2004 Hyundai Accent GT
"If you can find better transportation value with four wheels and a roof, buy it." That's how Robert Bowden concludes his test of the 2004 Accent GT.

2004 Jaguar S Type R
The "R" in 2004 Jaguar S-Type R stands for high performance. We also compare the new sedan with the car that inspired it... a 61 Jaguar 3.8 sedan we once owned.

2004 Jaguar XJR
Everyone knows Jaguars are comfortable and convey elegance to those inside them, but few probably think of these luxury chariots as being in the same league with the BMW M5 or Mercedes-Benz E55. Think again, as this 4-door sedan combines a 390-horsepower V-8 with a six-speed automatic transmission to match performance numbers with those competitors, and at less cost.

2004 Lexus IS 300
As a driving machine the Lexus IS 300 is a match for any compact 4-door sports sedan. Superb engine, fine handling, impeccable build quality distinguish this car.

2004 Lexus LS 430
There are so many computer-controlled systems in the LS 430 that Lexus should take advantage of the navigation screen and DVD player to produce an in-car see-it-and-try-it instruction disk. Aside from that, driving the Lexus LS 430 was better than a free ride on Aladdin's magic carpet.

2004 Nissan 300Z Roadster
Open the top, let a little sunshine in, and the Nissan 300Z becomes a fabulous convertible sports car.

2004 Pontiac Grand Prix
Pontiac's sporty Grand Prix, a family sedan with sporty edges, is newly designed for 2004. We tested the performance GTP model.

2004 Porsche Boxster
With its engine set behind the driver and ahead of the rear wheels, the 2004 Porsche Boxster is perfectly balanced. The water-cooled 6-cylinder unit is laid flat in classic boxster configuration, hence the name. Top disappears when down. A pure sports car for much less money than a Porsche 911.

2004 Porsche Cayenne Turbo
The 2004 Porsche Cayenne Turbo is a luxurious SUV, built in the Porsche tradition of high performance. It is available in a naturally-aspirated V-8 version, and as a powerful Turbo V-8. All-wheel-drive is standard.

2004 Subaru Forester 2.5XT
For its compact all-wheel-drive Forester, Subaru designed a sport-ute body to drop over the chassis used by its wagons. Stylish, it is not. But over the years, it has become the quickest of the compact sport-utes and today it can put all competitors and most cars in its rear-view mirror.

2004 Subaru WRX Sti
This has got to be the performance bargain of all time, and that includes those muscle cars from the last century. It took a few years for eager North Americans to push Subaru into bringing the rally-winning car here, but the Sti was well worth the wait.

2004 Suzuki Aerio
The Suzuki Aerio, a spacious "tall car," comes in both sedan and hatchback bodystyles.

2004 Suzuki Swift+
Virtually identical to the Chevrolet Aveo, the Suzuki Swift+ is an entry-level hatchback full of pleasant surprises.

2004 Toyota Camry SE V-6
Aside from a legendary reputation for quality, the Camry delivers everything the average North American demands of a car. And with the SE V-6, a little more.

2004 Toyota Camry Solara
It was always easy to ignore the Solara, simply because it was invisible and not much fun to drive. All that has changed with the 2004 Camry Solara. Now the Camry coupe gets admiring glances. Now it has an admirable interior. Now it can be driven on a winding road in true sporting fashion.

2004 Toyota Prius
The Toyota Prius is much-improved in its second incarnation as a hybrid sedan, powered by both an electric motor and a gasoline engine. Its only competitor to date is the Honda Insight, which can't approach the Prius in terms of practicality.

2004 Volkswagen Passat W8
The W8 is the top of the line Volkswagen Passat. Fully equipped (including an 8-cylinder engine), it costs a bunch more than other Passats. But it might well be worth it. Best don’t think of the W8 as a megabuck Volkswagen, though; think of it rather as a bargain-priced, prestige sedan from Germany. You’ll get Audi A6 performance and luxury and you’ll leave 10 large in your wallet.

2004 Volvo S60 R
The letter "R" is the secret ingredient in the 2004 Volvo S60 R. It stands for "integrated performance," melding power, handling and refinement into one slick package.

2004 Subaru Impreza

2004 Suzuki Aerio

2004 Toyota Corolla

2004 Toyota Echo

2004 Volkswagen Golf

2004 Volkswagen Jetta

2004 Chevrolet Aveo
