Those European genes showed up on the road, where it counts most. Although the Saturn Ion uses a torsion-beam rear suspension instead of independent suspension all-round, it corners flat and securely. The electric-assisted steering is delightfully precise though somewhat devoid of road feel and the 140 hp 2.2 liter Ecotec four offers a healthy 145 lb./ft. of torque.

Our test Ion was fitted with a 4-speed automatic transmission and while I generally find today's automatics a match for manuals in most respects, this car would have worked better with the standard 5-speed. Some of the fun emanating from that pleasurable handling was lost with the lack of a fifth gear, while the small quadrant was difficult to use precisely without glancing down.

Perhaps the Ion's roadholding was gained in part by stiffening the suspension, for the test car rode firmly and failed to disguise even smaller bumps. I don't count that last as a negative since a firm, controlled ride is always preferable to a soft, cushiony float. Wind noise is minimal, engine sounds are muted, making for a pleasant highway trip on the journey back from Vancouver to my island home of Sidney. Only the seats marred the experience. Try before you buy.
