In 1970, Ford began importing the German-built Ford Capri -- introduced in Europe a year earlier -- and selling it in the US at Lincoln-Mercury dealerships. Its tiny 1.6 liter engine was quickly replaced in '71 by the 2.0 liter Pinto engine. A small V6 followed in 1972, and a restyled hatchback Capri bowed in 1975. 1978 -- the version shown here -- was the last year for the European-designed Capri; the new-for-'79 Capri was actually a rebadged Mustang. From 1991 to 1994, Mercury applied the name to a front-wheel-drive two-seat convertible designed by Ford's Australian division.
