Not All Efficient Cars are New

Fuel efficiency may be all the rage these days, but even back in the day you didn't have to drive a V8 that burned an entire dinosaur per day. My '60 Porsche 356 can give me mileage in the high 30s if I drive it right. So much for California's crush-it laws ... jerks.

Ford Fusion Hybrid

I agree with Aaron on his choice of the Focus Hybrid as the best of the hybrid models. It offers a great sedan combined with strong fuel economy numbers. Plus, it's enjoyable to drive - an added bonus.

My 2004 Jaguar XJ8

The one thing that surprises most people when I describe what I like about my XJ8 is that I have a luxury car with speed (V8 engine) and style that is very fuel efficient for its size; seats 5 adults comfortably. Most don't believe me when I tell them I get 26.5 average mpg city/highway, and I have to bring up the cars digital display as proof. The XJ8 has so many creature comforts like burled wood, front and back heated leather seats and steering wheel, dual climate controls, automatic lights and wipers…and the list goes on. It’s great to drive and I feel safe when traveling with my granddaughter. 2004 was the first year of Jaguar’s aluminum unibody construction consisting of more than 300 aluminum components bonded, riveted, and welded to produce a whole greater than the sum of its parts making it 40% stiffer and 60% lighter than the steel structure it replaced. Best of all, you can get a nice low mileage Jaguar XJ for $20K or under.

VW Jetta TDI FTW

I found the VW Jetta TDI SportWagen to be incredibly useful. In one week, I took my family to the coast a couple hours away, attended a meeting in Seattle -- a three-hour round trip -- and commuted around town in traffic-y side streets. At the end of that week, I was still averaging 37 mpg, without any effort to green up my driving. It was comfortable, easy to drive, fun, and didn't stink like you might think a diesel would. Bonus: the nav system had a setting for displaying nearby diesel stations on the map. Handy.
