Snapshot:

Volvo has garnered quite a reputation for adding sporty handling and performance to its front-drive mid-size sedan. Four engines are available, including one for the all-wheel-drive R model. Coupe-style design is attractive, less practical. Top-rated for safety.

How Much?:

Price for a 2004 Volvo S60 in the US ranges from $26,960 to $36,825.

The Inside Story:

Seats four comfortably, five in a pinch. The rear is somewhat tight and difficult to access because of the styling. Front seats are very comfortable. Amenities include dual-zone climate control, cruise, tilt/telescope steering wheel, premium sound, wide range of power assists.

Under the Hood:

Base engine's a 2.4 liter inline-5 with 168 hp, 166 lb.-ft. torque; 2.5T produces 208 hp; 2.3 turbo-5 gives 247 hp; S60R gets a 2.5T with 300 hp. Mileage (EPA) city/highway for the base model is 22/31 mpg.

Transmissions:

All models except R offer a choice of 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic; the R includes a 6-speed manual or 5-speed auto. Traction control and dynamic stability control are standard on all S60's.

Warranty:

4 years/50,000 miles bumper-to-bumper. 4 years/50,000 miles powertrain.

Should You Buy a 2004 Volvo S60?:

Volvo continues to move its products into the sporty performance class, in particular the S60, which competes with standard-bearers like the BMW 3-Series and Acura TL. The platform is a strong one, the body is handsome, the range of powerplants impressive, though a bit confusing if you're trying to make a choice. You'll get the vaunted Volvo safety features and with dynamic stability control, front-wheel-drive is not a detriment to handling. But watch out if you'll be carrying elderly or tall passengers in the rear; access is awkward, visibility poor.
