Cool site: Car shopping in the past
Friday August 12, 2005
For me, the way new cars are marketed is nearly as interesting as the cars themselves. (After all, if cars hadn't become such an integral part of our identity, we'd all be driving Ladas.) I found a site called The Old Car Manual Project that features scans of brochures, owners manuals, and all sorts of other gems. If you think today's copy writers lay it on thick, how about the 1935 Auburn ("Enjoy that complete assurance that comes when you know you are driving the King of the Highway"), or the 1980 Chevrolet Citation ("The first Chevy of the 80s"), or even the 1963 Dutch-market Ford Galaxy ("De letters XL betekenen hier "Extra Luxeus"... en hoe!") A nifty site and it's all free. For more great photos and history, don't forget to check out About Classic Cars, run by our own road tester and Guide Emeritus Philip Powell. -- Aaron Gold
