EOS: Volkswagen's new convertible (photos: top up, top down) uses a retractable steel-and-glass hard top that also doubles as a super-size sunroof. It shares its A-platform architecture with the Rabbit and Jetta, and offers a choice of 200 hp turbocharged 4-cylinder or 250 hp V6 power. Pricing starts under $29,000.

GTI:A four-door hatchback joins the three-door. Ride height is lowered by about an inch for a sportier appearance.

JETTA: A new base model is priced $1,410 cheaper than the least-expensive 2006 Jetta. Officially, the diesel-powered TDI is discontinued. Unofficially, VW will continue to sell a "special edition" 2007 Jetta TDI badged as a 2006 model. The GLI gets new wheels and a lowered suspension. A new turbodiesel engine is expected in 2008, and a Jetta wagon is rumored for an introduction some time in 2007.

NEW BEETLE: The diesel is discontinued; a new diesel engine will make its debut in 2008.

PASSAT: Now available as a wagon (photo). As with the sedan, the Passat Wagon is available with a 2.0 liter turbo 4-cylinder or 3.6 liter V6, the latter with optional 4Motion all-wheel-drive.

PHAETON: Discontinued.

RABBIT: (photo) The fifth-generation Golf returned late in 2006 model year bearing the Rabbit nameplate in the US and Canada. Early Rabbits were badged as 2006 models; no major change to the 2007 Rabbit aside from some new paint colors.
