Toyota Prius: Family-sedan practicality with hybrid frugality

Of all the fuel-saving solutions, hybrid cars are still the most practical and obtainable. Hyrbids work by capturing energy that would otherwise be wasted. When you slow down your car, the brakes convert motion energy to heat energy. Hybrids capture that energy by converting it to electricity, which can be stored; with all this "free" power, the hybrid can make do with a smaller engine. The Prius' sophisticated electronics mix gasoline and electric power, running the car on either or both, and its operation is totally seamless. Best yet, the Prius offers up the same space and acceleration as a four-cylinder Camry. The Prius does its best fuel-saving magic in slow urban traffic, where it can run on pure battery power. For fuel savings on longer trips, consider the two-seat Honda Insight, which is designed to squeeze the most mileage out of a gallon of gas at highway speeds.
