Saturn freshened its face for 2005. A friend, along for the ride, didn't recognise it and suggested the Ion resembles a Japanese car. It wasn't a compliment, for the Saturn has lost much of its original character. He didn't realise, of course, that European genes exist in the platform and 2.2 liter Ecotec engine. By compact standards the Ion is large outside, a tight squeeze inside. Ding-and-dent resistant panels are a plus. Priced from $11,995 to $17,370; warranty 3 yrs, 36,000 mi. Check
