Like it, hate it, like it, hate it

The Chevy HHR is one of those vehicles that have me on the fence, and I’m still not sure to which side I’m going to fall. I know GM says it’s completely different from the Chrysler PT Cruiser, but when people are asking me if it’s the new PT, well, you can see the dilemma here. And although Aaron, our Site Guide, says he's seen tons of ’em on the street, I’ve only seen one other.

I like the head room, even for tall guys, and I like the cargo area. But I absolutely hate the window switches down low in the center console. I can’t reach them without stretching, and it completely takes my eyes off the road. The ergonomics engineer must have the arm length of an orangutan to make that work. I hate the giant head restraints, only for the fact that they fill the window when I turn to look before changing lanes. And I hate the fact that there’s no PRNDL indicator up high where I can see it. I also am a bit displeased that it bases so reasonably at $15,990, but equipped with what you really want, it jumps to over $22,000.

I like the steering feel; it’s linear, effortless, and feels good on center; I also like the ride quality. It was a lot better damped than I thought it would be. I would have liked to try the bigger 2.4-liter 172-horsepower engine, but I didn’t get a chance: mine was the 2.2 of 143 hp that felt a bit anemic on launch, and that was with just one person inside.

I guess the bottom line is if you can live with the not-so-ergonomically designed interior, it’s not a bad vehicle. I just know that every time I reached for the window switches, I was cursing the interior designer, and for me, it’s those little details that would stop me from purchasing an otherwise decent product. -- BJ Killeen
