Jeep Liberty diesel: Sips fuel like a 4-cylinder, but pulls like a V6

Jeep is dipping its toe into the diesel-powered-SUV water with the Liberty. The Liberty turbodiesel boasts an EPA fuel economy rating of 21 MPG city/27 MPG highway, and that's with an automatic transmission and four-wheel-drive. In real-life driving that's a 15-20 percent increase in mileage over the six-cylinder gasoline-powered version, with no drop in towing capacity. The diesel even does a shade better than the underpowered four-cylinder Liberty with a stick-shift and two-wheel-drive. There's a reason big trucks have been using diesel power for decades: diesel engines are efficient and durable. Why shouldn't a small truck have the same advantages?
