Testing tires: Michelin's Primacy MXV4
This past week, Michelin brought myself and a bunch of other journalists out to Birmingham, Alabama to try out their new Primacy MXV4 passenger car tire.
Michelin had two cars for us to test, one with the new Primacy MXV4 and one with its closest competitor. With dozens and dozens of different tires on the market, comparing the new Michelin to just one other tire is hardly what I'd call a conclusive test. But it did plainly illustrate that not all tires are created equal. There was a notable difference in handling and braking between the Michelin and the competing tire, and the event yielded some valuable lessons about what to consider when purchasing tires. Had Turanzas on my Solara SE and got 35,000 mi until too worn to re-install. Coincidentally, I just chose a set of Primacy MXV4’s for the same vehicle and there is a huge improvement in every day ride. It is a very quiet tire and gripped very well in our latest round of thunderstorm activity on bad roads. Don’t think it is the stiffest tire on hard cornering though, but cruises very well for most of us ordinary drivers. There seems to be some confusion with old Mich. names amongst those who think they are discussing this brand new tire.
