling drawn from the too-far-out 7-Series and the sporty 3-Series. Still the ultimate "businessman's executive express" as BMW claims, borrowing a phrase from a long ago British Bristol 2-door sedan. This has always been the car for those who like to drive hard between appointments.
How Much?:
Price for a 2004 BMW 5 Series in the US ranges from $39,995 to $54,995.
The Inside Story:
A heads-up display provides primary information; a distance-based radar cruise control can keep you out of trouble. The AC now has adaptive evaporation control to assure only pure air seeps inside. The i-Drive minor control system is still there but was tamed after critics said "intuitive to what?" Passengers will be snugly held in firm but well-contoured seats.
Under the Hood:
Few have ever complained that a BMW was short on power. The base 525i offers 184 hp from that lovely inline 6, the 539i ups that to 225 hp which, in our opinion, is more than enough. Those who seek max power can opt for a 325 hp V-8.
Transmissions:
Simple, thank goodness: All 5-Series cars get a 6-speed manual, with a 6-speed automatic as a no-cost option; the latter highly recommended if you're frequently calling home office on the cell.
Warranty:
4 years/50,000 miles bumper-to-bumper. 4 years/50,000 miles powertrain.
Should You Buy a 2004 BMW 5 Series?:
That's a rhetorical question for anyone who loves cars. If you need a comfortable sedan, if you love to drive hard and fast, buy it. If you're desparate to make an impression when driving up to the Beverly Hilton, what the heck, buy it anyway and let the parking attendant have all the fun. Seriously folks, the BMW 5-Series has always been the car to own when the driving experience must be balanced with family life. We do have reservations about the rear-end styling, as we do with the 7-Series.
